Reaching out to locals>> National government reaches out to Tongaat organisations
NOXOLO MEMELA
THE Tongaat ChildWelfare, De-partment of Home Affairs, thepolice station and Association
Senior Citizens of Tongaat (Ascot)were buzzing with excitement lastWednesday when the ANC Tongaatconstituency together with memberof parliament Gloria Borman visitedthem to monitor service delivery.
Accompanied by Tongaat parlia-mentaryconstituencyofficeadminis-trator Desmond Chellan, Borman, who sits on the human settlementportfolio at national level, toured theareas, carefully checking facilities inbetweeninteractingwithmembersofthe public and employees on levels ofservice and employment conditions.
Bothstaff and thepublicwerevisi-blysurprisedbyBorman'svisitasshewalked about interacting with themat their work stations and in waiting
areas.Borman told the Weekly that the
exercise was in line with the presi-dent's call for efficiency and activevisibility.
“Apart from creating an interfacebetweenthecommunityandnationalgovernment, we are trying to get asense of how our services are re-ceived by the public.
“We must keep in mind that ourperformance agreement with thepresident requires us to ensure im-provement of waiting time for mem-bers of the public to access particularservicesandweneedtoextendahelp-ing hand where we can.”
Chairman of Ascot Rajan Chen-gadu said they are happy that thereis an MP who is conducting govern-ment's oversight role.
“She seems prepared to help usandwearehopeful that shewill cometo our aid.”
All the institutions experienceddifferenthurdlesincludinglackingfa-cilities and irregular maintenance.
During the visit to the Tongaat po-licestationBormannotedanupgradeto the building was needed as the ca-pacity of the staff cannot be accom-modated in the current structure.
She also noticed defects in thebuilding structure which needed im-mediate attention.
“Visits of public service deliverypoints are a regular exercise carriedoutby theANCandwewill continue,”said Chellan.

Hoosen echoed Macpherson's sentimentssaying the party had seen a trend of hopeless-ness throughout the country.
“Wheneverwehave these events there arealways young men and women attending. They are always complaining about a lack ofjobsandno real contribution to the communi-ty.Wearehopingtoexplaintopeoplethatthereare other choices.
“Wehave also been asked to come throughtomany of these areas because people are fedup with the ruling party.
“We have seen our democracy mature inthe past few years. People no longer feel theyare being catered for and rightfully so.
“Theyarebeing ignoredand there is a shiftfrom what we knew as a country previously.”
Addressing the community Mchunu saidhe was there to take their concerns to parlia-ment and give them a voice.
He said there had been minimal changeover the past 20 years with the elderly, youthand middle aged still going to bedhungry.
“And now, we find the ANC will be hostingmany sod turning ceremonies and food packgive away's.
“This is not service delivery. This is lies. InthisareaofGwala'sFarmthereare100housesbuilt.Butdidyouknow that therewas a budg-et for 200? What happened to themoney?
“This year R150 billion allocated for youthdevelopment went back to government. Whywas thisnotused to fundhouses? It is becausetheywant tokeepthemoneywith themingov-ernment. They do not see the struggles youhave.”
Mchunu asked people to question whatfreedom has really turned out to be after 20years.
“Ourpeople are livingworse than ever. Butyou have a choice to vote for corruption andgreed or to vote for change.”
Questioning Mchunu, one communitymember Vincent Shabane asked why he wasstill without a job for years now.
“I left school in 1981and today I amsuffer-ing like I have not suffered before.
“There is nomoney and I have to take careof others and myself. What can you do?”
Mchunu replied: “I am glad you raised thisissue. I want to tell you that your job situationisnot isolated.LikeIsaid, therearebillionsbe-ing thrown back into ANC coffers while yousuffer.
“Remember that who you vote for deter-mines many things in this country.
A vote for the ANC is a vote for corruptionand lies.”

FREE prostate cancer screening atAlberlito HospitalEARLY detection of prostate cancer is the answer. Themost common cancer in men is cancer of the prostate.
The probability of the disease increases with age. Theprostate is a walnutsized gland that sits just below
the bladder and playsan important part insexual health.
The good news isthat prostate cancer isalso one of the mosttreatable forms of cancer. Caught early, thesurvival rate for prostate cancer is nearly100%.
However, becausethere are often few orno symptoms, manymen frequently don’tdiscover that they havethe disease until it is advanced.
That is why early detection is the key andregular screenings areimportant.
What does screening mean? Screeningmeans looking for signsof the disease in peoplewho have no symptoms, for earlystagedisease when treatment will be more effective.
Due to the lack ofawareness regardingprostate cancer and asa service to the community, there will be FREEscreening at AlberlitoHospitalonThursday,17October from 9am until1pm. A few minutes ofyour time could make ahuge difference to yourhealth, your lifestyleand that of your familytoo.

As parents of a child with autism spectrum disorder, our greatest fear was releasing our child into the unknownworld, especially since he had severe speech delays.
The best decision that my husband and I ever made was placing our son in the care of “Little Angels Club”. Hewas welcomed into a friendly and warm environment, with nurturing teachers. Within a short period of time wehad noticed the impact of the teaching staff as our son began to display a great level of independence, impeccable manners and curriculum based work. He also developed socially and now integrates so well withothers. No amount of words could express our gratitude to everybody at “Little Angels Club”. It is definitely ahomeaway fromhome.
Preshima
I had been to numerous crèches in Tongaat, and without a doubt, it was LittleAngels Club that stood out themostfrom all. This was because it offered a holistic, child-centred programme for kids in a homely and secureenvironment with caring and dedicated staff. The numerous play activities at the crèchewill ensure that any childwill be happy here. It is clear that the owner Premie Singh has a passion for children and goes the extra mile inensuring kids are happy and safe.
Jayshri
A good day-care centre should have a welcoming and friendly atmosphere and be known for its nurturingenvironment. We have discovered this andmuchmore at LittleAngels Club. The staff are just Fantastic. In In thelast two years that my childAmeesha has attended LittleAngels Club, you have been a huge support. Thank youPremie andRanikha for a jobwell done.
Melissa
Peace of mind is an inexpensive quality. Often when it comes to our children’s choice of school, we basejudgement of referrals, good results and great teachers. But when your child is only 4 years old, it’s really hard todecide which is more important than the other. Whichever way one may look at it, it’s still in the simplest senseleaving your childwith strangers.
That’s where relationships built, Right now I can honestly say: the best decision I made for Yandisa was to enrolher at LittleAngels Club. In just a fewmonths, she has grown educationally, her communication skills, numeracyand hygiene. She’s simply a child who loves being at crèche. For any parent, that’s the kind of “peace of mind”that money cannot buy. I can go to bed every night knowing that my child, does not only attend another crèche, but to a “family” that has her best interests in all aspects of a developing child.
Sne
I am very happy with my child Esethu’s progress, she joined the school in February 2013 with no understandingof English, alphabets and counting but after a fewmonths in LittleAngels Club she progressed so well and doinggreat. Thank you verymuch
Molly
Little Angels Club is a clean, well maintained day-care. The staff is caring and nurturing. I’m a very picky motherand will not put my child in a day-care that I do not whole heartedly trust. They even take your child to the doctor ifsick. My child is there from 4months old and has learnt so much. Now he is 1 year 6 months and he don’t want tocome home with me. He says “bye” and “go away” and most importantly my child is happy and safe. They areorganized and label your child’s belongings; they follow instructions for feeding and even when giving medicine. They excellent at updating you about your child at all times. My child’s name is MohammadAzmeer and I am ahappymumand so ismy child. Do see LittleAngelsClub for yourselves.Youwill never regret it.

WEEKS later, the tragic collision on FieldsHill still has people reeling in horror. Theimages of the truck obliterating the vehicles in its path, are still etched in ourmindsasweevaluateourownvulnerability.
In the days after the accident, thetruck company admitted that it established the drivers documentation wasfraudulent. The extent of the company’sliability in this regard, is yet to be determined by the courts.
What this incident does highlight, isthe absolute necessity for compliance
and verification. In larger business environments, this is referred to as ‘CorporateGovernance’. In very broad and simplisticterms, people who are entrusted withcertain duties and responsibilities, are tofulfil such activities faithfully and diligently.
Should there be some loss or damageresulting from a failure to carry out sucha task, then that person and the company are at risk.
The degree of exposure of such riskwill depend on the circumstances. Inmost cases, there will be civil consequences, but in some, there may be criminal sanctions.
Often, it is the small oversights anderrors that have the most grave and lifechanging consequences.
It does not have to result in loss of life, like in the Sagekal Fields Hill accident.
It could be a small clerical error thatresults in financial loss to a business withthe termination of employment. Whatpeople must be mindful of is that our society and environment has evolved intoan extremely litigious culture.
In plain terms, this means that peopleand the business often don’t hesitatetaking legal action if there has been atransgression of some kind. It is imperative that people and businesses operatewith a higher degree of diligence andcommitment to avoid dire consequences.
LEGAL LEGWORK
ComplianceLAST week I heard one of the most pre
posterous stories on 5fm. On my wayto work the SABC run station ran a
lead story about transport minister DipouPeters saying that only a “few” people areagainst the implementation of etolls inGauteng, with the majority in favour ofhaving “world class roads”.
President Jacob Zuma recently signedinto law the Transport Laws and RelatedMatters Amendment Bill, which paves theway for the implementation of etolling.
Now this is not the first time a government official has said something so outrageously nonfactual and blatantly ignorant.
This happens all the time with politicians. The spin. That's what its called in theever back stabbing world of politics. Takesomething super ridiculous and make itseem a little bit okay. A run of the mill eventif you will.
But the reality of how we live as SouthAfricans on a day to day basis paints quitea despondent picture.
Despite what we are told by economists, thereisalotofmoneyinthiscountry. We are often referred to as the UnitedStates of Africa. And this is a fairly accuratecomparison.
Our country has billions of rands at itsdisposal that is being squandered by local, provincial and national politicians.
Many of the comments you read in thisvery paper as well as the broadsheets ismerely what reporters can tell you.
We have to give you factual information. But the truth is, there are many shoddy deals both here in Tongaat and Verulamas well as the rest of the country, which arealways benefitting politicians.
The Etolling matter for example. Thiscomes despite the fact that there is a fuellevy that has been implemented by government.
Where are the civic associations?Where are the councillors who are meant
to be implementing or “working together”to help these small communities?
This is where it all starts. Now of courseI'm not saying that all your local politiciansare involved in shoddy dealings.
But my friends, trust me, some of themare.
And wow, they make a lot more moneythan you or I. I like to call it the comfortmarker. Over R25 000 per month.
How has Tongaat, for example, improved since 2011?
To me it looks shockingly the same, andI visit all townships and suburbs on a dailybasis.
You, the socalled community, are letting yourselves down.
You are never at public meetings. There are a handful of familiar faces
that are making key decisions and leaving“the general” comments with the newspaper.
Is this the society you want your children and great grandchildren to live in?Live up to the legacy of stalwarts like BillyNair. Don't just name drop or enjoy yourarmchair critic status.
Go out to these meetings and make adifference.
Hold your public officials to account. Ifyou don't, stop complaining.
Where do politicians get off?

Though it's been a year since you have entered
heavens gates we feel you near. In life we
loved you dearly, in death we still love you. In
our hearts you hold a place that no one can fill.
It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not
go alone, part of us went with you the day God
took you home.
Psalms1116 - 15 Precious in the sight of the
Lord is the death of his saints.
Sadly missed by your children, grandchildren,
