We have some new and exclusive costumes inspired by the Horrible Histories range of books. Boys can dress up as a Tudor Executioner for the day or perhaps he’d prefer a Medieval Knight. Girls can dress like a royal queen, she can be Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria or Mary Queen of Scots.

Roald Dahl’s classics have got it all: golden tickets, greedy children meeting grizzly ends, and of course, chocolate. Willy Wonka or an Oompa Loompa are instantly recognisable and are great for kids who want to bring a bit of colour and flair to the Book Week parade.

Our exclusive Little Adventures® costumes are dedicated to nurturing imagination and magic that live in young children. Our wonderful collection is sure to bring a smile to any child’s face.

Classic Book Week Characters

Page 7: Costumebox book week complete guide 2015

Lewis Carroll’s enduringly popular tale of a girl who falls down a rabbit hole to a weird and wonderful kingdom ruled by the short-tempered Queen of Hearts is a classic source for Book Week character costumes. See below for our pick of Alice in Wonderland costumes, or get inspiration on our website for Mad Hatter fare.

Taking inspiration from the Harry Potter series is a popular choice for witches and wizards alike. Bring some magic to Book Week as Harry, Ron, Hermoine, or one of J. K. Rowling’s memorable minor characters such as Luna Lovegood, Bellatrix Lestrange or Mad-Eye Moody.

You don’t need to go all the way to Emerald City to find a costume for this Book Week favourite. Your son or daughter can skip down the yellow brick road as Dorothy or one of her companions, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, or the Scarecrow. Or for something completely different, a flying monkey!

Be infuriated no longer, Wally’s easy to find here! For teachers and students alike, Martin Handford’s iconic character is a fixture at Book Week parades. Wally is instantly recognisable and a childhood favourite.

A perennial classic, Little Red Riding Hood is a great choice for girls who can stare fear – and wolves – in the face. The distinctive red hood and rustic dress create a great traditional look, making this costume a go-to for Book Week. Add some fresh-baked goodies to the basket for extra authenticity!

Everyone loves The Cat in the Hat by Dr Seuss. “What would you do if your mother asked you?” Dress up as the Cat in the striped hat, of course! The Cat isn’t the only one with a box filled with Things – we’ve got a bunch of fun costumes and accessories too!

The adventures of Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit and Frodo, Samwise, Merry and Pippin in The Lord of The Rings enjoyed immense popularity as beloved creations of J. R. R. Tolkien well before Peter Jackson brought them to the big screen.

One of our classic through-the-ages theme is Robin Hood and his band of merry men. Just remember it was William Tell, not Robin, who shot an apple off his son’s head, so there’s no excuse for risking your friends’ scalps at school to show off your skills with a bow and arrow! Girls will find their literary counterpart in Robin’s companion, Maid Marian.

Peter Pan is the perfect character for boys who like to indulge in a bit of mischief from time to time. His companion Tinkerbell is fiercely protective, plucky and equally adventurous.

Fairytale Book Week Characters

Fairytale Book Week Characters

Cinderella’s rags to riches tale has cap-tured the imaginations of young girls for generations. The story is a good reminder that even princesses have to do their chores! Be her fairy godmother this Book Week and grant her wish to dress up as her favourite fairytale princess.

The Frozen phenomenon has prompted a flurry of officially licensed books, so parents should have no qualms about Elsa, Anna and Olaf joining in on the Book Week fun. You can be sure she’ll get plenty of wear out of this costume – good luck convincing her to Let It Go after Book Week!

Becoming a dashing prince for the Book Parade may not be the first thing that comes to mind for most boys, but it’s a sure-fire way to stand out and charm the girls. Girls will need little encouragement in bringing their favourite fairytale princess to life and ruling their own imaginary kingdom for a day. Just don’t let her get too used to the royal treatment!

Your daughter will be the fairest of them all at the Book Parade dressed as this classic fairytale princess. Send her along with an apple to complete the costume, but make sure it isn’t poisoned before she gives it to her teacher!

For the little girl who dreams of living under the sea, Ariel the Little Mermaid is the perfect Book Week inspiration. Based on the fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen, Disney’s version of the story is the most widely known, and is sure to inspire your little princess to imagine a life beneath the waves while shimmying to school in a fishtail.

While sitting in a tower with nothing to do, and – gasp – no books or internet, what else is there to do but sit and grow your hair? Another classic penned by the Brothers Grimm, the tale of Rapunzel is over 200 years old and received the Disney treatment with the film Tangled in 2010.

Girls dressing as princesses for Book Week are a tale as old as time, but Belle is a particularly apt inspiration given that it’s her love of reading that initiates her bond with the Beast, after he shows her his extensive library.

What’s a fairytale without a wicked witch? From The Wizard of Oz to Hansel and Gretel, this storybook staple gives the girls a chance to play the villain. Another great idea for the teacher who will not be defied!
