“ To advance localization, a true sense of unity is important. ‘Kenkijin Spirit,’ which

is our standard of values and our shared code of conduct among all Hitachi

Construction Machinery employees, is fundamental to that unity. All over the

world, we are conducting the training needed to establish this sense of unity and

value. Kenkijin Spirit is soaking in all over the world and becoming localized,

AS THE LARGEST CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT SHOW in the Western Hemisphere, CONEXPO/CON-AGG drew more than 2,400 exhibitors and nearly 130,000 attendees ranging from contractors, dealers and distributors to service providers, producers, engineers and more to Las Vegas March 4-8.

Thousands of attendees stopped by the Hitachi booth and discovered “The Power of Focus.” By leveraging our excavator expertise and legacy of meeting demanding mining applications, Hitachi’s focused line of products delivers an unmatched experience of reliability, durability and effciency – that’s The Power of Focus.

Built to tackle the toughest jobs, our durable excavators showcased Hitachi’s attention to detail and productive design through roomier cabs with increased visibility, serviceability and accessibility updates.

“As a longtime Hitachi customer, I was impressed with the equipment that was showcased,” said John T. Baldwin Jr., operations manager at Reliable Contracting. “Hitachi makes powerful and reliable excavators, and the orange defnitely stood out against all the yellow equipment.”

Hitachi’s new EH1100-5 dominated as one of the largest trucks displayed at CONEXPO/CON-AGG this year. Incidentally, it is the smallest of Hitachi’s line of rigid-frame haulers, known for their advanced technology, reliability and low operating costs. Ideally suited for large construction sites and small to midsize quarry and mining operations, the EH1100-5 is manufactured by Guelph, Ontario-based Hitachi Construction Truck Manufacturing, which recently underwent a $32-million plant expansion.

“We have three main upgrades to the EH1100-5, which has been updated from a previous model,” said Brian Mace, product marketing manager for Hitachi Mining Division. “We now offer a Cummins® engine exclusively for U.S. and Canadian customers, and offer both Cummins® and MTU engine options for

customers outside this area. We also upgraded the transmission, complete with new Shift Energy Management and Optimum Shift Range software, and have integrated the parking brake within the rear wet disc brake.”

Other highlights of the truck include an improved access system, enhanced cab features like a 25-centimeter (10-inch) LCD screen that doubles as a rearview camera, and an upgraded capacity to 70 nominal tons (previously 65 tons).

On Wednesday, March 5, Hitachi dealers and customers took a break from the show foor to dig in and refuel at Hitachi’s exclusive Power Lunch. Craig Lamarque, division manager for Hitachi Construction and Mining; Dan Fitzpatrick, director of sales for the Hitachi Division; and

Mitsuhiro Tabei, vice president, executive offcer and director of Hitachi Construction Machinery and president of the Global Mining Division; welcomed and thanked attendees.

“We appreciate your loyalty to Hitachi,” Lamarque said. “Hitachi will continue working to exceed your equipment expectations by providing you with durable, effcient and reliable machines.”

After fve days and 218 322 square meters (2.35 million square feet) of equipment and exhibitors, CONEXPO/CON-AGG wrapped up, but planning for the next show has already begun. We’ll see you in 2017! ■

Through a joint venture, Hitachi

Construction Machinery (HCM) and

John Deere have established Deere-

Hitachi Màquinas de Construção do

Brasil S.A., a brand-new 200 000-

square-meter (2,152,782-square-foot)

manufacturing site in Indaiatuba, São

Paulo, Brazil. Key Hitachi and John

Deere executives, government offcials

from Brazil and more than 700 guests,

including dealers and customers,

attended the plant’s opening ceremony

held February 11, 2014.

“The opening represents great

advancements for our operations in

Brazil,” said Michijiro Kikawa, chairman

of the board, HCM. “John Deere and

Hitachi have a solid partnership, placing

us at the forefront of the hydraulic

excavator market.”

Five Hitachi excavator models – ZX160,

ZX180, ZX210, ZX250 and ZX350

– along with their comparable John

Deere medium-size excavators are being

manufactured at the facility, which has

a production capacity of approximately

2,000 units per year. All Hitachi models

come standard with Hitachi’s ZXLink™

machine monitoring system.

This new facility serves as a dynamic

joint venture, with HCM contributing

the world’s leading technologies for

hydraulic excavators and John Deere

marketing the manufactured machines.

The facility’s location is important

as Brazil serves as one of the fastest

growing construction equipment

markets in the world.

This facility is just one example of

Hitachi’s signifcant investments in

manufacturing plants to boost future

production capacity and effciency. The

Ledon learned frsthand on the jobsite

about the durability and reliability of

Hitachi machines.

“Hitachi was not the frst excavator we

bought – we started with a different

brand,” Ledon said. “We switched to

Hitachi after working on a deep sewer

line with hard material. I needed two

machines and put a Hitachi and the

other brand to work. The Hitachi was

the only one that could do the job. From

that point on, we’ve gone with Hitachi.

They’re easy to run. I like the design,

and they’re safe machines.”

And safety is top priority at Bravo

Underground, which has been a driving

force for industry safety standards within

the Las Vegas region and the state.

“When it comes to safety, we’re second

to none,” Ledon said. “There’s no budget

for saving lives.”

Tom Hollis, Bravo Underground’s safety

director and risk management admin-

istrator of 11 years, conducts training

sessions such as OSHA 10- and 30-hour

construction training and competent

person training, confned spaces training,

defensive driving, and frst-aid/CPR

training for all the company’s employees

as well as every vendor on its jobsites.

Almost all of these training sessions take

place at Blaine Equipment.

12 | HitachiConstruction.com

Ledon has been the hammer

for 19 years as president and CEO of

Bravo Underground Inc., a Henderson,

Nevada-based company he started that

specializes in underground, wet and dry

utilities; concrete; paving; and grading.

Originally from Cuba, Ledon was frst

introduced to the construction industry

through his father’s work as an electrical

contractor, and he credits his dealer, Blaine

Equipment Company Inc., as being a big

part of Bravo Underground’s success.

“I started this company with one

backhoe from Dayton Blaine at Blaine

Equipment,” Ledon said. “Dayton has

supported this company from day one.

He runs his company so that service

comes frst. Downtime costs you money,

and Blaine Equipment makes sure the

contractor is never down.”

“ WHEN IT COMES TO SAFETY,

WE’RE SECOND TO NONE. THERE’S NO BUDGET

FOR SAVING LIVES.”

JOSE M. LEDON WAS GIVEN ADVICE FROM HIS FATHER

THAT HAS ALWAYS STUCK WITH HIM:

JOSE M. LEDON,

PRESIDENT AND CEO

OF BRAVO UNDERGROUND

“ THE NAIL HOLDS EVERYTHING TOGETHER, BUT THE HAMMER PUTS THE NAIL IN.

I ALWAYS WANT YOU TO BE THE HAMMER.”

Bravo’s ZX380LC-3 showcases its durability by hammering away basalt for a residential development.

Page 13: CONEXPO/CON-AGG 2014 - Home | Hitachi · 2015-11-16 · feet) of equipment and exhibitors, CONEXPO/CON-AGG wrapped up, but planning for the next show has already begun. We’ll see

Bravo Underground’s safety program is

built on collaboration and alliances with

organizations such as the National Utility

Contractors Association (NUCA), the

Association of General Contractors

(AGC), Nevada OSHA and the Region

IX OSHA offce and the Las Vegas

Metropolitan Police Department

(LVMPD), to name a few.

“If you don’t have support from owner-

ship, your safety program is worthless,”

Hollis said. “We’ve blazed a trail and

initiated many safety programs, but that’s

only been possible with Jose’s support

and by working closely with other

organizations.”

For example, Bravo Underground

partnered with the LVMPD to establish

a traffc safety plan to cut down on

speeding in construction zones. The

company also initiated the frst operator

accountability program through the

AGC in 2006. It’s a tracking system that

provides accident records of operators

throughout the valley. But Bravo takes

safety a step further by also feld-testing

operators before hiring them.

“The frst thing we check when feld-

testing operators is not their production

or capabilities; safety comes frst,”

Hollis said. “Are they putting their seat

belt on? Are they checking the horn and

the lights before they even start to grab

the controls?”

Second Issue 2014 BREAKOUT

For its safe excavation record and work

with locators, Bravo Underground is the

only company in the state to earn three

Silver Shovel Awards (in 2005, 2008

and 2013) from the Nevada Regional

Common Ground Alliance (NRCGA) and

the Southern Nevada Utility Committee

(SNUC). But it’s Ledon’s tenacity and

passion, not awards, that continue to

drive him each day.

“You have to love what you do, or you’ll

never be good at it,” he said. “After I got

into the underground business, I never

‘worked’ another day in my life. It’s

tough, but it’s been a lot of fun. I get up

in the morning and think, ‘What’s the

challenge today?’” ■

HITACHI PARTS SUPPORT

here’s enough stress in

day-to-day operations

without worrying

about unpredictable

machine repairs. That’s

why Hitachi dealers and a comprehensive

parts distribution network support you to

make sure you get what you need, when

you need it.

Depots stock parts to provide support for

the products in their geographic areas and

offer same-day shipment of emergency

parts. All depots and our primary parts

distribution center in Milan, Ill., are

connected by an online

inventory system, giving

you a superior level of

product support.

Hitachi also operates a state-of -the-art

reman facility in North America that

provides high-quality, cost-effective

solutions for your machine-maintenance

needs. Remanufactured components can

extend the productive and economic lives

of equipment, avoiding the cost of new

replacements or downtime from rebuilds.
