Dear Parents/Guardians,

Year 12 Farewell – State-wide ‘No Muck Up!’

The final day that Year 12 students are expected to attend school this year is on Wednesday, October 19 th. This will be followed

by a week of ‘swot vac’ and Year 12 exams commencing with English on Wednesday October 26 th. That said, students at the

College studying LOTE – Indonesian undertook their oral exam in Wangaratta last week.

Prior to their exams it is essential that students maximise their focus on their studies. They need our full support during this

challenging period. Each year the Department of Education and training forwards a memo to all principals of Secondary

Colleges and P-12 Colleges highlighting the state-wide expectation to the end of the year by Year 12 students.

Although October 19th should be a pleasant end to their formal school education it is NOT a ‘muck up’ day. Consistent with the

approach throughout the state student misbehaviour on the day will NOT be tolerated (this applies to ALL students). Students

who damage property, disrupt the school or engage in unlawful behaviour will face strong sanctions. It should also be remem-

bered that it is a trespass offence for unauthorised people to be on school property after school hours. As in previous years, a

security firm will be engaged to protect school property during the final few evenings.

SunSmart Term 4

Parents and students are reminded that our College is a SunSmart school. Each year in Terms 1 and 4 our SunSmart policy

requires students to wear a broad-brimmed hat whenever they are out in the sun including sport or PE classes, and including

recess and lunch breaks. Parents are asked to assist us by ensuring students attend school during Term 4 with an appropriate

broad-brimmed hat.

Enrolments for 2017

The College is well under way in making plans for the curriculum it will be offering in 2017.The gathering of accurate enrol-

ment information is vital to the planning of classes, timetables and allotments at a school. Please ensure you inform the school

sooner, rather than later about your plans for next year if you are leaving the town or you intend to enrol a child at the College.

This is particularly important in a couple of year levels where numbers are approaching the maximum for either one class or two

classes. In such situations schools may not be able to accommodate late enrolments as this requires the splitting of classes and

the corresponding allocation of further teachers and adjustments to the timetable. The whole process of advertising, interviewing

and appointing a new teaching employee takes the best part of four weeks and cannot be expedited due to strict DET merit and

equity procedures.

I would hate to have to turn a family away, even temporarily, because the school is unable to accommodate the enrolment of a

new student.

Corryong College is seeking enrolment information for ALL year levels for 2017 NOW!

Student Accident Insurance – Ambulance Cover Arrangements

The Department of Education and Training (DET) has recently advised schools that parents should be reminded that the Depart-

ment does not provide personal accident insurance or ambulance cover for students. Parents and guardians of students, who do

not have student accident insurance/ambulance cover, are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured stu-

dents, including the cost of ambulance attendance/transport and any other transport costs. These costs may be recoverable from

the Department where an injury is caused by the negligence (carelessness) of the Department, a school council or their employ-

ees or volunteers.

Student accident insurance/ambulance cover policies are available from some commercial insurers, and can be obtained by par-

ents/guardians for individual students.

School Levies and Charges

Term 4 has just begun. Hence it is important that outstanding school levies and charges are settled as soon as possible.

School levies and charges for students undertaking programs at the College including instrumental music were distributed to

families via the post towards the end of Term 1. Payment of school levies and charges is a significant component of meeting a

child’s education. We ask parents to make arrangements, as soon as possible, for payment at the College Office. College Coun-

cil sets fees and charges in order to provide the quality of facilities and programs enjoyed by our students. Parents’ cooperation

is appreciated.

Thank you to all those parents that have already made payments. If you would like to make progressive payments, please contact

the College Office to make arrangements.

created vegetable babies while understanding the difference between dominant and reces-

sive traits. The babies tend to have eyes like their Mum and feet like their Dad.

Corryong College students have once again achieved exceptional results for their participation in the International English Competition

and Assessment organised by the University of New South Wales and Educational Assessment Australia in July this year.

39 students from the College were involved in the UNSW English Competition with two of those students achieving Merit level. An in-

credible 56% of all students who took part attained Credit certificates or higher.

Ellie Holland from Year 6 was awarded a Distinction certificate for her outstanding achievement of being placed in the top 3% of all Year

6 Australian participants. Year 7 student Barry Pearce is no stranger to attaining high results in this competition and he has once again

achieved a result that places him in the top 11% for his year level. Similarly, Matilda Houston, who is currently studying for her VCE,

was also recognized for attaining results that place her in the top 4% nationwide.

Year 12 is a particularly challenging year for any student and Corryong College would like to recognize the great achievements of Dillon

Jarvis, Isabel Cribb and Niam Foxcroft who were all awarded Credit certificates at this highly competitive level.

With results like these, there can be little doubting the fact that Corryong College English students are certainly going places!

1788 and a change in time.

What does the arrival of the First Fleet

at Sydney Cove, the French Revolution

and changing clocks all have to with

each other? Well, 1788 is the link! In

1788, while Captain Arthur Phillip was

getting his feet wet walking up the

beach, the leaders of the French Revo-

lution were making radical changes to

how they measured time (not to men-

tion the King of Frances collar size!)

The long and short of it was the French

proposed to divide a day in a period of

10 hours. Each hour would be made up

of 100 minutes while each minute 100

seconds. Clearly, it didn’t take on, alt-

hough members of the French were

still discussing it as late as 1900.

This week, in their STEAM studies,

the students in Years 5 and 6 were

challenged with the task of creating a

device that would measure a time in-

terval of 86 seconds, the equivalence

of a decimal minute. At the time of

writing this article the students are still

in the process of testing and modifying

their timepieces. I wonder how differ-

ent things might have been had we

adopted decimal time?
