Chapter 2Notes

Note the following issues when connecting the ETERNUS AF/DX to a server.

2.1 Zoning

We recommend that the Fibre Channel switch port numbers, connected Fibre Channel cards, and CA WWNs ofstorage system be used to set up one-to-one zoning between Fibre Channel ports.

Zoning divides a Fibre Channel switch into zones according to port numbers of the Fibre Channel switch, con-nected Fibre Channel cards and CA WWNs of the storage system. This feature allows access from within thesame zone but restricts access from other zones, and localizes the management information that the FibreChannel switch manages.

2.2 System Topology

The procedure described here is for systems where server and storage are connected via Fibre Channelswitch. The connection is a "fabric connection".

2.3 Path Redundancy

When the ETERNUS AF/DX storage systems have multiple CAs, and a multipath disk control driver (path fail-over driver) is used to connect them to the server, at least two Fibre Channel switches should be used tomaintain the path redundancy. Connect the two CAs that will form the multipath to different Fibre Channelswitches.

2.4 ISL Trunking

ISL Trunking is the function to secure the order of commands, integrating as many as eight ports betweentwo adjoining Fibre Channel switches, and delivers traffic on wide area bandwidth.

The ISL Trunking function, available in ETERNUS SN200 series and Brocade series, is not described in thismanual. For the details, refer to the User Guide of the Fibre Channel switch.

2.5 Mixing ETERNUS SN200 Models

The firmware level of the ETERNUS SN200 series varies as follows, depending on the model:

ETERNUS SN200 model name Firmware level

ETERNUS SN200 models 210 and 240 Fabric OS v3.2.0a

ETERNUS SN200 model 320 Fabric OS v5.0.5d

ETERNUS SN200 models 220 and 230 Fabric OS v5.1.1b

ETERNUS SN200 models 120, 430, 480, 485, 450M, 490, and540

Fabric OS v5.3.0d

ETERNUS SN200 models 140, 600, 630, and 660 Fabric OS v6.1.1

ETERNUS SN200 model 250M XPath OS v7.4.1e

When SN200-SN200 cascade connection is used, the presence of models with firmware levels differentfrom those shown above in the same fabric as the above models may cause SN200 operational instability.

The zoning settings should also be updated after the cascade connection is complete.

When in the same fabric as a SN200 model 600, 630, or 660, the other SN200 models must be running thefollowing firmware versions:

ETERNUS SN200 model name Firmware level

ETERNUS SN200 models 210 and 240 Fabric OS v3.2.1c

ETERNUS SN200 model 320 Fabric OS v5.0.5f

ETERNUS SN200 models 220 and 230 Fabric OS v5.3.1b

ETERNUS SN200 models 430, 480, 485, 450M, 490, and 540 Fabric OS v6.1.1

ETERNUS SN200 models 600, 630, and 660 Fabric OS v6.1.1

ETERNUS SN200 model 250M XPath OS v7.4.1e

SN200 models 210 and 240 "Core Switch PID format" parameter must be set to "1" when other models arepresent in the same fabric.

Use the "configure" command to change "Core Switch PID format" setting.

For details, refer to the Fabric OS reference manual.

2.6 Domain ID

When connecting a HP-UX server to the Fibre Channel switch, set the domain ID to a value other than "8".When the domain ID is set to "8", the device cannot be recognized correctly.

2.7 Cascade Connection Restrictions

• For the ETERNUS SN200 models 120 and 140, cascade connection is not available.

• For the ETERNUS SN200 model 210 standard configuration, only one port can be used for cascade connec-tion.

• No more than two ETERNUS SN200 model 220 or model 230 Fibre Channel switches may be connectedwithin the same Fabric.

2.8 Fibre Channel Switch Notes

• Before installing the Fibre Channel switch, read the User Guide and Setting Procedure Guide provided withthe product.

• When installing two Fibre Channel cards to one server for path redundancy, connect each Fibre Channelcard to different Fibre Channel switches.

If they are connected to the same Fibre Channel switch, a single point of failure results in loss of redundan-cy.

2.9 Settings for When the Storage Cluster Function Is Used

If the ETERNUS AF/DX is connected to the Fibre Channel switch with the Storage Cluster function, set RSCNsuppressed to disable.

For details on how to set RSCN suppressed, refer to "portcfg rscnsupr" in Fabric OS Command Reference.

2.10 Settings for When the Storage Cluster Function Is Used witha Transfer Rate of 8Gbit/s

When a device is connected to the Fibre Channel switch with a transfer rate of 8Gbit/s, the Fillword settingmay be required for stable communication.

In general, set "Mode 3 (Link Init/Fillword = ARB(ff)/ARB(ff))" for 8Gbit/s connections because the device thathas a transfer rate of 8Gbit/s operates with ARB(ff). If a connection fails with Mode 3, setting "Mode 2 (LinkInit/Fillword = Idle/ARB(ff))" is recommended.

However, when the ETERNUS AF/DX is connected to the Fibre Channel switch with a transfer rate of 8Gbit/sand the Storage Cluster function is used, set Fillword to Mode 2 (Link Init/Fillword = Idle/ARB(ff)).

For details on how to set the Fillword, refer to "portCfgFillword" in Fabric OS Command Reference.

Names of Fibre Channel switches are also used for the setting names for Fibre Channel switches. Pleasepay attention to the following points when assigning names to Fibre Channel switches.

• The setting names for Fibre Channel switches should be composed of 18 characters or less.

• Use a letter (upper or lower case) for the first character.

• Use alphanumeric characters or an underscore (_) from the 2nd character on.

2 Assign IP addresses to the Fibre Channel switches.

If the Fibre Channel switches are connected to a global LAN, consult with the network administrator toassign each switch an individual IP address (assign a local IP address to each switch for maintenancepurposes, even if the switches are not connected to a network).

3 Decide "zones" for the Fibre Channel switches.

The Fibre Channel switch provides a function called "zoning". This divides a Fibre Channel switch intozones between pairs of ports. This feature allows access from within one zone but restricts access fromother zones.

In this example, the zones are decided as follows:

• Fibre Channel switch 1 (SN200_01)

Between Port 0 and Port 1: "ZONE0"

Between Port 2 and Port 1: "ZONE1"

• Fibre Channel switch 2 (SN200_02)

Between Port 0 and Port 1: "ZONE2"

Between Port 2 and Port 1: "ZONE3"

Port numbers may differ, depending on the Fibre Channel switch model.

3.3.1 Assigning the Switch NamesTo manage Fibre Channel switches, assign a different name to each switch. Pay attention to the followingrestrictions when assigning names to switches.

• The setting names for Fibre Channel switches should be composed of 18 characters or less.

• Use a letter (upper or lower case) for the first character.

• Use alphanumeric characters or an underscore (_) from the 2nd character on.

Example:

If the switch name is assigned as "SN200_01", record it as follows:

3.3.2 Assigning the Switch Domain IDsSwitch domain IDs should be assigned to each Fibre Channel switch. You can assign any integer from 1 to239. However, when connecting the Fibre Channel switches (cascade connection), it is necessary to assigneach switch a different switch domain ID.

When connecting Fibre Channel switches in a cascade configuration, assign a different switch domain IDfor each Fibre Channel switch.

We also recommend that you assign each switch an individual switch domain ID for the future, even if theswitches are not currently connected by a cascade cable. If Fibre Channel switches with identical switchdomain IDs are connected by a cascade cable, the switch domain ID will automatically be changed to anunrecognized ID, or the synchronized setting information of the switches cannot be collected. In the worstsituation, the data may be lost.

When connecting a HP-UX server to the Fibre Channel switch, set the domain ID to a value other than "8".

A Fibre Channel switch domain ID is required in order to set the zoning.

3.3.4 Deciding the SFP TypeDecide the SFP module type that will be attached to the port of a Fibre Channel switch. Different SFP mod-ules are shown below. Select the module depending on the connection method of the port.

• SWL (Short Wave Length) type (SFP/SFP+) (*1)

Used as a part for connecting the server, ETERNUS AF/DX storage systems, and Fibre Channel switches, or toconnect two or more Fibre Channel switches together. SWL connection distances depend on the transferrate:

- For 32Gbit/s transfer rate: maximum of 100 meters (SFP+)

- For 16Gbit/s transfer rate: maximum of 125 meters (SFP+)

- For 8Gbit/s transfer rate: maximum of 190 meters (SFP+)

- For 4Gbit/s transfer rate: maximum of 400 meters (SFP/SFP+)

- For 2Gbit/s transfer rate: maximum of 500 meters (SFP/SFP+)

- For 1Gbit/s transfer rate: maximum of 860 meters (SFP)

*1: mSFP is not supported.

• LWL (Long Wave Length) type

LWL type is for connecting two or more Fibre Channel switches using cascade connections, when the FibreChannel switches are more than 300 meters apart.

Make sure to use the same type of SFP module as the connection port for each Fibre Channel switchwhen connecting two or more Fibre Channel switches with cascade connections.

Example:

Connect Fibre Channel cables (about 10m length) from each of switch port 0 and port 1 to the devices. UseSWL type for the SFP module of port 0 and port 1, because the distance between the ports and the devices isshort. Do not connect other ports using SFP.

3.3.5 Specifying Cable TagsMultiple Fibre Channel cables are used when connecting Fibre Channel switches with the ETERNUS AF/DXstorage systems or the server, or when connecting two or more Fibre Channel switches. This makes it difficultto understand how the cables are connected.

To avoid confusion during system maintenance, we recommend that both ends of each cable be labeled witha tag in order to easily recognize which cable is for which device/port.

These tag names can be chosen freely, but it is recommended to choose tag names that are easily recog-nized, for each connection port/device (storage system, server or Fibre Channel switch) to which a FibreChannel cable is connected.

Example:

Switch port number "0" is connected by a cable to Server 1 (SLOT 0). Moreover, switch port number "1" showsthat it is a cable connected to ETERNUS AF/DX storage systems' CM0CA00.

3.4 Configuring the Fibre Channel Switch Zones

The Fibre Channel switch provides a function called "zoning". This divides a Fibre Channel switch into zonesbetween pairs of ports. This feature allows access from within one zone but restricts access from other zones.

Zoning is used for the following purposes:

• Synthesizing heterogeneous environments

• Protecting fabric areas

• Stabilizing system performance

This feature allows device access from within the same zone, but restricts device access from other zones thathave different attributes.

The following describes the procedure for entering zone settings into the Fibre Channel zoning settings table.

3.4.1 Zoning TypesThere are two types of zoning: port zoning and WWN zoning. This section describes how to set up port zon-ing.

Port zoning

Port zoning specifies the port information (zone member) of the Fibre Channel switch for a registeredmembers of a Fibre Channel switch zone group.

Port information (for a zone member) includes information regarding the switch domain ID and the switchport number.

For example, if the switch domain ID is "1" and the port number is "2", port information displays (1, 2) asthe zone member.

Zones are recognized by port locations, so the connecting device information is not required.

However, you need to re-enter the zone information whenever you change the Fibre Channel switch domainID or the location of the device connection port.

3.4.2 Deciding the Device Connection PortsYou need to decide in advance which ports of the Fibre Channel switch are to be connected to the server orthe storage system.

Referring to the system configuration diagram, enter the zone settings used between the Fibre Channelswitch and the storage system/servers and the chosen wiring layout in the zoning settings table (wiring dia-gram).

The following describes the procedure for entering information into the wiring diagram.

1 Refer to the system configuration diagram, and enter products (the server, switch, storage system) thatare necessary to the configuration, into the zoning settings table (wiring diagram). Also, enter the ba-sic setting information such as device names and IP addresses for the entered devices.

Page 25: Configuration Guide -Server Connection-This chapter describes configuration backup methods for the Fibre Channel switch. The Fibre Channel switch command list and setting table list

2 Follow the instructions described in "System Configuration" to connect the cables between Fibre Chan-nel switch ports and devices or adapters.

3 Select one of the Fibre Channel ports of the ETERNUS AF/DX storage systems, and check which server-side Fibre Channel cards and paths are connected to that Fibre Channel port.

4 The Fibre Channel switch ports corresponding to the path route checked in Step 3 are grouped as onezone. Enter the zone number into the appropriate cell indicating the server port/storage system portconnection.

5 Repeat Step 3 and Step 4 for all of the Fibre Channel ports that are connected to a Fibre Channel switch.

6 Make sure that all of the zone numbers have been entered.

The following shows the results of creating a zoning settings table (wiring diagram) using the system config-uration diagram example given in "3.1 Checking the System Configuration" (page 14).

The following procedure describes how to create a zoning settings table.

3.4.4 Deciding the Zoning Definitions, Information 1: AliasWhen performing zone settings for a Fibre Channel switch, it is necessary to set the information regardingwhich ports will be included in a zone. We recommend that you assign each port a simple name for conven-ience. Define an alias to set a symbolic name for each fabric port.

3.4.5 About AliasesAn alias is a symbolic name freely assigned to an interface port of the Fibre Channel switch.

Assigning aliases to ports helps you understand the connection relations between devices and ports, andeasily make settings for zones and members.

For example, instead of assigning aliases such as "Switch #xx" or "Port yy", that are taken directly from theswitch port number, use aliases such as "SERVER1_SLOT0" to indicate the relation between the connected de-vice and the port.

3.4.6 Alias SettingsA Fibre Channel switch port that configures an alias is called an "alias member". When configuring, the portnumbers are shown as below in order to display each port as an alias member.

1 Alias member (selected port number)

Alias member (selected port number) = (Switch domain ID, switch/port number)

You can use any words for an alias name, however, pay attention to the following restrictions whenassigning alias names.

• Use alias names that help you understand and locate the devices that are connected to the ports (forexample, use a name such as "SERV1_SLOT0" if it is connected to Server#1_slot0).

• Distinctions are made between upper case and lower case letters.

• Spaces in a name are disregarded.

• Use a letter (upper or lower case) for the first character.

• Use alphanumeric characters or an underscore (_) from the 2nd character on.

3 Cable tags

Multiple Fibre Channel cables are used when connecting Fibre Channel switches with the ETERNUSAF/DX storage systems or the server, or when connecting two or more Fibre Channel switches. Thismakes it difficult to understand how the cables are connected. To avoid confusion during system main-tenance, we recommend that both ends of each cable be labeled with a tag in order to easily recognizewhich cable is for which device/port.

You can use any words for the tags, however, make sure that the words are easy to understand, and areconsistent with the information in the previously created Fibre Channel switch settings table.

Example:

The following shows the cable tags between the Fibre Channel switches and the ETERNUS AF/DX stor-age systems, as used in the previously created Fibre Channel switch settings table.

4 Preparations needed for WWN instance management table for storage system are complete now. Theremaining information is entered during setup.

3.5.2 Host Interface Management (CA Port Settings)If the ETERNUS AF/DX is connected to a Fibre Channel switch, the Fibre Channel interface for the CA in theETERNUS AF/DX must be set to a topology that can establish fabric connections.

Use ETERNUS Web GUI or ETERNUSmgr to change to a topology that can establish fabric connections.

3.6 Preliminary Server Settings

The following procedure is the preliminary server settings. Refer to chapters for each OS for details on thesettings. This section describes the method used to create a table of the path routes from the server to theETERNUS AF/DX.

1 Creating a path route table

Note relevant information about the paths connecting the server and the storage system on the pathroute table.

2 Creating a WWN instance management table for the server

Create the frame for the WWN instance management table for the server.

3.6.1 Creating a Path Route TableCreate a path route table (management sheet) to plan how to connect the server and ETERNUS AF/DX stor-age systems' connection paths.

Storage system sideServer side

By creating a path route table, you can identify which Fibre Channel card in which slot on which serverthrough which CA is connected to which ETERNUS AF/DX.

If the connection configuration between the server and the ETERNUS AF/DX is multi-path, depending on therelationship between the multipath driver and the storage system, the configuration can be Primary path/Secondary path. When the load balance function is installed, more than one path can be configured.

You must be careful to determine if the configuration is multi-path or not when creating the path route ta-ble.

Primary Path and Secondary Path

For the Assigned-CM type storage systems, the path that passes through the controller (CM) assigned tothe RAID group that is being accessed is called the Primary Path. Conversely, the Secondary Path is thepath that is being kept as a standby for the Primary Path.

4 About other items

Some parameters, like the Fibre Channel card WWNs, instance names and physical addresses, can onlybe checked when actually making these settings. Refer to "Chapter 4 Fabric Setup" (page 40) for de-tails.

Also note that a server-side instance name setting is only needed if the server is using Solaris OS incombination with certain Fibre Channel cards (GP7B8FC1U/GP7B8FC1X, PW008FC2U/PW008FC2X,PW008FC3U, SE0X7F11F, SE0X7F12F, SE0X7F11X, SE0X7F12X, or LPxxxx series). This setting is not oth-erwise needed.

This completes the preliminary operations for Fibre Channel switch, server and ETERNUS AF/DX storage sys-tems' setup.

4.2.2 Setup Procedure

1 Connect the maintenance Ethernet cable in order to perform settings, then turn on the Fibre Channelswitch.

(1) Connect an Ethernet cable.

Maintenance operations require the use of a computer, with an Ethernet interface.

Connect the computer to the RJ-45 connector (Ethernet connector) on the front panel of theswitch using an Ethernet 10/100BASE-T crossover cable.

The factory set default address is for the local address only; it cannot be used to connect to thenetwork. If it is connected to the network, it may cause major disruptions. When connecting tothe network, be sure to consult with the network administrator and set the address that thenetwork administrator indicates.

(2) Turn on the Fibre Channel switch.

The Fibre Channel switch runs POST automatically after the power is turned on. During phase, theFibre Channel port LED blinks continuously.

2 Set the IP address of the maintenance computer.

To perform Ethernet connections with a Fibre Channel switch and cross cable, change the IP address onthe maintenance computer to correspond with the IP address of the Fibre Channel switch (default). (Tochange, follow the instructions in the computer).

(1) Start Windows® and open the control panel.

Click [Settings]-[Control Panel] from [Start] button.

(2) Click [Network] in the [Control Panel].

(3) Select [Network Settings], then select "TCP/IP->*********" in [Current Network Components],and click [Properties].

(The (*********) part is the "TCP/IP protocol LAN controller" for the computer that you are using.)

(4) Select [IP Address] in [TCP/IP Properties], check [Specify IP Address], and then enter the IP addressand the net mask that are assigned to the terminal used for maintenance.

Do not assign an IP address that has already been assigned to some other device, like a FibreChannel switch.

(5) Click the [OK] button. The "Restart Windows?" message is displayed; click the [Yes] button.

The IP address for the maintenance computer has been set when Windows® has restarted.

Example:

For the ETERNUS SN200 series, as the default IP address for the Fibre Channel switch is "192.168.30.70",the maintenance computer should be assigned an IP address such as "192.168.30.80".

When connecting Fibre Channel switches in a cascade configuration, assign a different switch do-main ID for each Fibre Channel switch. We also recommend that you assign each switch an individualswitch ID for the future, even if the switches are not currently connected by a cascade cable. If FibreChannel switches with identical switch domain IDs are connected in a cascade configuration, theswitch domain ID will automatically be changed to an unrecognized ID, or the synchronized settinginformation of the switches cannot be collected. In the worst situation, the data may be lost.

9 Cascade connect the Fibre Channel switches (if cascade connection is to be used).

When connecting Fibre Channel switches in a cascade configuration, connect the cables before doingthe zone settings.

If the cascade connections have been made, by setting the zoning for one Fibre Channel switch, thesame settings will be automatically propagated to the other Fibre Channel switches.

Connect the Fibre Channel switches in a cascade configuration.

If you have set different zones for the multiple Fibre Channel switches before connecting them in acascade configuration, the setting information will not be propagated and synchronicity will not beachieved, even if you connect the cascade cable after that.

10 Set the Fibre Channel switch port speed.

For some Host Bus Adapter (HBA) to Fibre Channel switch connections, the link speed is not operatorsettable. When connecting such an HBA to a Fibre Channel switch, try setting the connected FibreChannel switch port to the expected link speed.

Use the "portcfgspeed" command to set the connected Fibre Channel switch port. The new speed settingis enabled after the affected port link has been shutdown and restarted.

• Command syntax

portcfgspeed [slotnumber/]portnumber speed_level

slotnumber

Specifies the slot number of the port being set.

Required for switches such as SilkWorm 12000, 24000 and 48000 which have director-type slots.

portnumber

Specifies which port is to be set.

speed_level

Specifies the speed level of the port.

The available speed varies depending on the type of switch or SFP module. Check the specificationof the switch or the SFP module for the available setting range.

0 : Automatic mode. Speed is set automatically, usually to the maximum available speed. Mayresult in an undesired speed being set in some cases.

1 : 1Gbit/s mode. Port speed is fixed at 1Gbit/s.

2 : 2Gbit/s mode. Port speed is fixed at 2Gbit/s.

4 : 4Gbit/s mode. Port speed is fixed at 4Gbit/s.

8 : 8Gbit/s mode. Port speed is fixed at 8Gbit/s.

16: 16Gbit/s mode. Port speed is fixed at 16Gbit/s.

32: 32Gbit/s mode. Port speed is fixed at 32Gbit/s.

• Example:

The HBA that can be connected to port0 of ETERNUS SN200 model 430 with the speed of up to 4Gbit/sbut that has only auto negotiation function as a FC link speed setting. Because the expected value isthe link speed of the Fibre Channel switch port and HBA is connected with the speed of up to 4Gbit/s,perform the following setting.

portcfgSpeed 0 4

The current port speed settings can be checked by executing the "portcfgshow" command. Executingthis command displays the status of each port, with the current port speed setting shown in the "Speed"line as follows:

AN: Automatic mode. Port speed is set automatically.

1 : 1Gbit/s mode. Port speed is fixed at 1Gbit/s.

2 : 2Gbit/s mode. Port speed is fixed at 2Gbit/s.

4 : 4Gbit/s mode. Port speed is fixed at 4Gbit/s.

8 : 8Gbit/s mode. Port speed is fixed at 8Gbit/s.

16 : 16Gbit/s mode. Port speed is fixed at 16Gbit/s.

32 : 32Gbit/s mode. Port speed is fixed at 32Gbit/s.

For example, a fixed Port#3 speed of 4Gbit/s, with all the other port speeds set to Automatic, will resultin the following output:

4.3 Setting Up the Fibre Channel Switch Zoning Functions

Refer to the zoning settings table, WWN instance management table for the server, and WWN instance man-agement table for storage system that you made in the preliminary setup and perform the zone settings. Ifthe Fibre Channel switches are connected in a cascade configuration and you set the zoning for one FibreChannel switch, the setting information is automatically propagated to the other Fibre Channel switches. So,it is not necessary to duplicate the zone settings for the other Fibre Channel switches.

The following shows the complete flow when doing zone settings connected to telnet.

1 Alias settings

Set symbol names that are intuitive and easy to understand for each port of each Fibre Channel switch.

2 Zone settings

Create the zone using zone members (alias names) set in Step 1.

3 Set the zone configuration

Set one configuration for some zones that were created in Step 2.

4 Enable the zone configuration

Enable the configuration created in Step 3.

We recommend connecting the Fibre Channel switch cables with cascade connection before setting thezoning. If you have set different zones for the multiple Fibre Channel switches before connecting them ina cascade configuration, the setting information will not be propagated and synchronicity will not be ach-ieved, even if you connect the cascade cable after that.

A setting example based on the zoning settings table created in "3.4.9 Zoning Settings Table" (page 29) isshown.
