Statistical reports (Facts and Figures) GPCA’s annual statistical reports provide up to date information about the industry and various industry segments. The GCC Chemical Industry Facts and Figures report, which is released in November every year on the occasion of the Annual Forum, contains a collection of data and statistics from member companies and regional and international organizations, providing a comprehensive analysis of the industry’s performance. GPCA also releases indicator reports that cover the fertilizers and plastic industries in the GCC and globally. Industry-trend reports GPCA publishes independent reports that provide an in-depth look at the state of innovation and sustainability in the industry or specific industry segments. These reports are aimed at bridging the gap between perception and reality and provide a summary of the discussions on these topics during GPCA conferences. ABOUT GPCAThe Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA) represents the downstream hydrocarbon industry in the Arabian Gulf. Established in 2006, the association voices the common interests of more than 250 member companies from the chemical and allied industries, accounting for over 95% of chemical output in the Arabian Gulf region. The industry makes up the second largest manufacturing sector in the region, producing over USD 108 billion worth of products a year.

The association supports the region’s petrochemical and chemical industry through advocacy, networking and thought leadership initiatives that help member companies to connect, share and advance knowledge, contribute to international dialogue, and become prime influencers in shaping the future of the global petrochemicals industry.

Committed to providing a regional platform for stakeholders from across the industry, GPCA manages six working committees - Plastics, Supply Chain, Fertilizers, International Trade, Research and Innovation, and Responsible Care - and organizes six world-class events each year. The association also publishes an annual report, regular newsletters and industry reports.

HISTORYIn response to the need for a representative body for the petrochemical and chemical industry in the Arabian Gulf region, GPCA was established in 2006 by eight visionary founding members; SABIC and TASNEE from Saudi Arabia, Qatar Petroleum and Qatar Vinyl Company from Qatar, EQUATE and PIC from Kuwait, Borouge from the UAE and GPIC from Bahrain. GPCA was established to support the interest of the growing chemical industry in the Arabian Gulf region.

Throughout the years, the association has continued to expand its membership base with a CAGR of 9% in the first decade since its establishment.

GPCA Research and Innovation Summit

The GPCA Research and Innovation Summit serves as a platform to discuss ways and means for creating a culture of innovation within the regional chemical industry. The summit also engages stakeholders in the debate to develop innovation capabilities within the region. It has widely been been praised for providing the needed platform to build strong understanding of R&I in the region seen as the key area of strategic development for the industry. The first edition of the R&I Summit was held in 2013.

GPCA PlastiCon

PlastiCon is an annual GPCA event that caters to the plastics segment of the petrochemical industry. The conference provides up to date views, trends and developments in the regional and global plastics conversion industry including detailed information on trending topics. GPCA PlastiCon also hosts the GPCA Plastics Excellence Awards, recognizing innovation in plastics conversion and allied industries in addition to supporting students with their achievements.

GPCA Responsible Care Conference

GPCA launched the Responsible Care Conference in 2015 with the aim of raising awareness on the program’s framework and to measure companies’ performance. The GPCA Responsible Care Conference focuses on health, safety and environmental matters relevant to the chemical industry and serves as a platform for companies to share best practices and success stories. The conference also focuses on steering the industry towards a safer and sustainable future. The Responsible Care Awards were established in 2015 with the aim to honor companies who have reached remarkable milestones within the Responsible Care program and within the industry.

GPCA Supply Chain Conference

The GPCA Supply Chain Conference focuses on effective supply chain management within chemical companies across the Arabian Gulf region. It also provides a platform to facilitate discussion on key industry trends and growth opportunities. The GPCA Supply Chain Conference highlights the role and development of the sector and highlights the latest trends, challenges and opportunities. GPCA launched the first edition of its Supply Chain Conference in 2009. In 2016, GPCA launched “GPCA Supply Chain Excellence Awards” with the aim to recognize outstanding organizations, academia and individuals who have developed game-changing ideas and projects within the supply chain sector.

GPCA Fertilizer Convention

The GPCA Fertilizer Convention is an annual event that brings together senior executives from the key industrial fertilizers producers in the GCC, fertilizer consumers and government representatives to exchange information and to explore and deliberate key issues regarding food security and long-term strategies for sustainable fertilizer manufacturing and application. The Fertilizer Convention provides analysis on both regional and global market trends. The first GPCA Fertilizer Convention was held in 2010.

Annual GPCA Forum

Over the past decade, the Annual GPCA Forum has not only become a key feature in the global chemical industry agenda, but also a crucial knowledge sharing and networking platform for regional and global stakeholders. In 2015, over 2,000 members of the international chemical community gathered together in Dubai to celebrate the achievements and growth of the petrochemical industry in the Arabian Gulf region and 10 years of the Annual Forum, which throughout the years have become a key feature in the global chemical industry agenda. This is a must-attend event for senior business executives from the region and globally. Prominent speaker line-ups at the past forums have included H.E. The GPCA Legacy Initiative and GPCA Legacy Award “Al-Rowad” (الّرواد) have been established to recognize the pioneers of the chemical industry in the Arabian Gulf region. The annual program honors individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to foster and strengthen the petrochemical industry in one or more of the GCC states. By recognizing these individuals GPCA makes their achievements known to current generations, thereby encouraging emulation and fostering national pride.

First launched in Canada in 1985, Responsible Care® is a global, voluntary initiative adopted by the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) to drive continuous improvement and achieve excellence in environmental, health and safety and security performance. GPCA successfully adopted Responsible Care in 2009 with the majority of its members embedding the program in their everyday operations. GPCA’s Responsible Care journey began with 90% of GPCA members signing a declaration to announce their commitment to the initiative. In addition, 35% of GPCA’s full members have already obtained certifications for the Responsible Care Management System Standard also known as RC 14001. The ICCA, which represents the industry on a global level, consistently ranked GPCA as one of the top performing associations for the implementation of the initiative. GPCA launched the first Responsible Care Conference in 2015, which is designed as a meeting place for industry professionals to discuss strategies related to health, safety, security, and environmental issues in a single platform. The GPCA Responsible Care Awards were launched during the first edition of the conference and aim to recognize companies and individuals that have exemplified outstanding performance in the execution of Responsible Care within their organizations.

Gulf Sustainability and Quality Assessment System (SQAS) was launched by GPCA and spearheaded by the GPCA Supply Chain Committee in the month of August 2013. Gulf SQAS is a system that extends Responsible Care throughout the product supply chain by evaluating the quality, safety, security and environmental performance of Logistics Service Providers. 29 CEOs from GPCA member companies GPCA member companies signed the Declaration of Support, committing to adhere to the principles of Gulf SQAS. Since then, a growing number of chemical companies in the GCC have applied the system in their organizations where it aims to be the primary EHSS&Q system in the gulf region.

AwardsGPCA’s annual award series aim to distinguish and honor excellence in the regional petrochemical and chemical industry and boost the industry’s competitiveness. The Award categories range from companies, projects and research and extend to students and academia in the Arabian Gulf region.

Leaders of Tomorrow is considered as the first official collective step where industry stakeholders collaborate in shaping skills and preparing the future industry leaders with the required skill set.

ADVOCACY

Waste Free Environment is an annual environmental and educational initiative that falls under GPCA’s broader advocacy pillar. The campaign aims to promote responsible litter disposal and educate youth on waste management and consumption. Since its inception and with the support of GPCA members, the campaign evolved into a global educational awareness and community campaign taking place in 10 countries across the world. In 2016, the campaign was awarded “Best CSR Initiative of the Year” at the ITP Oil and Gas and Refining and Petrochemical Awards, Middle East.
