The Board of Directors of the Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce, under the recommen-dation of the Executive Committee, voted unanimously to endorse the continuation of the Fire Tax and encourages the voters of the City of Cape Girardeau to vote yes on Tues-day, November 4, 2014. “The Board reviewed the proposal and emphat-ically supports the continuation of the Fire Tax,” stated John Mehner, President & CEO of the Cape Gi-rardeau Area Chamber of Commerce. “The revenue from this critical vote will continue to provide the neces-sary tools, equipment and facilities,” stated Mehner.

The Board also took the opportu-nity to discuss that public safety en-

St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny will be the keynote speak-er next month for the first annual Arrow Leadership and Success Summit, presented by Saint Francis Medical Center.

The summit will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17 and is part of the Arrow Leadership and Success Series, a 20-week series of interviews with leaders and individuals with success stories.

The summit is an opportunity for students and others to hear from a successful leader about what is takes to lead winning teams and organiza-tions.

“It is important to recognize those who have become leaders in their profession and communi-ties, especially those who attended Southeast Missouri State University,” said Steven C. Bjelich, president and chief executive officer of Saint Francis Medical Center. “They set an example for people of this region to achieve greater heights both personally and professionally. At Saint Francis Med-ical Center, we set an example of the highest standard of healthcare, and it is only fitting that the Medical Center and its professionals partner with the Arrow Leadership and Success Series.”

Mike Matheny is the 49th manag-er in the St. Louis Cardinals’ history. He recently finished his third regular season as manager, taking the team to the playoffs in each year. He led the Cardinals to the World Series in 2013, falling two games short of a 12th World Series title in Cardinals history.

Before be-coming a man-ager, he worked as a special assistant in player devel-opment for the Cardinals.

A Rawlings Gold Glove winning catcher four times, Matheny’s playing career spanned 13 years and four teams. He is most known by Cardinals fans

as the team’s catcher from 2000-2004. During this time he appeared in 611 games at the position and caught 4,938.1 innings. He made only 14 errors during the span.

Off the field, Matheny started the “Catch-22 Foundation.” The organi-zation funded the “Catch 22 Miracle Field” at Chesterfield Valley Athletic Complex. The field was designed to allow all children, including those with physical and mental disabilities,

the opportunity to play baseball. Mike and his wife, Kristin, reside

in St. Louis and have five children. “Every good organization needs

strong leadership,” said Lucas Pres-son, general manager of Arrow Digital. “It’s a vital component in what separates good teams and great ones. Mike Matheny has showed important leadership qualities as a player, youth sports champion, and now as the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals. This will be a wonderful night to hear his insight, which we believe will inspire students and the community.”

Tickets are on sale now at the Show Me Center box office, by phone at 573-651-5000 or online at Show-MeCenter.biz. General admission tick-ets are $10. A limited number of VIP tickets, which include meet-and-greet reception and photo with Matheny, are available to purchase for $99.

The summit is a one-hour event, which includes a keynote speech from Matheny and a 15-minute Q/A.

Individuals and businesses inter-ested in being a sponsor should con-tact Gera LeGrand at 573-388-2741 or [email protected].

On October 5, 2014, Lawless Harley-Davidson in Scott City hosted a special event for the #LetFreedom-Ride Special Delivery Tour. The tour took place over four days, stopping with a team of very special VIP’s who were on the route.

The delivery tour came into exis-tence when Calvin Corson of Waverly, Iowa, won a 2014 Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail Classic motorcycle for the winning photo in a Facebook photo contest sponsored by Orig-inal Bike Spirits, a Zep Inc. brand. Corson generously donated the motorcycle to Retrieving Freedom Inc., a nonprofit organization based out of Waverly, Iowa, and Senato-bia, Mississippi, that trains service dogs for veterans and children with autism. In a spirit of generosity, and to help raise awareness for Retrieving Freedom and its mission, Original Bike Spirits established #LetFreedom-Ride, a “Special Delivery Tour” that will traveled from Marietta, Georgia to Waterloo, Iowa, near one of the homes of Retrieving Freedom.

Over the course of the 875-mile route, people could check out the motorcycle and purchase a $20 raffle ticket from Retrieving Freedom for a chance to win. Original Bike Spirits was along for the ride, performing “random acts of badness,” like free bike cleanings and Original Bike Spirit product giveaways.

Each stop included VIP’s:• A veteran with a Retrieving

Freedom service dog so people could see the service dog in person

• Calvin Corson, winner of the 2014 Harley-Davidson Heritage Soft-ail Classic motorcycle

• Charles Dwyer and Scott Dewey, co-presidents of Retrieving Freedom

• Steve Nelson, Event Spokesper-son for Original Bike Spirits

• Larry Lowe, social media for Original Bike Spirits.

Gone Girl

Well, the movie was released and the hype and fanfare was even more than we could have expected. The re-views have been extremely good and the comments from those who spent time in Cape have been very positive. Those who were involved locally have great memories of the period of time for advanced location scouting and filming. Wow, what an experience.

John MehnerPresident& CEO

Mehner’s Meanderings

The economic benefits to the area have also been released. The 7 million plus dollars pumped into the local economy were real. Many businesses felt the positive effects of Gone Girl and many locals were able to make their big screen debuts. Again, I say what an experience.

Will we see continued benefits? I believe so. Just in the last week I have noticed people taking pictures outside The Bar and people taking pictures standing in the gazebo of the Courthouse. If the movie experiences the anticipated success, we are likely to see “movie tourists” for some time to come.

I would like to offer kudos to our Convention and Visitors Bureau for putting together the Gone Girl Driving Tour. Check it out online or pick up a brochure at the CVB or the Chamber office.

Can you say …..sequel?

A Look At Gone Girl

What an incredible ride we have had with Gone Girl.

• In March of 2013, the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau received a call from the Missouri Film Office, a part of the Missouri Division of Tourism alerting us that a yet to be identified major motion picture was looking to film in Missouri and was considering three possible locations: Hannibal, St. Lou-is, and Cape Girardeau.

• In April of 2013, the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau began working with locations scouts from Twentieth Century Fox, Rick Schuler and Steve Mapel.

• In May of 2013, we learned that Cape Girardeau had been selected as the Missouri film location for this still yet to be identified movie.

The Cardinal Newman Society recently released the list of schools recognized by the Catho-lic Education Honor Roll as2014 Schools of Ex-cellence. Since 2004 the Honor Roll has celebrated quality Catholic education throughout the Unit-ed States.http://www.cardinalnewmansociety.org/CatholicEDHonorRoll/2014PressKit.aspx

Honor Roll schools receiving this designation are marked by the inte-gration of Catholic identity through-out all aspects of their programs and excellence in academics. This year seventy-one schools received the honor of being named as a School of Excellence, and an additional nine received the distinction of Honorable Mention. This is less than five percent of the Catholic high schools in the United States.

“Since competition began in 2004, the Honor Roll has been a helpful tool for administrators, families and benefactors in recognizing the quality of a Catholic high school education,” said Patrick J. Reilly, President of The Cardinal Newman Society. “The Hon-or Roll schools are a reminder that Catholic education is getting better every day—not only academically, but in the renewal of Catholic identi-ty—and we are delighted to see the increased level of competition among the schools that participated in the program this year.”

This year’s Honor Roll schools are diverse: large and small, new and long-established, highly selective and those with open enrollment admissions policies, as well as a variety of tuition rates. The common trait is an institutional commitment to providing a truly integrated and

gliorino, O.S.F. stated, “He is most grateful for this distinction; it shows the dedication of the staff, the determination of the students and the support of the parents and alumni of Notre

Dame Regional High School.” Notre Dame has been a “Top 50 School” since 2005 and is humbled by being elevated to a “School of Excellence”, one of the “Top 5% in the Nation”.

Indicators of a School of Excel-lence

All members of the Catholic Edu-cation Honor Roll embrace, support, and pledge to work toward achieving the following “Indicators of a School of Excellence.”

1) Institutional Commitment: The school demonstrates to its faculty, administration, and community in its mission, policies, teaching, actions, and associations a commitment to Catholic ideals, attitudes, principles, and teaching in fidelity to the ex-traordinary and ordinary Magisteri-um of the Catholic Church.

2) Mission-Centered Individuals: When recruited, selected, retained,

Cooler temperatures are here and that means fall, football, and flu. We aren’t happy to see the arrival of one of those! There is something you can do though to stop the spread of the seasonal flu: get your annual flu shot. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, flu activity most commonly peaks in the U.S. in January or February. However, sea-sonal flu activity can begin as early as October and continue to occur as late as May. Broadway Prescription Shop pharmacist and owner, Kevin Wood, PharmD, says that is why the time to get vaccinated is now. “It takes about two weeks after vaccination for the body to build up protection against the influenza virus infection,” said Wood. “That’s why it’s better to get vaccinated before the flu season

Flu Vaccination Available at Broadway Prescriptionreally gets under way.”

The seasonal flu vaccine is avail-able at Broadway Prescription Shop to help you fight the flu. Broadway’s pharmacists can administer the vac-cine in their private wellness room. You do not need an appointment or a prescription, and the vaccine is often covered by insurance and Medicare, and is always covered under Med-icaid. This year’s flu shot will offer protection against H1N1 flu virus, in addition to two other influenza viruses that are expected to circulate this season. Influenza is a respirato-ry infection that can cause serious complications, particularly to young children and older adults. The CDC recommends the vaccine for those 6 months of age and older.

“Getting the vaccine doesn’t just

protect you,” said Wood. “It also protects your children, your parents or grandparents, your pregnant co-worker… it’s important to consider the health of those around you that might be more susceptible to the harmful effects of the flu.”

You can stop by Broadway Pre-scription Shop any time from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday or 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday to get your shot. Broadway will also hold a clinic at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center on Thursday, September 25 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. and at the Jackson Senior Center on Friday, September 26 from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. Workplace clinics are also available. Old Town Cape is excited to announce their winner for the 2014 River Tales Classic Car show held in downtown Cape Girardeau, Sunday, September 14.

Of the 206 registered vehicles, Old Town Cape’s guest judge, Kevin Schaper from Withers Radio Group, decided on Chris Glisson’s beautiful 1977 Ford Mustang II Cobra. Re-movable t-tops afforded an up close view of the polished red interior. Red racing stripes complemented the beautiful white exterior. From Carterville, Il, this mustang has been pampered by the Glisson family since it rolled off the line.

‘This vehicle caught my eye,’ com-mented Shaper. ‘I remember cruising down Broadway in the mid-70’s and this is what you would see rolling down the street. It embodies what Old Town Cape is all about, preserv-ing and revitalizing history.’

In the 37th year for the event,

the River City Rodders Car Club, along with the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau and Old Town Cape, have fine-tuned what it takes to carry out a successful show. Oldies music broadcast by Hot Rod Nights and tantalizing aromas from a BBQ stand mingled in the air with the tangy scent of rubber and exhaust. Stories were swapped under the hoods of classic vessels as the sun heated up the pavement. Years of history and thousands of hours of blood, sweat and tears sat in Downtown Cape Girardeau, waiting for their stories to be heard.

‘This car show is part of Cape Gi-rardeau’s culture, and we’re honored to be a part of it,’ commented Marla Mills, Executive Director of Old Town Cape. ‘It seems only fitting that his-torical cars be on display and judged in one of Cape Girardeau’s most historic neighborhoods - Downtown Cape.’

Sponsors for this year’s show include: Auto Tire & Parts NAPA, EVtv Motor Werks and SoutheastHEALTH.

In today’s competitive environ-ment, it is critical to have a viable work force that will attract and retain business in the area. Ready. Set. GROW! is Missouri’s answer to devel-oping a work force that is prepared to meet business needs in the 21st Century. Leaders throughout Cape Girardeau County have recognized the importance of this initiative and have engaged a coalition of educa-tors, businesses, and organizations to become a “Certified Work Ready Community.” A Work Ready Com-munity is designed to build the best possible workforce through job train-ing in core skills that are essential to business success.

Cape Girardeau County is in the process of ensuring that a quali-fying number of individuals in our workforce have obtained a National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC). The NCRC is based on ACT’s nation-ally accredited WorkKeys® system and measures core skills in applied mathematics, reading for information and locating information. These are all critically important skills in the majority of jobs in today’s workplace.

Becoming a certified Work Ready community will help area businesses hire the best people and will indicate to prospective businesses that Cape Girardeau County has a talented work force that is ready to meet their needs. Missouri companies who have utilized the NCRC have report-ed more efficient hiring practices by finding the right person the first time. Additionally, Cape Girardeau County and businesses supporting the initiative will gain exposure on ACT’s national website, as was well as on Missouri’s website at http://ded.mo.gov/getcertified. The assessment

is accepted throughout the nation by employers and is being used in 44 states.

Cape Girardeau County will achieve “Certified Work Ready” status when it reaches the bench-mark goals established by ACT, based on population and labor force data. These benchmarks include the num-ber of people obtaining certification and the number of businesses show-ing support for the initiative. We are at 76% of our goal and YOU can help us achieve this certification.

Supporting a stronger, better prepared workforce is easy. All the employer needs to do is to recognize

the NCRC when applicants present one, and/or recommend it as another tool during the hiring process. There is no obligation for businesses to hire the individual, and the certificate is not a substitute for meeting other job requirements. Please join us in our efforts to achieve certification for Cape Girardeau County by signing up your company or organization at http://www.workreadycommunities.org/business/form or by contacting Marsha Haskell at [email protected] who will register your support on your behalf. Thanks for your support!

• We could not pay for the enor-mous amount of publicity and press that Cape Girardeau has received in conjunction with this movie.

When a movie is filmed in a com-munity there is a dual benefit. On the front end, Gone Girl brought mil-lions of dollars of positive economic impact to Cape Girardeau’s local economy. On the back end, the Con-vention and Visitors Bureau hopes to further grow that positive economic impact by offering a driving tour that will direct guests to the numerous sites of Gone Girl’s fictional commu-nity of North Carthage. Sites that were filmed and can be experienced Only in Cape Girardeau! We hope to ride this wave just as long as we possibly can, certainly through the Oscars and the movie’s release on DVD when it will again reach a whole new audience!

Old Town Cape is excited to announce that this year’s Christmas ornament is officially available in downtown retailers. Featured in this year’s design are downtown filming highlights from the recent shoot of ‘Gone Girl’.

“Cast, crew and spectators from around the area turned Cape Gi-rardeau into tinsel town,” comment-ed Marla Mills, Executive Director of Old Town Cape. “It was a lot of fun watching the movie progress through our streets, especially in our down-town district. How their designers transformed the courthouse lawn into a winter scene was amazing. And the late-night filmings of press con-ferences at the courthouse gazebo were mezmerizing. Highlighting these downtown venues seemed the most appropriate feature to commemorate our moments of fame.”

Directed by David Fincher, Gone Girl is a suspenseful thriller set in the Missouri river town of North Car-thage, Mo., aka Cape Girardeau. The crux of the plot circles around the question of whether or not co-star Nick Dunne, fantastically portrayed by Ben Afleck, killed his wife Amy, the ever-so-lovely Rosamund Pike. Other stars like Tyler Perry and Neil Patrick Harris help carry out the story, and are featured in scenes filmed in our own backyard.

The 2014 ornament is a limited edition, numbered piece produced by Hestia and is the eighteenth in a series. Businesses selling the keep-sake include: Bob’s Shoe Service, C.P. McGinty Jewelers, Cape Girardeau Convention & Visitors Bureau, Hut-son’s Fine Furniture, Jayson Jewelers, Knaup Floral, Pastimes Antiques, Philanthropy, Renaissance, Zickfield’s Jewelers and Old Town Cape.

Previous year’s ornaments avail-able for sale include: The Oliver-Lem-

Gone Girl Ornaments Are Officially For Saleing House, Mississippi Riverboat, Hutson’s Christmas Window, Schultz School, The Glenn House, The River Campus, Port Cape Girardeau, The Red House, The Marquette Hotel, Old Lorimier School, Old St. Vincent’s Church and a Millenium depiction (fireworks over Old Town Cape). Ornaments that are no longer avail-

able for sale include: the Clock and Courthouse, Academic Hall, the Old Mississippi River Bridge, the Emerson Bridge and the Southeast Missourian Building.

Lawless Harley-Davidson in Scott City, MO will be hosting a Ladies Only Garage Party Thursday, October 16 from 7-9pm. The event is designed to be a no-pressure introduction to the basics of owning and riding a Harley motorcycle, and is intended to boost women’s confidence by addressing key concerns women have about riding, letting them handle and get comfortable with bikes, introduc-ing them to other women interested in riding and providing plenty of chances to ask questions. In addi-tion, this Garage Party will be part of the Lawless’ Pink Up Cape commit-ment and will feature a silent auc-tion to raise funds for breast cancer research.

According to Michelle Long, Mar-keting Coordinator for Lawless Har-ley-Davidson, “There are nearly 4.5 million women in the United Sates who say they dream of owning a Har-ley-Davidson motorcycle, but haven’t taken that crucial step of walking into a dealership. It is our hope that this event will be a welcoming, fun and informative event that will help bridge that gap for women in our community.”

She adds, “Research tells us women are getting into motorcycling faster than men these days. Female

ridership has jumped 60% in the past five years- and 14% of new Har-ley-Davidson motorcycle buyers are women. Women are often intimidat-ed by Harley-Davidson dealers. They feel they won’t be taken seriously.”

The event will involve various stations set up in the dealership for the attendees to visit and learn about choosing the right motorcycle for them, proper attire for safely riding, general motorcycle safety, and also give the women a chance to expe-rience a ride on the Jumpstart unit. There will be guest speakers, refresh-ments, and door prizes, as well as vendor booths for the attendees to visit.

The dealership is located at 2100 East Outer Road in Scott City, MO. To participate in this event, please RSVP by calling (573) 334-7716, or by emailing Michelle at [email protected].

On November 10, 1989, Louis and Barbara Hagler purchased a Mail Boxes Etc. franchise. In an effort to get the store opened at 209 S. Broadview in Cape Girardeau (before construc-tion on the strip center was com-plete), we opened in a trailer in the parking lot outside of Storey’s Food Giant and American Super Store, which is now Trees and Trends. In 2001, UPS bought out Mail Boxes Etc and changed the name to The UPS Store. In March of 2001, we also relocated the store to its current location in the Town Plaza at 2128 William St, Cape Girardeau.

We have seen many technologi-cal changes during the last 25 years. Our store started by being a shipping, copying, and faxing store and now it is a shipping, copying, and faxing store as well as a full service printing store. We print flyers, banners, posters, mailings, and more. We are your one-

stop business services and printing store.

We are celebrating our 25th anni-versary in business and welcome all to stop by the store and take advantage of amazing prices on all our printing during our celebration November 10-30, 2014.

We would also like to say THANK YOU to all our customers past, pres-ent, and future. We look forward to meeting and exceeding all your ship-ping and printing needs (most print jobs are completed within 24 hours).

Rebecca Ward, principal and owner of Ward Architecture, LLC was recently awarded 2014 the Richard L. Blinder Award Architecture Fellowship by the New York City based James Marston Fitch Charitable Foundation. This bi-annual honor is only granted to two architects/architectural firms in the country.

Since 1989 the James Marston Fitch Charitable Foundation has been in the vanguard of historic preserva-tion practice and theory. Its mission is to support professionals in the field of historic preservation. They achieve this by providing mid-career grants to professional architects working in preservation, landscape architecture, urban design, environmental planning, decorative arts, architectural design and architectural history.

Local Architect Earns Top Honor Nationally

In 2006, the Foundation estab-lished the Richard Blinder Award in honor of the former Fitch chair, archi-tect, and founding partner of Beyer Blinder Belle. The award is presented biannually to an architect supporting of his/her proposal that explores the preservation of an existing structure, complex of buildings or genre of

building type through addition, renovation or other means.

Ms. Ward will conduct a site assessment for the long vacant Broad-way Theater, a historic vaudeville theater that opened in 1921 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Following the completion of a site assessment, she will engage the local

community in their vision for the fu-ture of the theater and create a major catalytic impact on the upper Broad-way Street revitalization.
