THE BOT AND IA conversation on conversational computing
TRACING CONVERSATIOAL COMPUTING

IN THE BEGINNING EVERYTHING WAS CUI (COOEEY)
➤ Programmers are the first people who started speaking a language that computers could understand.
➤ For a long time, all computing was conversational. But it was a language of the few.
➤ In time the need was felt to make Human Computer Interaction more broad-based. Thats when GUI was invented.
➤ GUI is not Natural - which is why designers make so much money. :-)
THE FIRST WAVE - 20 YEARS AGO
THE SECOND WAVEwhy is conversational computing making a comeback
#1 - THE INTERNET IS NOW ONE BIG API
#2 - THE INVERSE CURVE OF COMPUTING PROGRESS
problem complexity
time to solve
1995 - writing an executable
1997 - hosting static html sites
2001 - dynamic websites
2003 - crawling and parsing html
2007 - NLP, text Indexing, social
2011 - Big data, hadoop
2016 - Literally anything!
#3- ZUCK WANTS YOUR CHAT
There is more money to be made in conversational e-commerce than has been collectively made till now
GIVEN A CHOICE WOULD YOU
EVER STARE AT A SCREEN FOR
ANYTHING ?apart from netflix, I mean
NO UI IS THE BEST UI
➤ All interfaces are unnatural and barriers to ubiquitous computing.
➤ Imagine what would happen to humans, if every time we met someone new, we would have to go through their on-boarding process or their take the tour
➤ Conversations are the ONLY way we should interact with computers for mundane tasks.
BUILDING BOTSthe future is about bots that build bots which talk to bots
Building software is no longer about lines of code - its about assembling blocks and wiring them together.
Its possible to put together complex solutions in place using APIs and Platforms as a service.
A 30K FEET OVERVIEW OF BOT ARCHITECTURE
ATHENA – A BOT PLATFORM FOR CONTENT DRIVEN BOTS➤ This isn’t about AI, but software can be smart without being AI. The usage of the term brain is to
differentiate between the action and the logic part of a bot.
➤ Athena is the “brain platform” we built at FactorDaily for powering our bots.
➤ What Athena does for you
➤ Signup users.
➤ Lazy signups adapted to platforms
➤ Maintain context and detect returning users.
➤ Local storage mechanism for memory
➤ Sockets based event broadcast mechanism to enable push notifications.
➤ Push notifications for bots
➤ Create conversation flows and change conversations on the fly.
➤ JSON based external dialog files
➤ Create new intents and actions at runtime.
➤ Plug in to any intent management system you choose, at runtime.
➤ In short, Athena allows you to rapidly write bots without having to worry about a server side framework.
THE FUTURE OF USwhat will we do when conversational computing completely
arrives
ARCHITECTS WELCOME
➤ Programmers and designers will need to merge and become integrators.
➤ Platforms are our frenemies
➤ A lot of jobs will disappear, thank you very much!
➤ But, understanding a vast array of platforms - and when to deploy which - will become vital expertise.
➤ Domain specific conversational experience
➤ Moving businesses from current flows to AI based flows
A PARTING THOUGHT
What will finally happen is a seamless flow of information, tasks, communication and entertainment, driven purely by devices like Google Home , Amazon Alexa, and Apple Siri. You will never see the computer. And it will never leave you.
