Oakley Needs A Forever Home

Oakley is a neutered male Yellow Lab mix, approx. 4 years old. Weighing in at about 85 lbs. he’s like a Hoss Cartwright of dogs; big and lov-able. Despite being

great with humans, we think he should be the only dog in the household. He’d also be best in a home with just adults or in a home with older children since he is a powerful dog. Oakley is looking for someone wonderful to give him a forever home.

For further information on adopting Oakley, please call Capital District Humane Association

The Case For Choosing Native Plants One of the best ways to improve a home’s resale value is to ad-dress the landscape. Increasing a property’s curb appeal can be done in many ways, but a well-pruned lawn and garden gives buyers the impression that the sellers truly took the time to maintain the home and the surrounding property.Unfortunately, many homeowners choose exotic plants when addressing their landscape. Though these plants can be appealing and make a property stand out, if the plants are not native to the region, they could be doing more harm than good. Instead of upgrading your property with exotic plants from a far away land, consider the following benefits of choosing native plants before addressing your landscape.* Native plants benefit local wildlife. The native plants and the native wildlife spent years and years evolving together, with each doing their part to ensure the other’s survival. But as devel-opment continued, local wildlife suffered because of lost food sources. The local wildlife needs local, native plants to survive, so choosing these plants instead of exotic plants can help ensure the survival of wildlife that helps keep the ecosystem in check.* Native plants require less work. Some prospective home buyers might find a yard filled with exotic plants to be visually stunning, but they might also see a good deal of work to maintain those plants. Many exotic plants require significant work on a homeowner’s part to survive, while native plants have already adapted to the local climate and will require much less care. This is often attractive to current and future homeowners alike.

* Native plants might be a better investment. A native plant has evolved over the years to sur-vive in its given area. Local insect populations and fungal infections might be able to destroy an exotic plant, but a native plant has grown resistant to such problems and likely has the ability to fight such infestations or infections on its own. An exotic plant might require costly pesticides and considerable attention from homeowners to survive such problems.

Though homeowners might find exotic plants help their home stand out from their neighbors’, it’s important that homeowners recognize the environmental benefits of choosing local plants before making any decisions.

Top Tips To Make A Home Green (MS) -- A well-planned, high performance home costs less to operate -- and as importantly, high performance is the promise of premium resale value.

Sustainable components include energy-efficient heating, lighting, cooling and water systems, as well as the reduction of natural resources like wood. Clip this checklist as a preliminary guide for both you and your builder:Location: Build for lifestyle convenience where you can walk, cycle, or take public transit.Position: Consider north-south positioning to maximize use of the sun’s energy and heat.Generate: Install solar panels and generator to offset public energy supply. Add a solar water heater.Walls: Build with concrete. An award-winning wall system, advanced by Nudura, builds with pre-assembled forms, each one stacked, reinforced, and then filled with concrete. Once locked together (like Lego) the system creates a solid, monolithic concrete wall. This method (www.nudura.com) has shown to deliver energy savings of up to 70 percent and delivers a building envelope up to three times more sound resistant, four times more fire resistant, and nine times stronger.Materials: Premium green choices should include low- and zero-VOC (volatile organic com-pound) paints and sealants, plus high-performance windows, roofing and flooring.

Landscaping: Design your gardens for low use of water and pesticides. Plan with drought-resis-tant native plants, perennial groundcovers, plus flowers and shady canopy trees.

Planning Your Renovation Smartly (MS) -- As you tear apart the wallpaper, replace the cupboards and strip the floorboards, experts caution not to reach for that bucket of paint before investigating the innards of your walls.Insulation and infrastructure are significant to the foundation and value of your property, so bringing in a home inspector or appraiser allows you to make corrections early, before you’ve finalized the renovation plans.Common problems centre on air leakage and poor insulation issues, experts tell us. The latest research, for example, indicates that traditional fibreglass and cellulose insulation are less reli-able than contemporary spray foam insulation.Foams, like those from Icynene, are known to decrease the presence of common airborne irri-tants, reduce air and water penetration and reduce energy costs. When you sell your home, spray foam insulation stands to give a better return on investment than dated insulation.

Plywood And Mdf: What’s The Difference? For decades plywood was the go-to inexpensive wood of choice for many home-repair projects. In fact, it was actually the first manufactured wood product available. Then the term MDF, or medium-density fiberboard, started making its way onto home-improvement shows and among do-it-yourselfers, making it a popular material in recent years. Still, many people do not know the differences between these types of wood products.

Plywood is constructed by gluing several layers of thin wood veneers between two pieces of wood to create a solid sheet. Experts say there is an odd number of veneer layers, and each one is attached at a right angle to the one below to add strength to the plywood. There may be knots or irregularities in the plywood because it is made of actual slices of wood. It comes in a variety of strengths, depending on the thickness of the plywood. Thickness can vary by sheet depending on the manufacturer, so each sheet may not be consistent.

MDF is formed with wood fibers or shavings mixed with glue or resin. Under heat or pressure, the MDF is made into a solid material. Because MDF is not made from slices of wood to form veneers, it will not have the traditional graining or knots associated with wood. This can be an advantage or disadvantage depending on how it is ultimately used. MDF is often easy to cut, drill and manipulate because users will not have to work around grain or knots. But users should be careful to drill pilot holes before attaching MDF be-cause it can split. Due to ma-chine creation, MDF is gen-erally uniform in thickness, which makes it consistent for many uses. It is important to note that sanding and cutting of MDF can cause the release of formaldehyde. Safety gog-gles and a mask are a must when using this product.

Plywood is more readily used for walls, ceilings and sub-floors because of its strength. MDF is widely relied on for building cabinets, crafts, shelving and trimwork.

Did You Know? Potatoes are enjoyed world-over and make a versatile addition to any meal. Though many con-sumers purchase their potatoes at the local grocery store, potatoes can be easily grown in the home garden, too. Potatoes prefer a slightly acidic soil and full sun and will produce best in a loose, moisture-retentive soil. It is possible to get good potato yields in less-than-perfect soil, however. Home gardeners can begin planting potatoes in early spring, when the soil is able to be worked. Plants will not begin to grow until the soil temperature is at least 45 F. Plant only certi-fied seed potatoes, which are available at most quality nurseries and garden centers. They are less likely to have disease than a potato you picked up at the supermarket and tried to establish. Small seed potatoes can be planted as-is. Larger seed potatoes should be cut into pieces that contain at least one or two “eyes.” Placing the seed potatoes in a warm location can entice them to bud and speed up the sprouting process once planted.

How To Choose A Builder (MS) -- Whether the kids have all grown up and moved out or if the kids are on the way and it’s time to expand a living area, building a new home is an exciting, yet often agonizing, experi-ence. The reasons for building a new home are many, but regardless of the reason, the process of choosing a builder should remain the same.Andrew Nadalin, president of Pace 2000 Inc. and a fourth generation builder and craftsmen, offers the following advice to prospective home-owners with their eyes set on building a dream home to call their own.* Look for a builder with a solid reputation. A builder’s reputation speaks volumes, but it doesn’t have to speak for istself. That’s because a builder who has spent years providing personal service, innovative design and quality workmanship will no doubt have a host of happy former custom-ers ready and willing to offer their input. If during the interview process a builder appears reticent to share his work or experiences with previous customers, this should be a red flag. Reputable builders will be proud of their work and more than willing to show it off.

* Find a builder who is flexible. You will be paying to build your home, not the builder’s home. A builder should be flexible and ready and willing to meet your needs, no matter how unique they might be.* Look for a builder who does more than build. A good builder should do more than just build. A builder should provide a network of qualified professionals to make the process go more smoothly. This network should include real estate and building consultants, interior designers, architects and engineers. Such connections can provide peace of mind and will also illustrate that a builder is both respected in the community and is intent on ensuring your home becomes the dream home you envision it to be.* Don’t build on the cheap. Buyers who plan to build their own home are in the unique position to ensure their home is as safe and high-quality as possible. This isn’t always the case when buying a resale, so make the most of your op-portunity and use only top-of-the-line construction materi-als and features and choose a builder with experience in working with such materials and features. Building on the cheap could prove disastrous in the not too distant future, so don’t sacrifice on quality when building a new home.

Save Money On Energy Bills (MS) -- Home is where the heart is, where families grow, and generally where the most of our leisure time is spent. Working with green technology for the best insulation will keep your house warm, welcoming, comfortable and cozy -- and will save you money, all at the same time. Insulation advancements are on the horizon at all times, experts say. Take a look at innovation by Icynene, for example. Their soft, expanding spray foam insulation and air barrier material protects homeowners from the harmful outdoor environment and from energy-robbing air leak-age. Icynene pioneered the spray foam technology and now leads in industry training. Why are homeowners turning to spray foam insulation? Experts tell us that older insulation types, such as fibreglass, will settle, compact and sag over time, decreasing their insulation properties. Spray foam insulation is energy efficient, says Icynene, and it has a high R-value due to its ability to seal and insulate at the same time. The spray foam solutions are created with water blowing agents and renewable and recycled content, which help reduce greenhouse gas emissions to support a healthier environment. Spray foam insulation can be used in new home construction or additions and insulation upgrades to existing homes (attics, crawlspaces) during remodeling projects. With spray foam insulation you can maintain healthy indoor air while reducing your HVAC equipment needs and saving on energy bills. In addition, homeowners can conserve construction materials without the need for excess sealing and still achieve optimal airtightness. Spray foam insulation doesn’t pass off gas over time, performs at peak levels for the lifetime of your home, and, because airborne moisture is controlled, the durability of the building remains unthreatened by the growth of mold and mildew.

Fun Facts About EarthwormsThere are more than 2,700 different types of earthworms residing on the planet. Earthworms are often known to be workhorses in the garden, helping to aerate and fertilize the soil while filling it with nutrients. Earthworms recycle materials like dead leaves, decaying animals and feces so new plant seedlings can grow and have the process begin anew. Worms have been around for 120 million years -- one of the few species of insects that have stood the test of time. In just one acre of soil, there may be a million or more earthworms turning over the soil and chewing on organic matter. Without earthworms, most plants would not thrive. Earthworms have mucous covering their bodies in order to stay moist. This helps them to breathe through their skin. You may have noticed that after it rains worms appear on sidewalks and outside of their underground burrows. This is not because they are drowning underground, but because the environment is moist after it rains, making it more conducive for worms to breathe and move around to find mates. Normally the dry conditions above ground make them dry out and die. Earthworms can be remarkable creatures to watch. Contrary to popular belief, worms do have a mouth and an opposite end for waste removal that is not interchangeable.

Ergonomic Tools Make Gardening Easier Hand injuries are a common side effect of certain occupations and hobbies. Tennis elbow or wrist and even carpal tunnel syndrome are well-recognized injuries. But ergonomic tools can help al-leviate injuries due to repetitive motions.

The term ergonomics is derived from the Greek words “ergon,” which means work, and “no-moi,” which means natural laws. In the simplest terms, ergonomics is the study of how work is done and how to make work better. It has led to an entire subset of ergonomicsincluding prod-ucts that can make work better and are safer for the body. This is done by designing items that increase utility of the item, are more comfortable to use, and reduce injury through frequent use.

Ergonomic products are most readily associated with items of the workplace, including ergo-nomic keyboards, computer mice, office chairs, and lighting. But many industries have reevalu-ated operations to include tools that are ergonomic in design. Gardening is one area where ergo-nomics has become especially popular.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health estimates that the rate of hand injuries in the workplace is 25 hand injuries for every 10,000 full-time employees. However, hand, back and injuries of other areas of the body are also commonplace due to hobbies like gardening. Many people have considered giving up gardening due to the pain that ensues from using the wrong tools. Here are some ergonomic tools to consider for use while gardening.

* Extend a Hand Ergonomic Gardening Tool Set: These garden tools help individuals continue gardening tasks with ease and joint protection. The tools attach to the forearm and feature a right-angled grip to promote strength and leverage. Interchangeable heads turn the tool into a hoe, trowel, cultivator, or pruning saw.

* Radius Garden 102 Weeder Hand Tool: This device alleviates wrist and hand fatigue from gripping and pulling out weeds the traditional way. The weeder features a patented hand grip that pro-vides more leverage with less wrist stress. The aluminum blade helps to cut through weed roots and lift out weeds with minimal effort.

* Garden Works Ergonomic 7 Pattern Sprayer: Instead of squeezing a hand grip to activate the hose nozzle, this sprayer features a sliding thumb valve that controls water flow while reducing hand strain. The seven different water flow patterns allow gardeners to choose from misting to streaming water flows.

* Bond LH029 Ergonomic Handle Garden Spade: The handle and length of the tool is designed to create maximum comfort and leverage when digging in soil.

* Miracle Gro(R) Ergonomic Garden Feeder: This feeder has an ergonomic handle for an easy, stress-free grip. The trigger lock allows for one-handed control and three spray patterns.

Gardening doesn’t have to be painful when you use tools that are specially designed to fit the hand. They help alleviate strain to the wrist and elbow while maximizing leverage.

Choosing the right garden tools can alleviate pain and strain.

Make Your Home Safer For Kids According to the Home Safety Council, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing home injuries, half of the children who die before their first birthday die from choking or suffocation. Many times such tragedies can be averted.

Parents of very young children can and should take it upon themselves to safeguard their young-sters from various choking and suffocation hazards around the house. The Home Safety Council offers the following tips to parents hoping to do just that.

* Keep smaller items out of reach. In general, anything that can fit through a tube of toilet paper is big enough to cause a child to choke. This includes hard candies, coins, peanuts, and even la-tex balloons. Always store these items in closed areas or in places that are beyond a child’s reach.

* Make the crib a kids-only zone. Pillows, toys and comforters in a crib can cause a child to suffocate. Make the crib off-limits to these types of items, and always put children to bed on their backs.

* Clip window cords. Window cords, such as those that hang from blinds, can be very dangerous if they make their way into the hands of young children. Clip the loops in these window cords and make sure they are always high up the window where curious kids cannot reach them.

* Read all toy labels. Kids have so many toys that parents can easily overlook toys that might be safety hazards. Parents of especially young children might feel a little run down from raising their youngster and

unknowingly let a few toys slip past their radar. However, it’s imperative parents read all toy labels before handing the toys over to a child. Pay specific attention to the recommended ages for each toy, as those recommendations are often made with child safety in mind.

* Keep kids at an arm’s length at all times when around water. Another potential threat to kids’ safety around the house is water. Children can drown in as little as an inch of water, and it might only take a few minutes to do so. As a result, parents must be mindful and attentive whenever kids are around water. Bathtubs, toilets and, of course, pools present serious safety hazards to young kids. Whenever kids are around water, always stay within arm’s length.

* Erect a fence around a pool or spa. Many communities have laws in place that require pools to be fenced in. But those laws often only mandate the yard where the pool is located be fenced in. While that might be sufficient, it can also help to erect a fence around the pool itself and keep a lock on the gate to prevent curious youngsters from making their way to the pool unsupervised.

* Turn buckets and wading pools upside down when not in use. Many parents purchase wading pools so their kids have a fun place to relax on hot days. When the kids aren’t living it up, empty these pools and turn them upside down. Do the same with any buckets you have around the house. Whenever possible, store empty buckets outside the reach of children.

* Prevent burns. Adults know to be cautious around hot water, but kids often learn the hard way. To prevent burns, keep hot water at or below 120 F.

Spray Foam Insulation Combats Mold (MS) -- If you worry about mold in your home and are trying to find solutions, you can take one simple step to help prevent it from happening.

Mold is commonly found in houses that have poor wall insulation. As moisture builds up, the interior of the walls can slowly rot. This gives off a foul smell and reduces the overall stability and quality of a property. You may need to completely strip your walls to effectively repair them.

Such a repair can be expensive, but in order to prevent this situation from occurring, you can choose an alternate kind of insulation for your home. Spray foam insulation, like Icynene, is a good choice, especially for preventing mold. Unlike other insulation, spray foam protects your walls against moisture by forming an air barrier.

Prevention of mold, dust, dust mites and other common airborne irritants will improve the quality of the air in your home and ultimately the investment value of your house.

Pool Water Chemistry Basics Pool water chemistry is something that baffles many homeowners caring for their backyard pools. It is vital to keep an adequate level of cer-tain chemicals to create pris-tine, safe swimming water.

One of the most important tools to have is a pool/spa test kit. Sometimes pool packag-es will come with a basic test kit that measures for chlorine and pH only. This isn’t really

adequate for most people’s needs. Understanding the different facets of pool water chemistry will help illustrate why.

There are roughly six factors that come into play with pool water chemistry.1. Free chlorine (FC): Swimmer protection is provided by a sanitizer, generally a chlorine-based product. Free chlorine residual is the measure of the active, available chlorine sanitizer in the pool that is still able to clean the pool. Without FC, the pool will harbor bacteria and algae and turn swampy.2. Combined chlorine (CC): When chlorine combines with contaminants in the pool, like am-monia and organic materials, it essentially gets used up and becomes inactive. This is called combined chlorine. This type of chlorine is useless at this point and can contribute to that chlo-rine smell many people associate with too much chlorine in the pool. Rather, the opposite is the case. There is too much used-up chlorine and not enough FC. If CCis too high, it will be neces-sary to superchlorinate, or “shock” the pool, to rid the water of CC.3. Total chlorine (TC): This is the measure of the FCand CC in a pool. In perfect conditions where CC is zero, TC tests can be used in place of FC tests. However, most home pools have occasional issues of algae blooms or other problems, rendering a TC test inadequate for measuring true chlorine levels.4. Cyanuric Acid (CYA): Cyanuric acid is a product that helps buffer chlorine from the effects of the sun. Essentially you can think of CYAas sunscreen for chlorine. Without CYA, also known as stabilizer, in pool water -- and the right level of it present -- chlorine will burn off very quickly in the water. In full sunlight, it’s possible for chlorine to evaporate as fast as it is put into the pool without CYA.5. pH: This is the measure of whether the water is acidic or alkaline. Generally for swimming comfort, the pH of the pool should be kept between 7.2 and 7.6. This way there is no erosion of metal parts or discoloration of pool walls from water that is improp-erly balanced. Other chemicals in the pool also work more in harmony when water pH is right.6. Total Alkalinity (TA): TA helps buffer the pool water against big swings in pH levels, making the pool water more consistent.

PRAYER TO THEBLESSED VIRGIN(Never known to fail) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary con- ceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me.
