RELIGIOUS DIMENSIONthis Sunday Catholic Churches throughout Australia will launch the annual Social Justice Statement. this year the theme is 'Building Bridges, Not Walls' prisons and the Justice System. the document urges us to all think about the conditions in our prisons and to ask who are the most likely to find themselves there. In our diocese we have 3 prisons: they are at port Augusta, port Lincoln and Cadell in the Riverland. We have chaplains who visit the jails each week and give support to the people who are there. I do know some people in our prisons and I am very mindful of them and the affects of their actions on them and their families. Again and again in the gospels, we read how Jesus reaches out to the marginalised and rejected and called on his followers to do the same. In the document we can read and reflect on the Church's stance and it may help our understanding of the situation of people in our prisons. If you wish to read the document you can go online at www.catholic.org.au

Next tuesday evening we begin our RCIA. We have a few enquirers. the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a "user friendly" introduction to what we as Catholics believe and how we live out our beliefs. the sessions are once a fortnight to begin with - where interested adults learn about us in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. For over 30 years Whyalla RCIA programs have welcomed many enquirers in a process adapted to suit individual needs, and joyfully initiated a large number of them as new members of our parish family. If you know anyone who might be interested we begin next tuesday evening, September 27 at St teresa's parish hall at 7:30pm.

As we come to the last week of term we give thanks for the many activities of the College especially the presence of the students at the weekday liturgies of our Churches.

the last shall be first and the first shall be last.

Matthew 20:1-16

When listening to readings from the bible, it often helps to understand the background to the world of the text to gain its full meaning. Such is the case with the gospel for last Sunday.

In the gospel we hear about the workers in the vineyard who are offered a fair wage to work in the vineyard. the workers in greco – Roman times would assemble in the town square waiting for employers to hire them. No work meant the workers could not feed their families.

Some workers are hired at the start of the day, others are hired at later times in the day, but are all offered the same fair wage as those who started at the beginning of the day.

the trouble begins when the master of the vineyard pays the workers at the end of the day. the master lines up the workers with those who started last, lining up first. When those who worked a full day see that all are getting the same amount no matter how long they worked, jealousy, disappointment and indignation begin to surface.

the master could have avoided any problems by paying those who worked a full day first and they would be happily on their way. this would not have served the masters purpose which was to show the love and generosity god has for all of us.

the story is an indication of a problem that arose in Matthew’s community. the Jewish-Christians who risked it all from the beginning who were the first were now seeing newcomers to the faith being offered the same reward as they were. Jesus’ answer is simple, the kingdom is god’s and so can do with it as god chooses. god offers the same reward to all who come to belief, no matter at what stage.

In the early church there was sometimes a jealousy between those who had belief from the earliest days in the risen Christ and thus suffered persecution, and those who came to belief later on.

the message for us from this text is that god loves us all equally and we can all share in the riches offered. the Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger, abounding in love.

Do you sometimes experience jealousy and resentfulness? What causes this response and how does it make you feel?

Samaritan College primary campuses celebrated Book Week in Week 8, with parades and classroom displays that reflected this year’s theme – One World, Many Stories.

the parades were a true celebration of reading, with children and staff dressing up to reflect the theme, or as their favourite book or character. It was pleasing to see the high level of student participation as well as the thought and creativity in many of the costumes.

to further students understanding of the One World, Many Stories theme, classes have been learning about a specific country and following the parade, each class hosted visits from other classes. Classrooms were set up with interactive displays to highlight their country’s culture, including food, religion, dance, history and landmarks.

this celebration of reading and learning gave students many opportunities to learn from each other. Everyone (teachers and children alike) joined in with the country activities and displays and delighted in the chance to experience different cultures. great respect and appreciation was shown by all, highlighting that our students have a passion for learning and interacting with one another. the whole experience is a credit to the dedication of our students and staff.

For years 8 to 11 these are progress reports and as such teacher comments and / or indicators can be used as tools for improvement for the remainder of the semester. this is the final report Year 12s will receive and thus it is important to heed the advice given by their subject teachers in preparation for final assessments. parent teacher interviews will take place next Wednesday, September 28 from 4 to 8 pm. Interview booking sheets were included in last week's newsletter. parents are welcome to schedule alternative times with teachers if they are unable to attend.

As we start to experience warmer weather students are encouraged to wear their hats during recess, lunch or any outdoor activities. this 'choice' will become an expectation which will be enforced in term 4 and, therefore, it will be beneficial for students to check on the whereabouts and condition of their hat in the coming holidays.

rePorT From FrAnCe In The WYd PILGrImAGe:

We visited paris which is well known for its famous buildings and works of art, its chic fashion scene and its modern literary, artistic, and intellectual ideas. I have to say we don’t have words to describe what we experienced there as we visited the most amazing places of all the pilgrimage. We had the chance to visit the Eiffel tower, the Arc de triomphe, Museum du Louvre and to cruise paris in a short but substantial tour along the Seine River.

But the most remarkable places were the two magnificent cathedrals we visited. First was the Notre-Dame Cathedral, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and a masterpiece of French gothic architecture. And

second the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, commonly known as Sacré-Cœur Basilica, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. A popular landmark, the Basilica is located at the summit of the butte Montmartre, the highest point in the city.

After the few days we stayed in paris we visited Lourdes. I think that to be able to enjoy paris fully you need at least one week, however, we managed to visit so many places, that we cannot complain.

the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes is a place of mass pilgrimage from Europe and other parts of the world. the spring water from the grotto is believed by some to possess healing properties. We were able to witness the faith of many of these pilgrims, in a celebration in which the Rosary was prayed in something like 6 different languages. Again the time was too short, just one afternoon. It was not long enough to fully appreciate such a magnificent place, but it was a privilege to have the time that we did.
