Anna Bacon, Program Specialist in the Meadows, has been a valued employee for over nine years and has established herself as an exceptional advocate for the individuals we serve at Melmark. She always puts the needs and the best interests of the adults in the Meadows first and works hard to help each of them achieve success. Anna values the suggestions she receives from her co-workers and uses that information to provide effective program plans.
Anna always has a positive and courteous demeanor whenever she works with the men and women in the Meadows and with her co-workers. She offers assistance whenever necessary and is quick to offer solutions. Anna works collaboratively with her fellow staff to make sure their input is incorporated. Anna’s first concern is always with the individuals, and it shows in their progress and growth in the programs. The Meadows participants and staff are very thankful to have Anna as a teacher, advocate and friend. Melmark appreciates all of her efforts and congratulates Anna on achieving this deserved recognition. Please join us in congratulating Anna Bacon on being selected as Melmark’s January 2016 Employee of the Month!

As we look ahead to what the rest of 2016 holds for us, many of us anticipate exciting opportunities in our personal and professional lives. The new year often brings a renewed sense of energy and enthusiasm to many of us in the form of New Year’s resolutions. Whether your goal is to exercise and eat healthier, to approach new learning opportunities or to take more time to reflect on those things you are thankful for, we can each use this time of the year to embrace new challenges.
I will and encourage each of you to take a moment to consider how you can make one change in your daily routine to provide a better sense of community to those around you. Perhaps it is as simple as smiling and saying hello to a colleague when you meet them on the sidewalk; stopping to talk with a student or adult served by Melmark to get to know them better; or participating in the Peer Mentor Program to assist new staff members as they make the transition into what can often be extremely challenging roles. These actions are reminders that it takes all of us to make this the community in which we love working.
Let’s use the days and months ahead of us to make sure we are doing all we can to keep Melmark the Center of Excellence it is known as being. Thanks to each of you for all you do every day to improve the lives of the children and adults we serve. Your commitment to them and to their families is unmatched.

Kicking off a Year of CelebrationsFlag Raising and BreakfastMelmark kicked off its 50th anniversary year with a flag raising and celebration breakfast on January 27, 2016. Clients, family members, friends, volunteers and staff were at the event, which celebrated the history and future of Melmark.
After a performance by The Joybells, Melmark President and CEO-Elect, Rita Gardner, M.P.H., LABA, BCBA talked about the impact of one couple’s dream to make a difference for their daughter, Melissa. Afterwards, retiring President and CEO, Joanne Gillis-Donovan, Ph.D. thanked all staff for their compassion and tireless work. She highlighted the many successes of The Joybells as she congratulated Joybells Director, Sue Graves, on her 25th anniversary with the bell choir.
Following the morning’s special presentation, which included artwork by Melmark students and gifts handed out by children and adults, guests proceeded to Center Circle outside Melmark’s Main House. They watched as Melmark’s original resident, Melissa, along with her sister Diane Krentel-Hodge, hoisted Melmark’s 50th anniversary flag. Rita Gardner and Joanne Gillis-Donovan completed the flag raising ceremony together.
We were thrilled to have our friends from 6abc and NBC10 join us for the event.

Advocacy CornerBudget Impasse UpdateAs we head into the New Year, Pennsylvania’s budget impasse continues. However, Governor Tom Wolf did authorize emergency education and human services funding to schools and organizations like Melmark. These funds allow providers to be paid for the services that have been delivered to the children and adults in our programs.
Locally, Representative Thomas Killion has announced his candidacy for the 9th Senatorial District seat recently vacated by Senator Dominic Pileggi; Senator Pileggi now serves as a judge on the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas. The 9th District includes a large part of both Chester and Delaware counties. A special election date has been set for April 26.
Also within the region, longtime Delaware County Representative William Adolph, Jr. has announced that he will not seek re-election and will retire this year after serving 14 terms in the Delaware County’s 165th Legislative District. He has been the Chair of the House Appropriations Committee since 2010. The 165th Legislative District includes parts of Radnor, Marple, and Springfield townships and the borough of Morton.
We are looking forward to welcoming U.S. Senator Robert Casey, Jr. to Melmark within the upcoming weeks. Additional details will follow when the planned visit has been scheduled and finalized. Michael Donovan

Ballet, Art and MusicChildren and Adults Enjoy Art-Reach OpportunitiesOver the past several months, Melmark has renewed a longtime partnership with Art-Reach, a Philadelphia-based non-profit. Art-Reach provides opportunities to traditionally under served audiences to enjoy the arts. During the month of January, children and adults participated in three spectacular events, ranging from art-making classes at Philadelphia’s legendary Magic Gardens to dance rehearsals alongside members of the Pennsylvania Ballet. Below are photos highlighting these amazing opportunities.
