COSTUME AND PROPS

Joey Carabini, Tom Glasgow and Charlie Smith

CLOTHING Both the characters are

wearing modern clothing which is suited to young people between 15-20.

This is important as we must have relevant mise-en-scene in order to improve the authenticity and appeal more to our target audience.

Featuring well-known and respected brands such as Adidas and Nike (the shoes) add sophistication to our film and grab the attention of a wider audience.

MOTIF Joey’s shoes feature during the

opening twenty seconds (top right). This creates a narrative enigma as the audience wonder what the significance of his shoes are. This creates tension.

The main reason for featuring the shoes in the opening twenty seconds is to make them more easily recognisable during the P.O.V shot of Tom seeing them sticking out from behind a tree (bottom right). This makes it suddenly clear to the audience exactly what has happened and increases the sense of dramatic irony as Tom still doesn’t know but the audience do, heightening the tension.

THE PHONE Featuring an Iphone in

our OTS rather than a watch when Tom checks the time is also a way in which we are making the OTS more appropriate and appealing for our young target audience.

This suggests that our film is modern and uses modern technologies and props.

The featuring of an Apple product, similarly to Adidas and Nike, adds sophistication to our OTS.

FAKE BLOOD The use of fake made our film appear

more realistic and specific to the genre.

We made the blood out of washing up liquid, syrup, red food colouring and water. We then used a water bottle to squirt the blood on the tree.

We deliberately didn’t use a lot of fake blood because we believe that this keeps it more realistic and the realism has a greater impact on the audience.

We feel that the motion of the blood squirting onto the tree rather than dripping onto the ground or being poured over the surroundings was more shocking to watch. This element of shock is a key component of slasher films as it scares the audience more.

The fake blood on Joey’s chest and neck was placed strategically as the blood squirting on the tree suggests that he has had his neck cut.

We deliberately used a white t-shirt in order to emphasise the blood.

THE OBSTACLE We used a large

boulder which was already in our location as a make-shift prop to obstruct Tom.

We feel that it is important to include props from the natural environment in our location as the adds realism and makes it more believable.

The knife is wedged into a tree and dripping with fake blood, showing that it is the same weapon that has just been used to kill his friend.

This is suggesting that Tom’s death is inevitable. This looming sense of doom vastly increases the tension.
