The draft bill is available in the website for reference. Many of the clauses in the Bill are against the interest of Doctors practising modern medicine, the best example being the National level exit examination mentioned in CHAPTER IV. NATIONAL LEVEL EXIT EXAMINATION (2) The examination shall also be open for professionals who have received requisite medical/health related training from an academic or non academic institution recognised by the Council but have not been able to pass a university level examination, as well as for individuals holding a foreign post graduate degree in medicine or health, where such a degree has been obtained from an institution not recognised by the Council. (3) The national exit exam will be equivalent to an MD/MS awarded by any recognised university in the country. (7) The national exit examinations shall be conducted online through the internet, and will mostly follow a multiple choice format including the clinical aspect of medical practice as may be prescribed. (8) Individuals possessing the requisite criteria, as prescribed by the Council, for appearing for the national exit exam will be classified as ‘board eligible’, upon passing the exam, an individual will be classified as ‘board certified’. (10) All ‘board eligible’ candidates may practice in non-academic institutions. To be appointed in an academic institution, an individual will need to either possess a post graduate degree from a recognised university or be ‘board certified’. Please join IMA in its fight against all the unacceptable clauses in the bill. Sudheendran, Transplant Surgeon and Consultant in G. I. Surgery, AIMS, chaired the session. Dr. Thomas Varghese, Oncology Surgeon (Lakeshore) presented a novel lateral approach for thyroidectomy which produce a relatively avascular field. Dr. Johnny Cyriac (Gastroenterology, PVSM Hospital) presented a 53 year old male with intractable vomiting which resulted in hydropneumothorax requiring thoracotomy, drainage and subsequent stenting. Bleeding into the thoracic cavity continued requiring repositioning of the stent with improvement. Dr. George Varghese (ENT, Cochin Hospital) then discussed nasal endoscopic approach for removal of a nonfunctioning pituitary macroadenoma. This approach, as against the conventional transsphenoidal route claims better visualization and possibility of complete removal. Dr. Sandhya (Giridhar Eye Hospital) presented a 26 year old pregnant lady who experienced visual loss following vomiting and was found to have a large subhyaloid hemorrhage in the right eye. Since retinal detachment and visual loss could ensue, she underwent hyaliodectomy with YAG laser with considerable clearing of the bleed and improved vision. This complication is known to occur in pregnancy. 15/15 cases managed at the Centre had shown recovery. Dr. Krishna Kumar (Orthopedics, AIMS) presented an elderly male with fever and severe back pain, gouty tophi and raised uric acid with L4-5 destruction and cord compression. Infection was suspected. However, at surgery, chalky material was found instead of pus making a diagnosis of Gouty Spine. A rare disorder, treatment consists of medical therapy decompression and stabilization. The latter two cases shared the prize for the best presentation of the evening. 29 September - World Heart Day

O U R C O L U M NDear colleague,

Another IMA year is coming to an end. When we look back at the glimpses of our activities it gives us a feeling that we could do something for the IMA fraternity. In addition to continuing the existing projects of IMA Cochin, we could introduce new projects and events like Total Blood Literacy Project, BLS for the police force, Health privilege cards for the Press, Shuttle badminton tournament, Ifthar party etc. IMAFEST was a success story for which toiled throughout the year 2010. In addition to our routine CME programs we had an opportunity to host the National level CME on Redefining Medical Ethics. The Cultural wing and IMA-AMS were started this year. We showed our protest in BRHC and Physiotherapist issue and hospital attacks.

We could add 100 new life members to IMA Cochin this year. 250 members were added to the lagoon. Some steps could be taken to bring down the loan liability of IMA House. None of these achievements would have been possible without the support of each and every member of our branch. Our sincere thanks to you. There might have been instances when we could not rise to your expectations in meeting your requirements. Kindly excuse us for such lapses.

The new team of office bearers under the Presidentship of Dr. Abraham Varghese have been elected for the next year. We wish them all success in taking IMA Cochin to greater heights.

a BIG THaNK YOu TO aLL MEMBErS.

dr. S.S. Kamath dr. M. Narayanan President Secretary

There were delegates from all leading dailies, Visual media, Radio stations and Health magazines. The workshop was widely appreciated by the print media.

The workshop began at 10.30 am with the welcome and presidential address by Dr. S. Sachidananda Kamath. Dr. K.V. Beena, Dist. Programme Manager, NRHM Ernakulam in her opening remarks stressed the need of an evidence based reporting and also explained the various activities of the NRHM. Dr. Abraham Varghese, the Programme Convenor gave an overview of the workshop.

The wide canvas of health concerns taken up by the media should be evidence-based. This was the essence of the workshop held here. Dr. Babu Raveendran, former National Vice-President of IMA, speaking on ‘Empowering journalists for a healthy reporting’, said that there are many misleading reports in various print and visual media regarding immunization programs that has cost much damage to the Govt. programmes.

Speaking on mental health reporting with special emphasis on suicide reporting, Dr. C.J. John, Psychiatrist, said that there has been a study abroad on how media reports on suicides have prompted more suicides.

State level Work shop for Journalists on Healthy Reporting of Health IssuesDr. Abraham Varghese, Vice President & Programme Convenor

In the session on ‘Reporting vaccine failures and epidemics’, Dr. P.N.N. Pisharody, State President of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics said that gravity of the diseases which the vaccines prevent is not being realized by the anti-vaccine movement.

In the final session on ‘Release of information regarding attacks on medical professionals and hospitals’, Dr. K.E. Paulose, former National Vice-President of the IMA, said that the state government’s ordinance of protection of health service personnel and hospital property has perhaps proved to be a deterrent for attacks on hospitals and doctors.

Dr. M. Bhaskaran, National Vice-president of IMA, who chaired two sessions, said that the media should keep in mind the benefit of the public while reporting health or medical issues. Senior journalists from various media organizations co-chaired the sessions. It was pointed out that many events on commercialization of the medical profession were brought to light only by a vigilant media.

Sachidananda Kamath, President, IMA Cochin, Dr. M. Narayanan, Secretary, IMA Cochin, Mr. Abdullah Mattanchery, President, Ernakulam Press Club and Mr. M.S.
