A good way to reduce the ecological footprint is to maximize the local and

    sustainable agriculture.

Can you imagine how many intermediaries are needed to get the produce arrive to

their consumers? Actually, more than our planet can afford, the reason why WE have

    to CHANGE it.

We visited Nottingham University to look at the eco-buildings on the

two campuses. The buildings we saw included roofs covered by low-

growing alpine plants which help insulate and maintain steady

temperatures within the buildings throughout the year, heat recovery

mechanical ventilation systems and lighting sensors to reduce

energy consumption. The many windows let in plenty of natural light,

which helps to save electricity. It was an interesting visit.

The St Anns Allotments, Nottingham, is a very special and unique

allotment site. It is the oldest and largest area of Victoriandetached town gardens in the world and has recently been listed

with a Grade 2* by English Heritage. The site covers 75 acres

and sits in the heart of the one of the most deprived inner-city

communities in the country. It is very sustainable.

Hockerton Housing Project (HHP) is a self-sufficient co-housing development which began in

1996.The earth-sheltered homes are built with high thermal mass and high levels of insulation to

eliminate the need for heating systems. Residents of the five houses generate their own cleanenergy to meet their remaining energy needs. They also grow most of their own food, harvest their

own water and recycle waste materials. The residents are extremely self-sufficient and the project

is a prime example of how we can move towards a more sustainable future. During our visit we

had the chance to look around one of the eco-houses and were enformed about the entire project

through an interesting presentation lead by one of the residents.
