College of Education Speaker

David Alvarado

David is the youngest of five siblings. His parents were migrant workers that came to work in Ohio from Texas; neither of them progressed beyond an 8th grade education. Even though David’s father was both an alcoholic and drug user and was in and out of jail, his mother instilled the importance of education in her children. She knew the value

of education and often said, “I worked in the fields so that they didn’t have to”. She wanted her children to have equal access to education and have the same opportunities as their peers. This is why she insisted her children use English as their primary language. She did not want a language barrier to give others a negative perception of her children’s cognitive abilities. All of her children exceeded her education and graduated from high school; four received college degrees.

While attending college to become a teacher, David worked as a juvenile corrections officer at a detention facility. After graduation, David hoped to inspire youth from all backgrounds to achieve their goals no matter what the circumstance by becoming a juvenile probation officer. After six years working with the Seneca County Juvenile Court, David continued his journey of working with diverse youth and accepted his first teaching position with Tiffin City Schools in a program for at-risk students. While working with Tiffin City Schools, David earned his master’s degree in educational administration and supervision, as well as his principal’s license from Bowling Green State University. He then accepted a position with Findlay City Schools, spending the next 14 years as a building principal. After earning his superintendent license through the University of Findlay, David has spent the past two years as superintendent of Hopewell-Loudon Local Schools. This is the same district where he spent his K-12 years as a student.

David lives in the Tiffin area with his wife of 25 years, Jeanine. They have two children: Dylan, a 2016 graduate of Hopewell-Loudon and current sophomore at the University of Toledo, and Ryan, a soon-to-be 2018 graduate of Hopewell-Loudon and future freshman at The Ohio State University.
