    Dear Friend,

Welcome to the New Year! A new year can bring manychanges: new resolutions, new goals, retirements, jobsearches, graduations, new beginnings. But the good

news for the Christian remains: God is with you throughall changes. He is the one constant and His wordremains steadfast and solida sure guide through all oflifes ups and downs.

Speaking of changes, youll find some in our latest issueof Connection: the magazine. We hope these additionswill help your personal walk with Christ.

First, we really want to get you reading the Bible. Ournew section, UpReach, is designed to be a daily reader, encouraging you to read from the Bible every day. When the year is over, youll have read the entire Bible! In addition to the daily reading plan, weve given you averse to reflect on throughout your day.

Second, weve added a section called The Vault. Inside, youll find quotes fromChristians of the present and the past. These will help give you perspective andinspiration on each main theme inside Connection: the magazine.

Third, weve added a section called Take & Read. Here, youll find excerpts fromforthcoming books Ive written. We hope they encourage you to read more thisyearto learn deeper about God and the Christian life.

Finally, youll notice several smaller departments: The Gallery (highlighting a poemand photograph), Really? (fast facts relating to the topic of the magazine), andStaff Picks (where our wonderful staff at the Connection choose books, CDs, andDVDs that we think will help you grow in your Christian walk). Furthermore, weveadded a little extra fun with a crossword puzzle.

Our winter issue deals with a very real topic: worry and fear. With the economicsituation looking bleak, threats of new viruses, political unrest, and so much more, there appears to be so much to worry about and fear in the world today.

But for the Christian, we should not worry or fear. Why? Because God is in control! In fact, in Jesus Sermon on the Mount, three times He commanded Do not worry!(See Matthew 6:25-34). Fear and worry will not solve the worlds problemsor yours. But trusting in the One who knows our future willkeep us in His perfect peace.

Let this year be a time where you pursue Godwith your whole heart, mind, soul, and strength. Entrust your day-by-day needs and worries to Him. When you seekHis truth and presence, God will do amazing things in your midst. Remember: Godand His Gospel are never-changing truth in ever-changing times.

    In His strong love,

    Pastor Skip

Its been saId that we can measure lIfe lIke thIs:y p i pp o igy p

    i o po. w Go o i ig oo, i o poiiiy i o po ppopiy.

Ted Engstrom once wrote an example: Cripple him and youhave a Sir Walter Scott. Lock him in a prison cell and you have a

John Bunyan. Bury him in the snows of Valley Forge and you have

a George Washington. Raise him in abject poverty and you have

an Abraham Lincoln. Strike him down with infantile paralysis

and he becomes Franklin Roosevelt. Burn him so severely that

doctors say he will never walk again and you have a Glenn

Cunningham, who set the worlds one mile r ecord in 1934.Deafen him and you have a Ludwig van Beethoven. Have him or

her born black, in a society fi l led with racial discrimination, and

you have a Booker T. Washington, a Marion Anderson, a George

Washington Carver. Call him a slow learner, retarded, write him

off as unable to be uneducated and you have an Albert Einstein.

These people all responded well to the adversities of l i fetheygot the eighty percent right. Although there was pain and

suffering, they didnt fold; they kept going. We all know that

suffering is a part of l i fe. As Christians, we call these times

trials. Everyone goes through trials: some small, some big, and

    some really, really big. It could be a debil itating or fatal disease;

it could be the loss of a career; it could even be the death of a

loved one. How do you respond? Lets look at a time in Davidslifehow he turned trials to triumph and worry to worship.

All Shook UpDavid was a mover and shaker who inf luenced the na-

tion of Israel during i ts inception. But in al l his movingand shaking, he shook things up a lot. His relationshipwith King Saul was so shaken up that he became ahunted and hated indiv idual . When we experiencecircumstances s uch as Davids, we wonder, Am I going

in the right direction? Is God real ly in al l of this? Is Hegoing to show Himself strong?

We know that trials are meant to shape and mold us.I f you travel to St. Andrews, where they f irst manu-factured golf bal ls , you l l discover the f irst bal ls weresmooth. Unti l they learned you could gain distance byroughing up the surface. Thats when they put dimplesin the golf bal ls so they would travel further. Al l because

of their surface imperfections. The same is true of us:we need some rough spots in our l ives so that we cango the distance.

David understood rough spots. After David ki l ledGol iath and defeated the Phi l ist ines, Saul grew jealouswhen the women sang as they dan ced, and said: Saulhas slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands(1 Samuel 18:7) . Saul became angryand envious. He

was a walking, talking, breathing paradox. In one instanthed be doci le l ike a kitten with David; the next , hed bea raging l ion. He even tried to ki l l David with a spear!Psalm 59 is Davids response to this hor rible t ime. Thepsalm shows that some of the worst occasions canprompt some of the most beauti ful results. When wereshaken up, we can fol low Davids example and go fromworry to worship.

Just the FactsDavid prayed a very specif ic prayer: Del iver me from

my enemies, O my God (Psalm 59:1) . Somet imes wefeel gui l ty i f we come into Gods presence and tel l Him,Hey, I have a need! We thin k, Oh, I shouldnt have donethat. I sho uld have at least said, Praise the Lor d f i rst.But here we see that David offered a very specif ic , veryto-the-point prayer.

Later David described his problem in det ai l : For look, they l ie in wait for my l i fe; the mighty gather againstme (Psalm 59:3). Are you in danger ? Being attacked?Feel ing the brunt of someones antagonism? Tel l Godabout i t . Its not that God needs the information. But Ibel ieve the more specif ic the prayer, the more specif ic

the outcome. Dont pray just to be understoodmakeit impossible to be misunderstood. Once again, i tsnot that God needs to understand every word yourearticulatingbut i ts important that you do. Then you l lunderstand exactly w hat youre praying for.

    Unshockable

Davids prayer was also honest . He didnt pray, Lord, please bless, lead, guide, a nd direct me. Instead heasked God to punish al l the nations; do not be merci fulto any wicked transgressors (Psalm 59:5).

Hes saying, Lord, blow them out of the water! Thatshonesty. Were shocked that David would pray thisitseems more l ike the prayer of a Mafia hit man. Butremember, this psalm transforms into a worship song.

And just because we might pray this very honestlyitdoesnt mean Gods going to do this. The Scripture isinspired but i t doesnt mean that Davids thoughts wereinspired. Its simply good to know there is an accuraterecord of Davids prayer contained in the infal l ib le,inspired Word of God. And arent you glad Go d doesntsay yes to al l of our pr ayers? Sometimes He says noand quite ofte n He says wait .

The point is that David was open and honest with God.This means we need to be open and honest about howwe feel . Pour out your heart to your he avenly Father. Hecan handle i tGod is unshockable. Lets be honest andal low God to f i l ter through our requests and feel ings.

I Didnt Do Anything!Another key to Davids prayer l i fe is he evaluated his

situation. He cried out, For look, they l ie in wait for myl i fe; the mighty gather against me, not for my transgres-sion nor for my sin, O Lord. They run and prepare them-selves through no fault o f mine (Psalm 59:3-4). Davidisnt claiming sinless perfection. But he is saying, Itsnot my faultI didnt do anything! Remember Davidsstory: he was a shepherd who happened to be anointedby a prophet. He worked for King Saul as a musician. Hehad faith enough to ki l l Gol iath and he became a hero. And although he del ivered Israel , he became the mosthunted man in al l the country. As he wrote this psalm,he appraised his situatio n and concluded: Al l this hashappened through no fa ult of my own.

David knew he was in the wi l l of God and prayed withgreat confidence. This is simi lar to what the apostle

Dont pray just to be understoodmake it impossible to be misunderstood.

Sk Hz is the authoro the book Godprint and

is the senior pastor oCalvary o Albuquerque.

John wrote: Beloved, i f our heart does not condemnus, we have confidence toward God. And whatever weask we receive from Him, because we keep His com-

mandments and do those things that are pleasing inHis sight (1 John 3:21-22). Lets learn to appraise theattacks that come in l i fe. Assess who theyre from. I fthe attack is true, be open to changebut i f i t s false, move on.

A woman approached Dwight L. Moody, the great evan-gel ist from Chicago after hed given a message. She hadl istened careful ly for any words he might mispronounce

or grammatical er rors. She said, Mr. Moody, I m an Eng-l ish teacher and it s appal l ing how youve butchered thegrammar of the Engl ish language. I would think that i f someone was going to speak to this many people, theywould at least master t he Engl ish language. He said,Wel l , maam, Im doing the very best for Jesus withwhat I have. Then he paused, looked intently at her,and said, Tel l me, maam, are you doing the very bestfor Jesus with what you have? Of course, that ended

that cri t ique. He was able to appraise the attackaswas David.

Ill Tell God on YouDavids prayer was confident: But You, O Lord, shal l

laugh at them; You shal l have al l the nations in derision.I wi l l wait for You, O You his Strength; for God is mydefense (Psalm 59:8-9). Notice the change of att i tudein Davids prayer l i fe. He used the conjunction but to

contrast how he felt with his confidence regarding whatGod would do on his behalf . He real ized that the peoplef ighting against him were real ly f ighting against God.

God has defended His people on many o ccasions. A fewyears ago, I was in the Phi l ippines to meet with churchleaders. They told me about a group in t hat area cal ledthe NPA, the New Peoples Army guerri l la group. Theywere so bold that they had wa lked into a church with

guns loaded and told the con gregation, Wel l be backnext Sunday morning for your worship service. We wantal l the churchs assets and al l your money. You better behere because i f you dont come were going to destroythis church and this v i l lage. How many people do youthink showed up the next Sunday mor ning? They al lshowed upand early . They prayed even though theyknew two jeeps f i l led with NPA were on their way to

their v i l lage. But on the way there was an accident. Bothjeeps overturned and the guerri l las, on their way t o ki l lthose bel ievers, were al l k i l led.

There was great confidence in church that morning.Isnt i t great to know that wh en youre in the wi l l ofGod, you can say, You better watch i tI l l tel l God onyou! Davids psalm portr ayed this confidence: I wi l lwait for You, O You his Strength; for God is my defense(Psalm 59:9).

    From Worry to Worship

Davids prayer was also progressive. He said: But Iwi l l sing of Your power; Yes, I wi l l sing aloud of Yourmercy in the morning (Psalm 59:16). The circumstanceshadnt changedbut David had. The song that began inpanic ended in praise. It progressed in confidence andit progressed in trust.

In the Hebrew language, the wor ds sing and waitare identical except for one stroke of the pen. One tiny

change marks the di f ference in the meaning. The lessonis clear: when we are going to God and looking to theLord, we are just on e stroke away from a song. Do youhave joy? Can you sing in the circumst ances youre in?If not, maybe you havent been wait ing for the Lord.Maybe your confidence hasnt been in Him at a l l .

Charles Spurgeon s aid, Any fool can sing in th e day.Its easy to sing and read the notes by dayl ight, but theski l l ful singer is the one wh o can sing when theres nota ray of l ight t o read by. Songs in the night come onlyfrom God for they are not within the power of man.Heres an important question: Have you honest ly prayedto Jesus Christ asking Him to be your Savior and yourLord? Its the most important prayer you can utter. Andit begins your journey from worry to worship.

Pour out your heart to your heavenlyFather. He can handle itGod is unshockable.

Recently, San Diego County ocials interrogated andthreatened a pastor and his wie who host a Bible study intheir home. Ater questioning the couple, the representativeinormed them that their weekly meeting, averaging aroundteen people, was against county regulations and aced a

hety ne. A ew days later they received a writtenstatement citing a violation o unlawul use o land. Theywere asked to stop religious assembly or apply or a majoruse permit. Over time, such a permit could cost thousandso dollars. The anonymous couple submitted a complaint tothe county deending their First Amendment right to religiousreedom.

There are times that the law o God must supersede the lawo men. In Exodus, the king interrogated two aithul Hebrewmidwives, commanding them to abort all male children bornto the Jews. But the women practiced civil disobedience, earing God rather than man.

saved the male children alive. So the king

o Egypt called or the midwives and saidto them, Why have you done this thing, and saved the male children alive? Andthe midwives said to Pharaoh, Becausethe Hebrew women are not like the Egyp-tian women; or they are lively and givebirth beore the midwives come to them.Thereore God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied and grew verymighty. And so it was, because the mid-

    This Too Shall Pass

I I can endure or this minuteWhatever is happening to me,No matter how heavy my heart isOr how dark the moment may be

I I can remain calm and quietWith all the world crashing about me,Secure in the knowledge God loves meWhen everyone else seems to doubt me

I I can but keep on believingWhat I know in my heart to be true,That darkness will ade with the morningAnd that this will pass away, too

Then nothing in lie can deeat meFor as long as this knowledge remainsI can suer whatever is happeningFor I know God will break all o the chains

That are binding me tight in the darknessAnd trying to fll me with earFor there is no night without dawningAnd I know that my morning is near.

s: I have one of your favorite quotesfrom John Wesley. He said, I value allthings only by the price they shall gain ineternity. That sort of sums up your viewof having an eternal perspective, right?

Randy: Yes it does. Lets think now andlive now in light of eternity. Were goingto spend the rest of our lives not in thisworld. Were going to spend just a littlebit of time in this world. Whether I die inten seconds during this interview, whichfor your sake as much as anything I hopedoesnthappen,orIdieinanotherftyyears, the point is that its going to besuch a small length of time that Ive gotleft here in this life. But Im going to liveforever in another world. Am I preparedfor that world? Am I thinking in terms ofthat world? And am I living in terms ofthat world?

s: How do you then live with thatkind of a grid in making daily decisions?

Randy: I think 2 Corinthians 4:18: Whilewe do not look at the things which areseen, but at the things which are notseen. For the things which are seen aretemporary, but the things which arenot seen are eternal. And I think thatperspectivethat eternal perspectiveiswhat we aim for. The eternal perspective

    28

is the ability to say, Im living for thisshort period of time on this earth thatslike a dot. But from that dot comes a linethatowsout for alleternity.

And if Imsmart Imgoing tolive for theline, not forthe dot.And manypeople arejust livingfor the dot;theyre justlookingthis wayand thatway. I thinkthe waythat youovercome that is by reminding yourself,as Scripture says in Colossians 3:1-2, were

to set our minds on things above, whereChrist is. Second Peter 3 says we arelooking forward to a new heaven and anew earth in which righteousness dwells. And since we are looking forward tothese things, what sort of people oughtwe to be in terms of life and godliness? If youre faced with a temptation, and

s H recentlyspo wth Randy Alcorn.Randy is the ounder oEternal PerspectiveMinistries and the author

Fear and worry tend toconsume our lives; but Goddoesnt want that or His chil-dren. Instead, we should becultivating an eternal perspec-tive and looking to what Godhas in store or us through alleternity.

that is exciting. And I think that can helpus break out of this short-term mentalityyoure talking about.

s: Amen. We need to lay up forourselves treasures in heaven.

Randy: Right, because as long as werestoring for ourselves treasures on earth, then were going to be living in light ofthe things of this earth that are passingthatareeeting.Andifyourestoringupfor yourselves treasures on earth, whichJesus tells us not to do, then He says

where your treasure is, there your heartwill be also. You know what? If yourespending your whole life accumulatingtreasures on earth, then every day youget closer to the day of your death, youremoving away from your treasures. Youreone day closer to the day when youregoing to lose your treasures. Becauseeither theyre going to be taken from

you or theyre going to be destroyed oryoure going to be taken from them byyour death. But one way or the other, you and your earthly treasures are goingto be parted. Youre not going to havea long-term relationship with thesetreasures on this earth. But Jesus says toturn it around, face the other direction.Lay up for yourselves treasures in heavenwhere moth and rust dont corrupt,

where thieves dont break through andsteal. For where your treasure is thereyour heart will be. Because then everyday of my life, if Im a follower of JesusChrist, that means Im headed for heaven. And if Im laying up treasures for myselfin heaven, as Jesus commanded us to

do, that means everyday of my life as Iget closer to the day of my death, insteadof backing away from my treasures, Imheaded toward my treasures.

youre thinking this life is all that itsabout, youre tempted to grab for amomentary pleasure. But if youre seekinga higher treasure, a treasure that is goingto last forever, then youre going to say,Hey, why would I compromise my lifewith this that wont bring eternal joy, andeven what little it will bring is for a verypassing moment in time, when I couldchoose that which will enrich me andglorify God for all eternity?

s: And those are daily disciplines, arent they, Randy? Because were

surrounded by a culture that lives for thedot.

Randy: Exactly. I mean, people thinkeverything is so short-term. And eventaking an expression like grab for all thegusto and you only go around once inthis life and all of that. You know what? You dont only go around once, in one

sense. Because the Bible talks about anew earth where were going to live forall eternity. The passages in 2 Peter 3 andalso in Isaiah 65 and 66 and Revelation 21and 22. God is going to redeem the earth. The work of Christ, as Romans 8 says, isfor all of creation. The whole creationgroans in longing for the deliverance thatwill come with the resurrection of thechildren of God. And what that means is

that we dont just have one life on thisearthwell have two lives on this earth.Brieyinterrupted,youknow.Thelifewere living now, on an unredeemed, imperfect fallen world. But then Scripturetalks about the new earth where welllive in resurrected bodies. Its like saying,

Well, Ill only have a body once. No,you have a body now; your body will dieif its before the return of Christ whenyou die. But then, for all eternity, youllhave a resurrection body. Likewise, for alleternity youll live on a new earth. And
