Dear WASC Visiting Team Members,

On behalf of the students, faculty and staff at Concordia University, I welcome you to our beautiful campus in Irvine. I believe you will find everyone you meet here at Concordia friendly and willing to help answer all of your questions. We appreciate very much your willingness to volunteer many hours of your time to review our documents and to provide candid assessments of our current status and of our plans for the future. We whole-heartedly endorse the concept of peer review and acknowledge the significant benefits gained through the self-study process and the self-improvement provided through the accreditation process.

Blessings on your important work!

Kurt KruegerPresident

leTTer FroM The PreSideNT

Hello, my name is Jamie Rivera and I am this academic year’s Associated Students of Concordia University Irvine’s (ASCUI) President. It is my honor to take part in welcoming you to Concordia University Irvine.

I feel very blessed to have this opportunity to serve the student body and give back to the university that built and strengthened my character. My time here at Concordia has helped me mature and develop a skill set that I would not have obtained elsewhere. I’ve had the opportunity to develop leadership skills through my service on ASCUI as a Senator my sophomore year, and as an ASCUI Executive Board Officer both my junior and senior years. Additionally, I’ve strengthened my professionalism though volunteering as a Peer Advising Leader (PAL), which is a position that I held my sophomore year at the office of First Year Experience (FYE). I’ve served abroad on a university led mission trip to Ghana, which strengthened my faith. Further, I’ve enriched my academic experience through a study abroad term this past May in Scotland, which was led by one of Concordia’s history professors.

My involvement at Concordia thus far has truly impacted my life in a positive manner, and I am excited for you to hear other student’s stories

leTTer FroM The ASCui PreSideNT

that are unique to their individual journey. Please enjoy your time here; it is my hope that your observations and conversations with students will help you understand why I fell in love with this university.

Blessings,

Jamie Rivera ‘14

#AskWASCAlthough WASC affects 100% of a campus, only about 10% of a campus population actually knows what it is. Concordia University Irvine decided to change all that with a Social Media Marketing campaign directed to all students and Staff and Faculty. Using the hashtag #AskWASC, social media was used to engage the campus in polls, quizzes, pictures, questions and prizes. We invite you to see all the conversations, suggestions and interactions CUI has had with students. Visit Storify.com/ConcordiaIrvine/askWASC.

Core CurriculumConcordia is among a distinctive group of universities that offer a common, coherent core curriculum for all of its students. Rather than asking you to cobble together a meaningful general education experience from a vast array of disconnected distribution courses, Concordia’s Core is carefully crafted so that you discover the purpose of a liberal arts education - to grow intellectually, ethically, and spiritually. Through the Core, all Concordia students engage in a shared academic experience that provides a foundation for further learning and for life. Concordia’s Core is comprised of classic liberal arts courses offered in small, innovative learning communities. Core courses are taken together in linked pairs: biology with theology, mathematics with philosophy, and history with literature. The transfer Core has its own unique pair: philosophy with theology. Core classes typically have just 25 students, giving you a close-knit learning community.

Around-the-World Semester5 courses, 10 countries, 2 professors, 4 grad assistants, 27 students, 25 digital texts, 100 pages of writing, 90 hours of flying and 175 hours of instruction in Morocco, Brazil, South Africa, Russia, Turkey, Armenia, Nepal, India, Cambodia and China. Students travel the globe with fellow students and professors for one semester, while taking classes and living out the Gospel in community and service. And to top it off, they earn a minor in Global Cultural Studies in the process.

This #AskWASC contestant won uthe president’s parking spot.

Page 16: Concordia University Irvine - WASC Resource Guide

Living Learning Communities Concordia University Irvine Residential Education and Services believes that the learning environment extends beyond the traditional lecture hall and laboratory and into the informal learning spaces of the residence halls, recreation areas and gathering places. Living Learning Communities are small defined groups of students who come together with faculty and student affairs professionals to engage in a holistic and intellectually interactive learning experience.

CUI Bono provides a Living Learning Community for students who are interested in getting the most out of their academic experience.Global Village is designed to provide a cross-cultural experience for students who are interested in broadening their understanding of world issues and cultures while living on campus.Holos House is an intentional community that focuses on living a healthy lifestyle.WINGS is designed to provide students with the support needed to make a successful transition from high school to college.

President’s Academic ShowcaseConcordia’s President’s Academic Showcase of Undergraduate Research encourages graduate-level work by undergraduates in a cash-award competition. Students can work one-on-one with a faculty mentor on a topic that interests them and present their research to Concordia’s academic community for a chance to win up to $1,000.

ASCUI: The Concordia University Irvine Board of Regents and the faculty are committed to including students within the policy-making functions of the University. ASCUI Senate is the primary voice of students in policy-making activities. The Senate is comprised of elected representatives from residence halls and commuter students, and functions under the leadership of the Student Body Vice-President. The Senate also provides a communication link between students and student leadership.

LEAD: The Leadership, Education, and Development (LEAD) Program focuses on the social integration of our students within the Concordia community. LEAD recognizes the value of student involvement on campus and its impact on a student’s overall college experience. Housed in the Center for Student Leadership & Development (CSLD), the LEAD Program plans and offers enriching experiences for the student body to participate in either on-campus or around the Orange County community. Students in turn will foster relationships with each

other, invest in the University, and strengthen their awareness of themselves.

ABBEYWEST is a movement of students on the campus of Concordia University Irvine who want to shed worn-out perceptions of what Christianity is all about. Returning again to the teachings of Jesus, our mission is quite simply to make disciples of a new generation.

PALs: The Peer Advising Leadership Program is a unique ministry on campus as it embodies a Christ-like servant leadership philosophy. The PALs’ primary motivation is a deep desire to help others through volunteering their service to the University and contributing positively to the new students’ transition to Concordia. PALs invest their efforts on meeting the needs of their students and work at creating a sense of belonging for them, thereby enhancing the PALs’ Concordia experiences and growth as leaders.

RAs: Provide a living community conducive to learning and fellowship, engaging residents in programming while maintaining safety and university policies throughout the community.
