AAALLLLLL LEARNING STARTS WITH A STUDENT’S ABILITY TO READ. Family Reading Night

is the perfect opportunity to have fun while investing some quality time in your children and in their education here at Community Outreach Academy. Our Family Reading Night focused on reading with lots of fun reading related activities. Students were able to listen to stories, make bookmarks, win some books, and shop at our Scholastic Book Fair that was open all week long.

Motivating children to read is one of those agony-ecstasy tasks every parent and teacher faces sooner or later. When the desire to read is planted, nurtured, and grows — ecstasy; but when an

appreciation of reading fails to take root—agony… for the parent, teacher, and child. Children will learn reading skills in school, but often they come to associate reading with work, not pleasure. As a result, they lose their desire to read. And it is that desire—the curiosity and interest—that is the cornerstone to using reading and related skills successfully. By far the most effective way to encourage your children to love books and reading is to read aloud to them, and the earlier you start, the better. Even a baby of a few months can see pictures, listen to your voice, and turn cardboard pages. Don't stop taking the time to read aloud once your children have learned to read for themselves. At this stage, encourage them to read to you some of the time. This shared enjoyment will continue to strengthen your children's interest and appreciation. Studies show what common sense tells us: the more kids read, the better they read and the more pleasure they get out of reading. Unfortunately, the reverse also holds true: children who read very little usually have poor reading skills. Reading is a struggle for them, and they avoid it whenever possible. The following are just a few suggestions to motivate student into reading.

► Scout for things your children might like to read. Use their interests and hobbies as starting points.

► Leave all sorts of reading materials including books, magazines, and colorful catalogs such as “Kid’s National Geographic” in conspicuous places around your home.

► Present reading as an activity with a purpose—a way to gather useful information for, say, making paper airplanes, identifying a doll or stamp in your child's collection, reading a recipe while helping in the kitchen, or planning a family trip.

► Encourage older children to read to their younger brothers and sisters. Older children enjoy showing off their skills to an admiring audience.

► Set aside a regular time for reading in your family, independent of schoolwork—the 20 minutes before lights out, just after dinner, or whatever fits into your household schedule. As little as 10 minutes of free reading a day can help improve your child's skills and habits.

► Limit your children's computer/television using in an effort to make time for other activities, such as reading. But never use computer/TV as a reward for reading, or a punishment for not reading.

► If your child is techno savvy, download the following apps that have interactive reading programs; Storybots, Reading rainbow, Starfall, Bookboard, Me books.

Вечер Чтения для всей семьи — это прекрасная возможность не только хорошо провести время, но и инвестировать некоторое время в образование своих детей в школе Commu-nity Outreach Academy. Прошедший в нашей школе Вечер Чтения фокусировался на чтении книг, а также на веселых играх, связанных с чтением. Студенты имели возможность слушать интересные истории, делать заметки, выигрывать или покупать книги на книжной ярмарке от организации Scholastic; книжка ярмарка была открыта всю неделю.

Мотивирование детей к чтению - это одна из самых тяжелых/мучительных и, в то же время, приятных/восторженных задач, с которой рано или поздно сталкиваются все

родители и учителя. Когда заложенное в ребенка желание читать постоянно возрастает — мы все в восторге; но когда в ребенке не зарождается желание к чтению — наступает своего рода «агония»… для учителей, родителей и для самого ребенка. Дети будут приобретать навыки к чтению в школе, но очень часто чтение у ребенка ассоциируется с работой, а не удовольствием. В результате таких представлений, дети теряют желание к чтению. Но если в ребенка заложен интерес и любопытство к чтению — это станет основанием/краеугольным камнем для успешного процесса обучения в целом. До сих, наиболее эффективным способом поощрения детей и привития им любви к чтению является метод, когда мы читаем для них вслух, и чем раньшем мы начнем использовать этот метод—тем более успешыми будут наши дети в учебе. Даже младенец, которому всего лишь несколько месяцев, обладает способностью видеть картинки, слушать наш голос, и переворачивать твердые книжные страницы. И даже если Ваш ребенок научился читать самостоятельно, обязательно найдите время и продолжайте читать для него вслух. В этот период, поощряйте также ребенка читать вслух и для Вас. Такое взаимное удовольствие от чтения будет постоянно увеличивать желание и интерес к чтению у Вашего ребенка. Научные исследования подтверждают то, что подсказывает нам здравый смысл: чем больше дети читают, тем лучше они читают и тем больше удовольствия они получают от чтения. К сожалению, обратная истина также имеет место: дети, которые читают очень мало — обычно обладают очень слабыми способностями к чтению. Из-за неспособности читать они страдают и стараются избегать чтения, когда это только возможно. Ниже приводятся некоторые советы, которые помогут Вам мотивировать ребенка к чтению.

► Найдите книги, которые понравится читать Вашим детям. Учитывайте при этом интересы детей.

► Разместите в Вашем доме, на видном месте, различного рода материалы для чтения — книги, журналы и цветные каталоги, такие как “Kid’s National Geographic”.

► Используйте чтение целенаправленно, как способ найти полезную информацию — для того, чтобы собрать, например, бумажный самолетик, или найти названии куклы или марки из коллекции ребенка; прочитайте вместе с ребенком рецепт, когда он(она) помогает Вам на кухне; читайте, когда готовитесь к совместному/семейному путешествию, и т.д.

► Поощряйте Ваших старших детей читать для их младших сестер и братьев. Старшим детям очень нравится демострировать свои способности перед восторженной публикой.

► Установите в Вашей семье регулярное время для чтения (отдельное от времени выполнения ребенком школьных уроков) — 20 минут перед сном, сразу после ужина, или в наиболее удобное для Вашего семейного распорядка время. Всего лишь 10 минут свободного чтения каждый день — может существенно повысить способности к чтению у Вашего ребенка.

► Ограничьте для ребенка пользование компьютером или телевизором — с целью использования этого времени для более полезных занятий, таких как чтение. При этом, никогда не используйте компьютер или телевизор как награду за чтение, или же как наказание за то, что ребенок не читает.

► Если Ваш ребенок хорошо владеет компьютером, загрузите следующие компьютерные приложения, которые включают в себя интерактивные программы для чтения: Storybots, Reading rainbow, Starfall, Bookboard, Me books.
