The Netherlands

We need an intelligent way to integrate all the information and make decisions. We need to take actions quickly.

The Integrated Geospatial Information framework aims to assist countries towards integrated and better digital services for citizens

Geospatial is considered being a new general purpose technology which is really interesting because essentially geospatial is equivalent to electricity and water

World is very responsive, resilient and constantly changing. The challenges we are facing needs geospa-tial technology to build an intelligent infrastructure.

Technology and innovation offer opportunities for smarter communication and I see a growing awareness regarding the shared message and impact of geo-information.

Geospatial is at heart of our society

GIS is an intelligent nervous system.

The focus is improved and informed decision making, contributing to digital transformation.

Building Infrastructure for New IndiaThis panel focused on a ‘System of Systems’ approach, enabled by converging technologies along with a robust policy framework for the construction and infrastructure sector. It brought together various technology and platform providers, the geospatial industry and decision makers to understand the potential of converging technologies and how they will empower construction and infrastructure transformations. With India focusing on infrastructure projects like Bharatmala, Sagarmala, Inland Waterways, building new airports, ports and Special Economic Zones, the focus was on sharing the vision on a New India and its infrastructure priorities.

Pravir Pandey , Vice Chairman of Inland Waterway Authority of India, Director of Jal Marg Vikas Project

“There has been a quantum jump from 5 to 111 National Waterways by Inland Waterways of India in a matter of 4.5 years; and we are looking forward to build-ing multi-modal logistics park with emerging digital technologies to address last mile connectivity through waterways”

Ramakrishnan Ramamurthy, Principal Associate of GMR Group

“For challenging projects where conventional methods cannot not be used like high dense forest mapping to develop highway corridors in Mizoram, LiDAR technologies is utilized extensively to collect data in a short period. It is cost effective, highly precise and the visits to site location to recheck can be reduced drastically”

Hitesh Khanna, Advisor (Survey) of NHSRCL

“I am a great admirer of geospatial technology. Geospatial technologies have to be im-bibed as part of the standard civil curriculum, not just as an elective”

Quah Beng Chieh, Head of Marketing, Asia Pacific, Faro Singapore

“It is estimated globally that full scale digitalization in construction can bring about 1.7 trillion dollars of savings; using digital construction lifecycle methods like BIM as centre point increases the transparency, optimizes the cost overheads and also aids in real time monitoring of the projects”

Lt. Gen. Girish Kumar VSM Surveyor General, Survey of India

GIS is becoming an essential com-ponent in government and day to

day life and to generate/acquire data, to process data and to disseminate data we need to have very simple policies.

D.P Mathuria Executive Director, National Mission for Clean Ganga

Sharing of data seamlessly through all the user departments is one of the most import-ant aspects which cannot be driven until and unless there is an integrated policy which is adopted at the national level and in which states are also involved.

Dr. Rajkumar Khatri Additional Chief Secretary, Govt. of Karnataka

Need to bring citizen on board, involve them and explain them. The decision makers need to explain them in simple terms the benefits of geospatial ser-vices and technology.

THE BIG DEBATE - Geospatial strategy for New India

The plenary session focused on the perspectives from key sectors to discuss on how a high-quality geospatial data and services underpinned by data-driven policymaking, national infrastructure development, citizen services and engagement can support the Indian economy. The focus was on developing a geospatial strategy for New India that enables the development of a National Geospatial Knowledge Platform which will help integrate spatial knowledge into everyday decision-making and support the emerging digital economy as well as give rise to spatially-aware and equipped citizens.

A S Kiran Kumar Vikram Sarabhai Professor, ISRO

What India has done over the last few years is trying to bring the space technology for necessary inputs required for carrying out the activities on the geospatial domain and trying to a build space platform and the capability to look at the earth in various insightful ways.

Rajan Aiyer Managing Director, Trimble

Geospatial technology is becoming very critical for nation building. It increases efficiency, reduces costs, basically makes timeline achievable.

Vinit Goenka Governing Council, Centre for Railway Information System

There needs to be great-er synergy between the government, industry and academia to sup-port the vision New India more holistically.

Jagdeesh Rao CEO, Foundation for Ecological Security

We need to take data and to translate it into action on ground so that all of the data and analytics is available for Panchayats, for ordinary citizens to act on issues concerning agriculture, water and their livelihoods.

Sanjay Kumar CEO, Geospatial Media and Communications

User departments are coming up softly but they need to develop more capacities to understand the tech-nology and also clearly define their goals of the project so that the industry can deliver those solutions better.

Agendra Kumar, President, ESRIAn integrated geospatial infrastructure gives you all the features and flexibilities of using different technologies, it gives you analytics, it provides you different content, it provides you publication facilities, it helps you access open data, it helps in creating different applications and sharing that across the community.

Pramod Kaushik President and Managing Director, Hexagon AB India

The trend is automation to autonomous. We need independent autonomous systems that when brought together work as one larger ecosystem.

Page 6: CONFERENCE REPORT - GeoSmart India · support the Indian economy. The focus was on developing a geospatial strategy for New India that enables the development of a National Geospatial

Data Driven Urban InnovationInnovative cities all over the world are investing in data development and are embracing collaborative practices: such as encouraging open data, public-private partnerships and knowledge exchange that support the innovation ecosystem – re-sulting in social and economic growth. A very important aspect of the conference was to cultivate an entrepreneurial culture and provide support to developing an innovation ecosystem. This culture brings in enhanced scope for universities, enter-prises, and the Government at large to foster innovative ideas and drive the Indian economy forward.

Nikhil Kumar Country Head, Here Technologies

Creating a more localized engineering group and that cannot be itself a one time, one party investment so I’m calling it as a collaborative geospatial investment; by bringing some of developers, start-ups to be able to engage with them and find solutions to their smaller problems and skill it up. We must create partnerships to scale as well to reduce cost.

Dr. Nadine Alameh CEO, Open Geospatial Consortium

I love start-ups. The big organizations are keeping an eye on start-ups and acquire them but at the same time I see that a large business needs a framework because the times are changing on everybody. The innovations are coming faster and faster so you cannot build empire anymore on one technology or one idea. We have to keep moving with the time.

Laveesh Bandhari Founder CEO, Indicus Foundation

One of the biggest problems that we find when we talk about data is that as more and more data be-comes available, in a very strange way, it also becomes less and less usable. One of the major reason is that a whole lot of new insights that can emerge from data re-quire us to merge data, aggregate data and analyze it in different ways especially when geospatial aspects come in; issue of collabo-ration between the organizations becomes more important.
