Dear Parents & Carers,

Great students, great staff!
As I read the local paper stressing the State’s concerns regarding literacy and numeracy results in
Victoria’s Regional and Rural schools, I quickly re-assessed our own. Affirmed with what I
already knew, the reiteration of how blessed we are to have such brilliant students and staff was heart
warming. It is not often that I talk of the process of Teaching and Learning that commences in this proud
college and maybe that needs to change. As I review our data and also explore our own and other schools
in Learning Walks (reviewing classroom practice, teacher observation and seeking student feedback, as
part of a Principal’s role in cluster schools) it is obvious that the explicit teaching that encompasses
current evidenced-based high impact teaching strategies is vastly obvious across each of our classrooms
from Foundation, right through to our VCE/VCAL students. Unlike other schools, we have the skills to
value add to our students achievement outcomes as they progress through the years. Therefore, we achieve
some of the highest results in Year 12 across the State and this commences with the rich learning that
occurs through each year level, starting with the nurture of our impressionable Foundation children.
I would like to take this moment to really acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our teachers in
their continuous development towards the very highest capacity in teaching practice. We, as a
collaborative team, move through a school improvement model where all areas of student achievement are
covered, currently the focus lies heavily on ’Excellence in Teaching and Learning’ within curriculum
refinement; exploring in depth explicit High Impact Teaching Strategies that incorporate every lesson
commencing with unpacking with students the Learning Intention and Success Criteria. This supports
students in understanding what and why they are learning particular skills, as well as how they achieve
success in that learning experience. We strive for students to be active independent learners as we work
through a Gradual Release of Responsibility model; ‘I do’ (teacher), ‘we do’ (co-construct with class and/
or group), to ‘you do’ (independent). This is a strategy that can be also adopted at home.
Our strong work ethic resonates in our after-school Professional Learning Communities (weekly inquiry
based professional development) where we unpack a triangulation of data from formal assessment and
testing, anecdotal observation, pre- and post-testing, as well as teacher judgement to thoroughly understand
where each of our children are at in their learning journey. This occurs from Foundation right through to
Year 12. It is this analysis that we gain complete understanding of each child’s point of need and work
within groups to establish best strategies to move them forward. Where support is necessary, this too is
put in place with intervention programs occurring from Foundation through to Year 10. It is these
practices that many schools envy as within a number of schools, it is a rarity to see such continuous
dedication, collegiality and collaboration towards excellence amongst staff and moreover, the inspired
aspirations and pride our children have in learning. So lucky are we!
The pride, great relationships and obvious happiness strongly resonates in our daily activities.
We thoroughly know our children and our relationships are strong, giving our children confidence to
take risks to broaden their learning scope. These great photos taken only throughout the last week are a
fraction of what occurs in our usual daily schedules and reiterate the strong relationships we create,
paving way for committed life long learners. These make me smile from ear to ear.
From our F/1 cherubs having a great time experimenting 3D shape formation prior to getting their hands
into real clay, our Outdoor Ed crew exploring Bluff Falls, Year 11 gallivanting Melbourne’s sites,
10/11/12 meeting Australian renowned adventurer Tim Cope, Year 8’s taking pride in beautifying the
Science corridor and paying homage to great scientists throughout history in a painted timeline and our
amazing hospitality crew catering for a community event. Each week we display brilliance, excellence
and above all, true happiness!
It is with pride and thanks for our College that we look forward to what next week will bring,
