Community Electric Cooperative line technician Ryan Hewitt recently graduated from apprentice to journeyman status following his completion of thousands of hours of extensive

training. Hewitt completed his final Step 8 journeyman class on March 12 at the Electric Cooperative Training Center in Palmyra, Va. The Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives owns and operates the state-of-the-art center, which opened in May 2019.

“We send Ryan and his family many praises and congratulations for his hard work and dedication to complete this demanding training and program. Ryan, along with all of our apprentices and lineworkers are such an asset to Community Electric Cooperative,” says Steve Harmon, president and CEO of Community Electric Cooperative.

Glen Presson, CEC’s manager of operations, says the program includes a wide range of skills from climbing, knowledge of electricity, substation work, underground and overhead work, leadership, and “like us, they put a strong emphasis on safety — which is really important for the cooperatives and for their families.”

There is a great need to diversify and increase the amount and availability of journeyman lineworkers. Doing so will help us keep the lights on while we deal with retirements within our industry and at our cooperative, says Presson.

“If we can provide them the tools to not only do their job well but also return back to their families, then we have all done a good job.”
