MELODIC ME!HOW TO PLAY

• If using laminated cards and whiteboard/dry erase markers, give one to each student. If using small tokens to represent sharps/flats/naturals lay these out between the students and make sure everyone is clear on which is which, for example:

• Paperclip=natural• Eraser=flat• Post-it flag=sharp

• On "go!" players draw 1 card each from the deck and place it face-up in front of them. • They then turn the scale on the card into a melodic scale by adding sharps/flats/naturals (using a whiteboard marker or small tokens).• When a player has 4 cards ready they shout "Melodic boom!"• If all their cards are correct they are the winner. If they are incorrect game play resumes until another player shouts "Melodic boom!"

LEARNING OBJECTIVEStudents need to think carefully about the key signatures and accidentals in this game to correctly turn them into melodic scales. It's not enough to know how to play each scale, they must be able to visualise it and thoroughly under-stand the construction to be successful.

HOW TO ASSEMBLE• Print out the game cards (pages 3–8) double-sided. • Trim along the dotted lines and laminate if desired.• You will also need either whiteboard markers or suitable small tokens to represent sharps, flats and naturals such as erasers, page tags, post-its, paperclips, pegs etc.
