Please read all instructions before beginning. Pre-washing NOT recommended.
Yardages and Cutting WOF is 42" width of fabric from selvage edge to selvage edge. LOF is length of fabric, parallel to the selvage edges.
Remove as little fabric as possible when trimming selvages and squaring strip ends.
Black-frame Cool Cats panel
White-frame Cool Cats panel From each panel, cut the following:
• Fussy-cut (6) 11" x 11" squares, keeping the
black or white edging even all around
2 1/4 yards Cool Cats border stripe • Place the fabric with the black/white stripe section
on the left. Cut (1) 6 1/2" x LOF strip—begin
3/8" out from the third white stripe on the left of
a black paisley section as shown then cut 6 1/2"
over from there. Repeat to cut a second black
strip. Trim to 64".
• Repeat to cut (2) 6 1/2" x LOF white strips; do not
trim shorter.
1/2 yard bead swirl • 4 strips 3" x WOF; cut into (48) 3" squares.
5/8 yard teal print
5/8 yard purple print From each fabric, cut the following:
• 1 strip 15" x WOF; cut into (12) 1 3/4" x 15"
strips. Trim remainder of strip to 12 1/2" and
cut into (12) 1 3/4" x 12 1/2" strips.
3/4 yard heart print • 8 strips 2 1/4" x WOF for binding.
1 2/3 yards black print • 1 strip 12 1/2" x WOF; cut into (24) 1 1/4" x
12 1/2" strips.
• 1 strip 11" x WOF; cut into (24) 1 1/4" x 11"
strips.
• 12 strips 2 1/4" x WOF for borders.
5 3/8 yards 42" backing fabric • 2 strips 93" x WOF.
OR
2 1/4 yards wide backing fabric • 1 piece 78" x 93"
Batting • 1 piece 78" x 93"
Piecing the Blocks Use a 1/4" seam allowance for all stitching. Press seams as directed.
1. Sew 1 1/4" x 11" black strips to left and right sides of each black-edged panel square. Press seams toward the
strips. Add 1 1/4" x 12 1/2" black strips to the top and bottom. Press seams toward the strips.
2. Repeat step 1 with 1 3/4" x 12 1/2" teal strips and then 1 3/4" x 15" teal strips to complete (6) 15" x 15" teal
block units. Press seams toward the strips.
Teal Block Unit — Make 6
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to complete (6) 15" x 15" purple block units, using the white-edged panel squares and
1 3/4" x 12 1/2" purple strips and 1 3/4" x 15" purple strips for the outer round. Press seams toward the strips.
Purple Block Unit — Make 6
4. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each 3" bead swirl square.
5. Place marked squares right sides together on each corner of each teal block unit. Sew on the lines. Trim seam
allowance 1/4" out from the stitching. Press the bead triangles open with seam allowance toward the triangles to
make (6) 15" x 15" Teal blocks. Repeat with the purple block units to make 6 Purple blocks except press seams away
from the bead triangles.
Teal & Purple Blocks — Make 6 of each
Completing the Quilt Refer to the exploded quilt diagram on the next page throughout the following steps.
1. Stitch 2 Teal blocks together with 1 Purple block to make the 15" x 44" row 1. Press seams toward the Teal
blocks. Repeat to make row 3.
2. Sew 2 Purple blocks together with 1 Teal block to make row 2. Press seams toward the Teal block. Repeat to
make row 4.
3. Join the rows to complete the 44" x 58 1/2" quilt center. Press seams to one side.
4. Stitch the 2 1/4" x WOF black strips short ends together to make a long strip. Press seams to one side. Cut
into 2 strips each 74", 63", 58 1/2" and 47 1/2". Stitch the 58 1/2 strips to the sides of the quilt center and the 47 1/2"
strips to the top and bottom to complete the top. Press seams toward the strips.
5. Center and sew 6 1/2" x LOF white border stripe strips to the long sides of the quilt center, beginning, ending
and locking stitches 1/4" from the corners of the quilt center. Repeat with the 6 1/2" x 64" black strips on the top and
bottom. Miter corners using your favorite method, checking to be sure that all corners lie flat and the stripe sections
match. Trim mitered corner seams to 1/4" and press open. Press border seams toward the border strips.
6. Sew the 2 1/4" x 74" black strips from step 4 to the long sides of the quilt center and the 2 1/4" x 63" strips to
the top and bottom to complete the top. Press seams toward the strips.
7. If using 42" backing fabric, remove the selvage edges from the backing pieces. Join the pieces on the long
edges with a 1/2" seam allowance. Press seams open. Trim to make the 78" x 93" backing piece.
8. Layer the quilt top with the backing and batting pieces. Quilt as desired. Trim batting and backing even with
the top.
9. Join the heart print binding strips on the short ends with diagonal seams to make a long strip. Press seams in
one direction. Press the strip in half along the length with wrong sides together. Bind the quilt edges using your
favorite method to complete the quilt.
