BULLETIN PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Yarra Bend Rotary

.

For the next two weeks I will be acting

President while Ken Maher attends to other

commitments. I’m pleased to report that the

recent Kew High School Chaplaincy

fundraising dinner was a resounding

success. About $7000 was raised and we

have received a certificate appreciation for

the contribution that Yarra Bend Rotary has

made to this very worthy cause.

The support that we provide to worthy

students, who cannot afford some of the

extra things available at the school is greatly

appreciated.

This week I was rostered on for attendance at

the Camberwell Sunday Market. The

inclement weather resulted in an

understandably small turnout of stall holders

and visitors. Under these conditions it was

impossible to continue, so the market was

closed down at about 10 am.

Unfortunately in these circumstances, which

are very rare, we don’t receive any share of

the day’s donation takings.

Members Moment – Tony Boyd Immigration and Population growth – Victoria

Based on available information from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Tony gave an informative

presentation on Victoria’s rapidly growing population. Graphs he used clearly indicate that the surge of

overseas immigration into Victoria has outperformed the forecasts of the ABS in recent years. Tony also

showed how the increase in both overseas and interstate migration is affecting suburbs in Boroondara with

Hawthorn and Hawthorn East in particular experiencing a big increase in population. He said the ABS stats

indicate that if the current trends continue, Melbourne will have a population of 6.2 million people by 2030.

He said the increase will have the potential for major ramifications on Melbourne’s infrastructure and

services.

Door Prize: This week’s chairman Bob Lambert, also picked up

the door prize?

Guest Speaker – Boroondara Mayor

Councilor Jim Parke

The Mayor of Boroondara, Councilor Jim Parke gave a very

informative and detailed presentation about the city’s current

planning strategies and the challenges Boroondara faces in

the year ahead.

Boroondara’s population is about 187,000 people and he said

both locals and the broader community appreciated the

municipality as a great place to live and work.

Planning and development is one of the council’s key issues,

He said the council wants to strike a balance between

protection of heritage buildings while making provision for new

housing developments.

Councilor Parke said a community consultation program

conducted last year received more than 12,000 responses

from Boroondara residents and the feedback from them now

underpins everything the council does and hopefully reflective

of the expectations of the local population.

Councilor Parke said that next week, Boroondara Council will adopt a revised plan for the year ahead.

Major works worth $58 will be spent building the Kew Recreation Centre, while other projects including the

Canterbury Hub, Balwyn Community Centre, and Camberwell Community are also on the councils building

program over the next four years.

Councilor Parke said the works on the Balwyn Library have been very successful and the Library is now the

second most attended library in Australia.

Future challenges the council must address includes the cost of recycling rubbish following new standards

required by China. Another issue for council is the state government’s preferred route of the North East

road link which will cut through parts of Boroondara. On a more sobering note, Councilor Parke said

homelessness in Boroondara is another issue that must be addressed with an estimated 400 plus people

having no permanent place of abode. He said the council has already established a ‘protocol’ to find ways

of assisting these people.

Councilor Parke’s tenure as Mayor will end later this year. He is a former head of ‘Crime Stoppers Australia’

and now taking a particular interest in law and order issues in the Boroondara area while working with local

police to develop ways to make communities more aware of their streets and familiarity with neighbours.
