CoventryHistoric City Coventry has forever been known for both its exciting and eventful history. Starting life as a sparsely populated Saxon village, the city’s history has experienced enormous changes since its foundation as the small hamlet it once was to the successful and metropolitan city it is today.

1043–Leofric,thelocalEarlandhiswifeGodivafoundedaBenedictinemonasteryincoventry.

1345–coventrywasgivenitsfirstcharter,grantinglocaltownspeoplecertainrights.

1948–coventry’sfamousLadyGodivastatueisunveiled.Withinthesameyear,PrincessElizabethlaidthefoundationstoneofthenewcitycentre.

November14th,1940sawcoventrysubjectedtothemostsingleconcentratedattackonaBritishcityduringWorldWar2.Lastingatotalof11hours,theraidcompletelydestroyedover43,000homesalongwiththefamousstMichael’scathedral,devastatingthecitybuttheresidentscollectivespiritcouldnotbebroken.coventry’snewcathedral,builtin1962wasconstructedindedicationtointernationalpeaceandreconciliation,fondlyconsideredbyresidentsasasymbolofhopeandnewbeginnings.

1960 –ThefirstmosqueincoventrywasbuiltinEaglestreet.

1970–coventryPolytechnicwasfoundedbeforebecomingaUniversityin1992.

1980–Thecrueltwistofacripplingrecession,fuelledbyanoilcrisisandcitywidefactoryclosuresgavethecityableakandhopelessattitudeduringthe1980’s,articulatelyvoicedbycoventrybasedband,‘Thespecials’intheirhugelysuccessfultrack,‘GhostTown’.

The 21st Century2004–BothUniversitysquareandMillenniumplaceareopened.
