CLOUDCOMPUTING

WHAT YOUSHOULD KNOW

WHAT IS CLOUDCOMPUTING?

Cloud computing, also referred to as the

“cloud,” is the storage of data and

programs via the internet (Griffith 2016).

Cloud computing aims to eliminate or

reduce the need for onsite hardware,

and/or software by moving storage of

those devices to the internet (Huntington

2016).

Does Cloud Computing seem like a

foreign concept to you? Never fear, here

are a few examples:

Checking your email using a cloud

based webmail client such as

Microsoft Online or WebEx.

Collaborating in realtime on a shared

online spreadsheet using Google

Documents.

EXAMPLES OF CLOUDTECHNOLOGY

Renting a software application and

saving your document online.

Examples of this include saving a

Word document using Microsoft

Online or Photoshop image using

Adobe Cloud.

FORMS OF CLOUDCOMPUTINGInfrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

IaaS is a usage based model in which a

third party provider hosts storage and

Saving a document in an online cloud

storage account such as Dropbox, or

saving an image using Photobucket

WHY YOU SHOULD BEUSING CLOUDTECHNOLOGY

Cloud computing allows you to buy only

the services you want, thus requiring a

limited software licensing investment. It

cuts upfront costs and allows you to keep

up with current technology. In addition,

many Cloud Technology Applications

provide additional services such as

network management, security controls,

and advanced analytics  (Bretches 2015).

Software as a Service

SaaS is a software licensing model in

which software is software is developed,

maintained, and operated by the

software provider. SaaS is accessed via

a web browser and is centrally

hosted (Bretches 2015).

network services on behalf of its users

(Bretches 2015).

Platform as a Service (PaaS)

PaaS is a cloud computing model that

delivers applications via the internet.

Using this model, developers can

compose, manage, and run applications

on an IaaS environment (Bretches

2015).
