Costume and Props

Genre ConventionsThe conventions of Alternative / Indie costumes, is that they generally dress quite plainly. the artists tend to wear very laid back, casual clothing which, tend to be of dark colours. For example; black skinny jeans, hats and black suits.

Costume Front cover The main image will be a mid-shot of the artist so the costume won’t be a main concern to focus on. The outfit choice will be kept simple and close to plain as the main images on covers tends to focus on the facial express and the actions, which is how I intend the cover to look. The costumes aim is to be as simple as a white t-shirt, for both male and female models depending on which is chosen for cover, with plain black jeans. This outfit creates dramatic contrast from the colours, which is suitable for the genre of the magazine but also doesn’t make the costume appear to dull. For the artists costume still remain interesting, accessories can be worn to stand out on the cover.

Costume throughout The costume throughout will remain fairly simple and will resembles some what casual clothing similar to street wear style.

Alternative artist are mainly represented through their music rather than their appearance as they all show their own way to be presented.

The clothing can vary from plain and simple to something adventurous and colourful, which all depend on the artist. I plan to include a range of different styles to show the difference between alternative artists.

Hair & MakeupIf the make up is minimal the hairstyle may be adventurous and vise-versa. The hairstyles will have a clean-cut but will have the ‘bed-head’ style and appear some what messy to give the indie/alternative look.

The makeup will remain natural, but for women will be visible, this will be shown through bold lips or smoky eye shadow.

Acting/PropsAlternative artists tend to show dominance and can be classified as intimidating. I plan for the artist featured in my magazine to appear edgy.

Some music magazine tend to use instruments featured on the cover and throughout to allow the the magazine genre to be known.
