Winter Break occurs from December 11th through January 10th. Students wishing to stay on campus during Winter Break must complete the Winter Break Housing Application. For those students not registered to stay over break, residence halls will close at 6pm on Thursday, December 11th and will reopen at 10am on Saturday, January 10th. The following residence halls will be open for students during Winter Break; Babcock, Bissman, Bornhuetter, Kenarden and Luce. All other residence halls and all campus houses will be closed. Students who plan on staying on campus over break and currently live in a hall that will be closed will need to make arrangements to stay in an open building. It is recommended that students begin looking for a temporary housing location for Winter Break as soon as possible. Students who will be staying in temporary housing locations will need to have all residents of that room complete the Winter Break Temporary Housing Agreement Form.

Learning about each other’s Religious Tradition
On December 8 most students on campus will be either taking exams or preparing for them. Many Buddhists among them, however, will be marking Bodhi Day, commemorating the day that Siddhartha Gautama experienced enlightenment, thus becoming the Buddha, the “enlightened one.” Legend says that Siddhartha had been sitting under a ficus tree (also known by other names) and had been meditating for a week, seeking to discover the root of suffering and thereby overcome it. On a day that has come to be identified with December 8, he attained enlightenment (nirvana), freeing himself from all desire. Different schools of Buddhism celebrate this day differently. Many people string multicolored lights around their homes to symbolize the many paths to enlightenment. Many also light a candle. The lights and/or candles are lit for 30 days beginning on December 8. Eating a meal of rice and milk on this day is also customary, since Buddhist tradition teaches that an associate of the Buddha fed him rice and milk to help him regain his strength after his lengthy period of meditation. Some Buddhists also have ficus trees in their homes as a reminder of the Buddha’s experience of enlightenment, and this may also be decorated with lights at this time. Dialogue starters: In the US, the Christian holiday of Christmas has become a hyper-commercialized time for gift-giving and therefore for shopping. Ask a Buddhist friend how it feels to mark this day in a cultural context so diametrically opposed to the day’s essence. Think about: In what ways can you resist the encroachment of materialist, commercial culture on your own life and values?
