HELP KEEP A VOLUNTEER WARM THIS WINTER
CAPITAL DISTRICT - The USS SLATER has launched their 15th Annual Winter Fund Drive. It’s time to “help keep a volunteer warm this winter.” According to Chairman Bartley “BJ” Costel-lo, “The Winter Fund Drive was conceived back in 1998. After the first season of public visitation, we realized that we did not have enough cash to get us through the winter. When we closed for the season, our income stream ceased, but our expenses continued. It was a case of making lemonade out of lemons. We reached out to our members and asked them each to donate $100 to help get us through the winter. The response was overwhelming. Their donations got us through that first winter and then some. We’ve continued the drive every year since.” The appeal enables the volunteers to keep working on USS SLATER’s restoration throughout the winter months. It has become an important part of the Museum’s operating fund. USS SLATER is supported by a network of 3,000 members in all 50 states, including Navy veterans, their families, and history-minded friends. In 2013 the only pub-lic funding the Museum received was a $1000 City of Albany Arts Grant to support public programming. Private donations provide half of the Museum’s operating budget. The efforts of the SLATER’s volunteers were rewarded in 2012 when the ship was designated a National Historic Landmark and in 2013 the Museum received a New York State preservation award. Volunteers donate an average of 16,000 hours a year to the project. Winter Fund donors are welcome at any level. Visit the website at www.ussslater.org for more information. Museum memberships begin at $25. Members receive the Museum’s quarterly newsletter “Trim But Deadly,” which fea-tures historic articles, photos and updates on the volunteer’s progress, as well as free admission to the ship. Donations may be mailed to USS SLATER, P.O. Box 1926, Albany, NY 12201.

CAR BATTERY CARE IN EXTREME WEATHER Few things can be more frustrating than jumping into the driver’s seat on a frosty morning, turning the key in the ignition and failing to hear the engine roar to life. Frigid weather can cause trouble with a car’s battery. Some drivers do not understand why, but getting the facts can help people avoid having to deal with dead batteries on cold winter days.
Cold temperatures wreak havoc on batteries because they slow the chemical reaction inside of the battery. Batteries work by combining lead plates with lead dioxide and sulfuric acid to create electrons. While batteries can function under myriad conditions, the cold weather tends to degrade high-quality batteries and may render subpar batteries useless. The cold weather can cause the fl uid in the battery to freeze and lose function. A battery that is frozen will not hold a charge, and, as a result, the car won’t start.
There are various ways to protect a battery from failure in the cold, and some of them involve taking precautionary measures even before the arrival of cold weather.
* Assess the age of your battery. If your battery is old, now may be the time to replace it. Batteries diff er in how long they last, but many last anywhere from fi ve to 10 years. If your car is still running on its original battery and your card is several years old, it may be a good idea to get a new battery before the arrival of winter. Battery size will not necessarily provide better starting. It’s important to buy the correct battery for the make of your car, which can usually be found inside of the owner’s manual.
* Verify that there is no corrosion. Corrosion can prevent a car from starting just as much as a worn-out battery. Corrosion is caused by a faulty connection that allows battery acid to escape and corrode surrounding areas. Regularly inspect the battery to keep abreast of issues that may cause corrosion. Carefully clean away any corrosive residue that has formed and make sure the battery is correctly seated.
* Install a battery blanket. A battery blanket is used to wrap around the battery and fi t inside of the battery cover. A cord with a plug runs from the blanket to a wall outlet. The blanket can produce enough heat to keep the battery fl uid from freezing. A trickle charger can also be mounted on the battery. It will deliver enough power to the battery while the car is off to keep it from freezing.
* Minimize the use of automotive accessories. Do not start the car with the heater and the radio on. They can use up the power coming from the car’s alternator and prevent the battery from charging. Do not leave the heat and the radio on while the car is idling. Otherwise the car will not be putting out enough power for the alternator to charge the battery and power the electrical systems.
* Disconnect the battery. If your car will be stored in a garage for the winter, disconnect the battery. Certain devices, such as clocks and alarm systems, continue to drain battery power when the vehicle is off . If your car will not be driven enough to recharge the battery, keep it disconnected when the automobile is being stored.
Cold weather can sometimes wreak havoc on vehicles. Knowing how to skirt trouble with your car’s battery can keep your car on the road throughout the winter.
Drivers should replace old car batteries before the arrival of winter weather.
LONGEST ROADS IN NORTH AMERICA Road trips are popular all year long, and driving the same roads during various seasons can yield entirely diff erent views along the way. Many scenic highways can take travelers across the country, and for those drivers interested in traveling the longest roads in North America, there are two options at the ready.
At 4,990 miles (8,030 kilometers), the Trans-Canada Highway is the longest roadway in North America. It is a federal-provincial highway system that travels through all 10 provinces of Canada between the Atlantic and Pacifi c Oceans. A person can travel all the way from New-foundland to British Columbia on the highway. The system was approved in 1949 and the highway offi cially opened in 1962. Drivers on the highway will easily recognize the green-and-white maple leaf route markers.
Drivers south of the Canadian border can travel along U.S. Route 20. Spanning 3,365 miles (5,415 kilometers), Route 20 is an east-west highway and the longest road in the United States. In the east, Route 20 terminates in Boston, Mass. In the west, it ends at Newport, Ore. The “0” in the route’s number indicates it is a coast-to-coast route. Route 20 travels through Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts.
Although the length of U.S. Route 6 was shortened when California renumbered its highways in 1964 and a portion of the route was transferred to another highway, the road is the longest continuous roadway in the United States. It is not considered a major transcontinental route because Route 6 was gradually put together from other routes over time. But it still can get drivers from Massachusetts to California.

SELF-DRIVING CARS COULD BE THE FUTURE OF TRAVEL
The electronics and computer-driven features of modern automobiles continue to evolve at a rapid pace. Until now, however, most of these features have been manually em-ployed. But the self-driving car, once a concept reserved only for science fi ction, may make driving even more passive in the near future, with some slated to hit showrooms as early as 2017.
Google, as a pioneer of some of the more advanced self-driv-ing automobile technologies, says that computer-navigated cars are safer than manually operated automobiles. But will the public embrace such vehicles? Autonomous cars are al-ready being operated in California, Nevada, Florida and cer-tain areas within the United Kingdom. At the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Toyota and Audi unveiled their prototypes to sell to regular car buyers, while Ford and Mercedes-Benz are working on their own self-driving tech-nology.
Legislation within the United States has already paved the way for autonomous cars to be tested on private roads. Once these cars are made available to the public, legislators will begin the task of revising driving laws and may need to re-consider how drivers earn their licenses.
Although the technology diff ers depending on the manu-facturer, in the Google autonomous vehicle, a number of components are working in concert to enable the vehicle to move safely. At the heart of the system is a laser range fi nder mounted on the roof of the car. This laser generates a detailed 3D map of the environment. The car then combines these laser measurements with established high-resolution maps of the world. The vehicle also employs other sensors in its technology. Radars mounted on the front and rear bumpers enable the car to detect its surroundings. Cameras detect traffi c lights, while GPS and inertial measurement units will help to keep track of the vehicle’s location and various movements. Data is also programmed into the car so it can diff erentiate stationary objects like poles and mail-boxes from factors in the environment, such as pedestrians or construction. The Google vehicles also are programmed to follow road rules and make assessments of changing situ-ations, such as advancing at a four-way-stop if other drivers have not yet moved into the intersection.
The goal of self-driving car manufacturers is to reduce congestion and accidents and keep traffi c fl owing more smoothly. Automakers will continue to conduct research to see how well self-driving cars and the people inside them work together.

I am a pretty, snowy white, lovely quiet girl. I like to go for walks and explore and then settle for a good snuggle with my favorite person-could that be you?
Tally is a sweet, but shy shepherd mix. Once you gain her trust, she loves to go on long walks (even in the snow) and sit by you as you pet her and tell her how
pretty she is. If you are lucky, she will roll on her back and wait for belly rubs! She really is a great dog with her beautiful tail and that “one ear up, one ear down”
look! Come meet her at MHHS.

BYWAY SUMMITCLIFTON PARK - The Mohawk Towpath Byway and its mu-nicipal partners are planning a Byway Summit on March 20, 2014, at the Century House in Latham. The purpose of the summit will be to accept an action plan for scenic conserva-tion and corridor enhancement, to optimize economic devel-opment, heritage and eco-tourism and the local quality of life in this portion of the Mohawk Valley. Municipalities will be asked to identify and evaluate projects and initiatives. The Mohawk Towpath Byway was established in 2003 by New York State. It follows the route of the historic Erie Canal be-tween Cohoes, Waterford and Schenectady. As one travels the Byway they discover the story of the waterway west, the Erie Canal and the role our communities played in the west-ward expansion of the country and the Industrial Revolution. It became one of America’s Byways© in 2005. Congressman Paul Tonko is the invited keynote speaker for the event. The Mohawk Towpath Scenic Byway Coalition is the not-for-profit corporation consisting of the eight municipalities through which the Byway passes over local, county, state and federal highway segments within Clifton Park, Colonie, Cohoes, Half-moon, Niskayuna, Schenectady and Waterford.

RECENTLY RETIRED AND LOOKING FOR MEANINGFUL VOLUNTEER WORK?
SARATOGA REGION - I am I can is a 501(c)3 organization that was created to mentor girls in grades 9 - 12. Programs provide needed encouragement, guidance and advocacy to stu-dents as they navigate their high school years and move toward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female mentors to work with students on a weekly basis. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while developing a relationship that provides support and guidance. If you are a recently retired woman looking for some mean-ingful volunteer work, this may be for you. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. You will help the student to develop core values and “encourage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in endless possibilities while empowering them to make it happen”. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Hudson Falls, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your community, please contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 518-688-3010 ext 102, or email [email protected].
COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIESCLIFTON PARK – Are you a high school student in need of community service? Are you look-ing for volunteer opportunities? If so, the Shenendehowa Adult Community Center, 6 Clifton Common Court in Clifton Park, is always looking for volunteers to assist with everything from basic cleaning to event organization to clerical work. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the Center at 383-1343.

FREE CHAIR YOGA CLASS
CLIFTON PARK - The Shenen-dehowa Adult Community Center, 6 Clifton Common Court, Clifton Park, and in-structor Bonnie Furlong, RN, and certified Yoga instructor is offering a free chair yoga class on April 7, at 10 am, at the Center. Harvard Health now recommends yoga as an alternative therapy proven to promote better health and relieve stress and ‘the blues’. This is a modified Yoga class suitable for those wishing a very gentle but ef-fective practice. It is particu-larly helpful for individuals who have orthopedic, bal-ance or other health issues that would make a tradi-tional yoga class unsuitable. Most of the class is done seated in chair, nothing down on the floor. For more information about our Chair Yoga classes, please contact the Center at 383-1343.
