COLLEGE OF MEDICINE ADMISSION The Committee on Admissions The Committee on Admissions has the authority to determine the criteria of selection and to recommend who from among the applicants are qualified students. The College selects applicants based on intellectual and personal preparedness irrespective of sex, religious belief and political affiliation. It reserves the right to deny admission to any applicant whose admission is deemed inimical to the best of the College and the University. General Policies on Admission 1. An applicant must be of good moral character. 2. An applicant must have no record of final conviction for a crime. 3. An applicant must have good academic records, in compliance with the standards set forth by the Admissions Committee. 4. An applicant must undergo and pass the interview process on the data scheduled y the Admissions Committee. 5. A student may apply only one per school year. He shall ranked based on documents submitted prior to his interview. 6. The College has the prerogative to determine the number of students who shall be admitted. 7. Filipino students shall be given priority on admission. 8. A student who qualified for enrollment but failed to enroll in that particular school year shall have to reapply and undergo the screening process anew. 9. As per Board of Regents resolution no. 68, s. 2001, 75% of available slots shall be given to enrollees permanently residing in Region VI, and the remaining slots shall be filled by applicants from other regions in the country. 10. Other relevant University rules on admission which are contradictory to the preceding rules shall apply. Requirements 1. New students and/or qualified transferees are admitted only to the first year class in the first semester. 2. He / She must be holder of a Bachelors degree in science or arts (AB/BS) conferred upon by a duly recognized educational institution. 3. He/she must have taken the National Medical Admission Test (NMAT). The West Visayas State University College of Medicine requires an NMAT percentile rank of at least 60%. 4. He / She must present a Certificate of Good Moral Character from two College professors. 5. He / She must present a Birth Certificate. 6. He / She must submit a Transcript of Records showing completion of a degree course.

For graduates of private schools, the Transcript of Records is validated by a Special order from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). For graduates of public schools, the diploma and Certificate of Graduation must be presented.8. The applicant must have a weighted average equivalent to 2.5 (80) or better in all his/her College subjects for the degree obtained, or in the first seven semester for the College degree being pursued if the students is graduation in the second semester of the current year.9. Application for admission may be obtained from the Office of the Registrar, College of Medicine starting January 2 of the current year. He deadline is March 31 of the same year (for the first batch of applicants). Deadline of submission of application for the second batch of applicants shall set by the Admissions Committee.10. The official application from must be accompanied by: Certified Machine Copy of NMAT results Certified Machine Copy of Transcript of Records 2 pieces 2x2 ID picture Self-addressed stamped envelope Certified machine copy of latest income Tax Return of parents Certified machine copy of live birth certificate11. Qualified applicants must submit to a personal interview scheduled by the Committee on Admissions.12. Qualified applicants must pass the Physical Examination to be conducted by the West Visayas State University Medical Center physicians and the University dentist.13. Upon enrolment, the following must be submitted: Original copy of Honorable dismissal Original copy of NMAT result Certificate of Live Birth Physical and Dental Examination results Original copy of Transcript of Records Certificate of Good Moral Character Certificate of Graduation Special order for graduates of Private Schools

CURRICULUMResponding to the challenges of medical education, the College of Medicine embarked on a new strategy, the Problem Based Learning approach. This is an innovative approach in which students tackle problems in small groups under the supervision of a tutor. Once presented with a problem, the student is expected to undergo the following processes: hypothesis generation, inquiry, data analysis and decision-making. By observing a scientific process of reasoning, the student will learn in context and integrate the subject matter around professionally relevant problems. Being student-centered, this self-directed learning strategy aims to:a. enhance the individuals intrinsic motivation to learnb. enable the student to acquire the following:> problem solving skills> interpersonal skills

COMMUNITY WORKCOMMUNITY BASED LEADERSHIP PROGRAM I

RESEARCH IThis is a course on research methodology. Topics include ethical and legal considerations of research, research problem formulation and variable identification, study designs, review of literature, sampling and sample size estimation, data collection and presentation, and research work plan preparation. Hands-on experience on commonly used software programs (EPI-Infor and SPSS) are provided. At the end of the academic year, the students in groups, present for approval one pharmacology-based and one community-based research protocol.

ADMISSIONS General Admission Policies1. Only applicants of good moral character shall be admitted.2. Only applicants who have never been convicted of a crime shall be admitted.3. Only applicants with good academic records shall be considered for admission.4. Only applicants with the personality and attitudes considered suitable for a career in medicine shall be accepted.5. The maximum number of students that can be accommodated without compromising teaching learning effectiveness shall be admitted.6. Filipino citizens shall be given priority on admission.7. An admitted student who fails to enroll may be admitted in any succeeding year only after he/she re-applies and is selected on competitive basis with the rest of the applicants for that year.8. Qualified applicants who are not admitted may re-apply in any succeeding year.9. Students who have been dropped from the rolls of the UPCM or other medical schools shall be denied admission or re-admission.10. Medical students from other medical schools are NOT eligible for admission to any Learning Unit.11. Other relevant University rules on admission which are not contradictory to the preceding rules shall apply.12. The Admissions Committee and the UPCM reserve the right to refuse admissions to any applicant on the basis of standards and criteria set forth by the Committee as mandated by the proper University officials.

The Admission ProcessApplicants may apply either as Direct or Lateral entrants to the Doctor of Medicine Program of the UP College of Medicine. Only lateral entrants may signify their interest in the MD-PhD program.

ADMISSION TO LEARNING UNIT (LU) IIIThe Medicine Proper is a five-year study of basic and clinical sciences, humanities and internship.1. Only applicants who will have obtained their Baccalaureate degree (Bachelor in Science or Arts) by the end of the preceding academic year or earlier are eligible. Applicants who will obtain their Baccalaureate degree in the summer prior to the school year applied for are NOT eligible for admission.

2. The applicant must have a valid National Medical Admission Test (NMAT) score not lower than 90th percentile taken within the last two years prior to the application. 3. ALL APPLICANTS ARE REQUIRED TO SIGN A RETURN SERVICE CONTRACT. FOR ALL REGIONALIZATION PROGRAM (RP) & INDIGENOUS PEOPLE (IP) APPLICANTS: ACCEPTANCE TO SERVE AND ASSUMPTION OF LIABILITY (ASAL) AGREEMENT FOR ALL OTHER APPLICANTS: RETURN SERVICE AGREEMENT (RSA)

4. The highest ranking applicants based on the above requirements will be further evaluated in an interview by a faculty panel.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTSA complete application, which must be submitted in a long brown envelope with the applicants printed name (surname first) written in pencil only, includes the following: A properly accomplished application form of the U.P. College of Medicine. Application forms will be made available upon cash payment of an application fee: P1,500 for Filipino applicants , which is NON-REFUNDABLE (Note: The Application Form is valid only for the Academic Year applied for) ORIGINAL/OFFICIAL Transcript of Records for at least the first three and one half (3-1/2) years of the Baccalaureate Program. Four copies of 2x2 pictures signed by the applicant on the front of the picture. Certified true copy of NSO Birth Certificate. (A photocopy is acceptable provided the original is shown for verification). Original Certificate of Naturalization for naturalized Filipino citizens. ONLY original Certificates of Naturalization and other documents issued by the Commission on Immigration and Deportation shall be acceptable. Applicants with PENDING naturalization papers and documents are NOT eligible for admission. Latest True copy of Income Tax Returns (ITR) of both parents.(A photocopy is acceptable provided the original is shown for verification) Original plus a photocopy of the NMAT result. DOST Clearance for students who have availed of DOST scholarships in college.Applicants who have obtained their Baccalaureate degree during the first semester or earlier are encouraged to submit their complete applications before the deadline to facilitate the processing of their applications.

IMMUNIZATIONAn immunization certificate and catch-up immunization will be required for enrolment. The vaccines recommended for yet susceptible students are: MMR, dT, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis A. Optional vaccines are: Rabies, Typhoid and Meningococcal vaccines. Screening and immunization can be done by the UP Manila Health Service at minimal cost.

PHILHEALTH MEMBERSHIPAll students will be required to enroll as members of PhilHealth.
