The Second Sunday of Lent
Of you my heart has spoken: Seek his face. It is your face, O Lord, that I seek; hide not your face from me. (Cf. Psalm 27)

ENTRANCE ANTIPHON Second Sunday of Lent MORNING SONG
PENITENTIAL ACT I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,
(and striking their breast, they say)
through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.
KYRIE Missa Secunda Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612)

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD FIRST READING Genesis 22:1-2, 9a, 10-13, 15-18 RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 116 Owen Alstott
SECOND READING Romans 8:31b-34 GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Frank Schoen
GOSPEL Mark 9:2-10 HOMILY CREED I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
(all bow through “and became man”)
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate
he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen

COMMUNION MOTET O nata lux Thomas Porter
O nata lux de lumine, Jesu redemptor saeculi, dignare clemens supplicum laudes precesque sumere. Qui carne quondam contegi dignatus es pro perditis, Nos membra confer effici, tui beati corporis.
O born light of light, Jesus, redeemer of the world, mercifully deem worthy and accept the praises and prayers of your supplicants. You who once deigned to be clothed in flesh for the sake of the lost ones, grant us to be made members of your holy body.

Later this week we will be offering two additional times to receive the Sacrament of Penance. On First Friday, confessions will be heard at 11:30 a.m. and on First Saturday, confessions will be heard at 9:00 a.m. (during the morning Mass). These are in addition to the regular weekly confession times on Wednesday and Saturday at 1:00 p.m. My sincere hope is that every single Cathedral Parishioner will go to confession at some point during this Season of Lent. Growth in holiness requires us to recognize our sinfulness and to place ourselves before the mercy of Jesus who comes to us in this sacrament with his full power as God. To be forgiven gives us a great sense of peace.
Forgiveness from God challenges us to think about how we are to forgive others. As we think about the ways we are called to forgive, I share with you the “10 Commandments of Forgiveness” which Bishop Daly preached about several weeks ago. Many of you told me how helpful his homily was and so I re-print those commandments here: ● Forgiveness is not easy
● Forgiveness is not forgetting
● Forgiveness does not overlook evil
● Forgiveness is not indifference
● Forgiveness is not the same things as approval
● Forgiveness recognizes that people are always bigger than their faults
● Forgiveness allows a person to start all over again
● Forgiveness recognizes the humanity of the wrongdoer
● Forgiveness surrenders the right to get even
● Forgiveness wishes the offender well
As we continue our journey through Lent, let us seek forgiveness from God and let us offer forgiveness to others as well. Asking for the prayers of Our Lady of Lourdes, I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ,
Fr. Darrin Connall, VG Rector

Scriptural Reflection February 28, 2021 — Second Sunday of Lent
GN 22:1-2, 9a, 10-13, 15-18; PS 116:10, 15, 16-17, 18-19; ROM 8:31b-34; MK 9:2-10
Today's readings are a powerful testimony to God’s profound love for each one of us. It is a reminder for us, as Christian stewards, to surrender all that we have to the Gracious Giver. The First Reading from Genesis is the infamous story of God putting Abraham to the test. God commands Abraham to offer his son, Isaac, to the Lord as a sacrifice. Abraham obeys the Lord. Yet, a messenger of the Lord cries out at the last moment to stop him. Because of Abraham’s faithfulness and surrender to the Lord, he is blessed abundantly. We can only imagine how Abraham felt, offering the life of his son, not understanding why, but blindly obeying. Yet, Abraham’s response of total surrender to God’s plan is a testament to trust in God’s deep love for us. As Christian stewards, we are called to surrender all to the Lord — our time, our talents and even our material possessions. We should willingly give God our entire lives with the confidence that He will take care of us. St. Paul echoes this message so beautifully in our Second Reading. He says, “He who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all, how will he not also give us everything else along with him?” God loves us so much that He gave us His only Son who suffered, died and rose for us. He has given us His very best. Can we not entrust our entire lives to Him knowing He will continue to pour out His love on us? As we continue our journey through Lent, let us reflect on God’s profound love for us.
