The 2017-18 music season at Christ Church Cathedral is a particularly exciting one. For one thing, the cathedral is celebrating its 200th birthday as a congregation! For generations, Christ Church has supported excellence in music in worship services and in concerts, both within its walls and in the Greater Cincinnati community. Many of the events in this brochure are offered in gratitude for our past and with anticipation for our future.
This season is also exciting because we will celebrate the installation of a new organ in our renovated Centennial Chapel. Opus 148, built by C. B. Fisk (one of the most respected organ builders in the world), is a stunningly beautiful instrument modeled on Italian organ-building principles. I invite you to experience the new organ in a series of inaugural events outlined in this brochure.
I hope you will join us often as we celebrate our birthday!

Bach’s supreme achievement of setting the Mass text for soloists, chorus, and orchestra summarizes his writing for voices and instruments, not only in the variety of styles, compositional devices, and range of sonorities, but also in the high level of technical polish. The Mass in B Minor is a pinnacle of the Late Baroque period.

Worlds Align Friday, October 6 | 7:30 PM R. Carlos Nakai, Native American flute; Northern Kentucky University Philharmonic Orchestra; Amy Gillingham, conductor
The Northern Kentucky University (NKU) Philharmonic Orchestra, in collaboration with Christ Church Cathedral, presents a concert in recognition of the cathedral’s Indigenous Peoples’ Weekend. The concert explores the concept of “world” and centers around James DeMars’ Two World Concerto with renowned Native American flutist R. Carlos Nakai. David Maslanka’s jubilant World Music and Antonín Dvorák’s popular Symphony No. 9 “From the New World” finale complete an exciting musical exploration and aligning of “worlds.”
No admission charge. Suggested donation of $10 for general admission ($5 for students) to benefit the NKU orchestra 2018 Ireland tour.

Christ Church Cathedral ChoirThe Christ Church Cathedral Choir is an ensemble of auditioned professional and volunteer choristers who sing at weekly Sunday morning services, monthly services of Evensong, and other major liturgical observances in the church year. The choir offers a range of choral literature from the Anglican cathedral tradition, the folk tradition of African-Americans, newly written works, and idioms from other cultures. The choir is directed by Stephan Casurella.
Auditions: Choir auditions are held every summer.
High School Choral ScholarsThe cathedral’s choral scholars are high school students who participate in all the duties of the Christ Church Cathedral Choir as apprentices. They are trained in the art of fine choral singing and perform at a professional level. They sing a wide range of repertoire, such as works by Tallis, Brahms, and
CHOIRS OF CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL
Howells, as well as spirituals and music of other cultures. They are compensated with a monthly stipend throughout the academic year.
Auditions: To apply for a choral scholar position, students must complete an application packet before being invited to audition. Auditions are held every summer.
Christ Church SingersThis non-auditioned ensemble is designed for those who love to sing but are not able to commit to the Christ Church Cathedral Choir’s rehearsal and performance schedule. Supported by a quartet from the Cathedral Choir, the Singers meet for a single rehearsal and service several times throughout the season.
Cathedral Choir of Children and YouthThe Cathedral Choir of Children and Youth (CCCY) is a citywide choir program that fosters a lifelong enjoyment and appreciation of music through the singing of sacred choral compositions. The program,
which is based on the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) Voice for Life curriculum, is open to children as young as those in grade two. No prior music experience is required. Choristers have the opportunity to develop musical confidence, make new friends, and experience music education and faith formation. Directed by Christopher Wheeler, the choir performs periodically at Christ Church Cathedral and other churches and venues throughout Greater Cincinnati. This performance schedule gives choristers the opportunity to remain active participants at their home churches, while serving other communities through their music making. Older choristers are invited to audition for placement in the advanced CCCY Singers in addition to their choir participation.
The CCCY season runs September through May. While choristers are encouraged to join the choir at the beginning of the season, interested young people may be accepted at other times during the year. Rehearsals are held Wednesday evenings, 6:30-8:00 PM.
