PrincipleIn the spirit of the Fundamental Law of Education, the aim of Hirosaki University is to acquire a wide store of knowledge for in-depth teaching of and research inthe professional arts and sciences; to develop the intellectual, moral, practical, and applicable capacities of staff and students alike; and to produce futureleaders supplied with insights sufficiently broad and well informed that they can help shape the future of human culture.

ObjectivesHirosaki University will consist of five faculties (Humanities, Education, Medicine and Health Sciences, Science and Technology, and Agriculture and LifeSciences), each offering a wide range of academic disciplines. We will make full use of these faculties particular strengths to develop educational and researchprograms for a greater and better regional contribution. To express this determination we have taken as our motto: Hirosaki University: Establishing a GlobalIdentity, Creating with the Community.

Educational Aims. Hirosaki University aims to cultivate individuals who are active in seeking out important issues and will contribute as independent-mindedcitizens to specialized, high-level activities at domestic as well as international levels. Through our interdisciplinary Graduate School for Regional Studies we areputting particular emphasis on the education of creative and original thinkers who will play a leading role in the development of our community.

Research Aims. Hirosaki University strives to provide leadership, direction, and support in order to achieve research results that are international in scope yetcontribute to the region; timely yet with a view of long-term results; emphasizing basic research yet seeking to achieve a fusion of humanities, social sciences, and the natural sciences.

Regional Contribution. Aomori Prefecture, in which Hirosaki University is located, has a decreasing and aging population and a relatively weak productiveinfrastructure. For these reasons, younger people are leaving the prefecture in increasing numbers. Hirosaki University s Center for Joint Research, Center forEducation and Research of Lifelong Learning, Tokyo Information Office, and Hachinohe and Aomori Satellite education sites are among the positivecontributions we are making to strengthen regional development through a cooperative effort of industry and academia. Because Aomori Prefecture also suffersfrom a shortage of medical and nursing personnel, the Hirosaki University Hospital, as the main medical facility in the prefecture, has assumed a central role increating better access to medical services in the region.
