Bill AdairToday one of our fellow Ontarians will sustain a spinal cord injury resulting inpermanent paralysis.

Thus begins a grueling journey to rekindle a passionfor life and to find the courage to pursue newdreams. This journey takes years and is full oftreacherous barriers overcome only withtenacious determination.

At Canadian Paraplegic Association Ontario, our job is to work with each person with a spinalcord injury to defy tragedy and to build triumphin their own lives. We are there every step of theway. We rejoice with their success and we intensifyour efforts in times of trouble.

We will do whatever it takes to help eachindividual rebuild their life with dignity, passion, meaning and hope.

As peer support volunteers do today, Jimmieshowed John how life could be lived fully.

In turn, John often visited the ChristieStreet Hospital in Toronto and talked to theveterans about their future. He spoke tothem about creating an organization thatwould represent them, and bring positivechange in their lives. During a visit to thehospital he met Ken Langford, anotherveteran with an SCI, who agreed to workwith him to improve the quality of life forpeople living with SCI.

John and Ken proved to be a drivingforce and together they began to establishnetworks across Canada. Sadly we lost Kenthis past year at 91 years of age. Hecontinues to inspire us and is sorely missed.

John and Ken then approachedphilanthropists such as L.M. Wood (whoalso helped found the Canadian NationalInstitute for the Blind) and Conn Smyth(the hockey legend who provided officespace for CPA at Maple Leaf Gardens). These men brought in financial support andhelped to build important relationships withsponsors.

John asked his brother-in-law, WalterGordon (of the accounting firm Clarkson,Gordon and Company), and his wealthycousin, Bootsie Thomson to financially andphilosophically support the creation of anorganization of people with SCI.

John and Ken also spoke to Dr. HarryBotterell and Dr. Palmer McCormick aboutthe idea of medical professionals and peoplewith SCI working together to improvepeople’s quality of life. Dr. Botterellencouraged Dr. Albin Jousse to join them intheir quest. The doctors embraced JohnCounsell’s vision for people with SCI.

In short, John Counsell and KenLangford built partnerships, and fostered

collaborations and relationships, all insupport of what would come to be theCanadian Paraplegic Association (CPA).People came together to make a difference.

CPA Ontario continues on in this finetradition.

In 2008-2009, CPA Ontario hasexpanded its network in many ways. In theregions, we have created frameworksinvolving people living with SCI,community stakeholders, researchers andservice providers to help us serve our clientsthe best we can. Our 16 regional officeshave staff ready to help people who arenewly diagnosed navigate the system inrehabilitation, or living in the community. And our Peer Support Programme hasexpanded and now operates in 7 regionsinvolving 223 volunteers. As well, oursignature community event – theWheelchair Relay Challenge – has broughtin over $590, 000 fundraising dollars acrossthe province and, and at the same time, actsas a key awareness tool to shed light onaccessibility issues faced by people who havean SCI or other physical disabilities.

By working with community partners,we have been able to try new things. Wehave developed a unique model of servicewith Hamilton Health Sciences that has ourstaff embedded in the hospital’s acute careunit so that we can reach people who arenewly injured as soon as possible. We alsoled the development of the Job OpportunityInformation Network (JOIN) – apartnership of 25 employment serviceorganizations – which enables us to betterreach people with SCI and other physicaldisabilities who are seeking employment inthe Greater Toronto Area.

With 119,557 hours in total, we haveexceeded our annual targets in the provision

6 Canadian Paraplegic Association Ontario

2008/2009 Chair andExecutive Director’s ReportLieutenant John Counsell served in WWII. During the Battle of Dieppe, hewas injured and sustained a spinal cord injury (SCI). Back in Canada, he wasvisited in hospital by a peer named Jimmie Darou who also had an SCI.

of our core services. Our regional servicesshow a client satisfaction rate of 95%! Wehave reached over 200 people who havesustained a new SCI this year.

Provincially, we have worked hard todevelop partnerships and networks. Wehave begun creating SCI Solutions Alliancesacross Ontario. Included in this work, wehave collaborated with the Local HealthIntegration Networks (LHINS), SCIrepresentatives, researchers, community

advocates, and other stakeholders to unitearound issues of concern and to share bestpractices and knowledge. We have joinedwith five designated rehabilitation centresand lead trauma centres to provide the bestservice possible to people with new injuries.

We have also ensured that our resourcesare accessible. Our free Membership Forumevents and Knowledge MobilizationSeminar Series bring people together toaccess the right information at the righttime. Those further away can access thesepresentations in video format on our newlydesigned website.

We have made advocacy a priority acrossthe province. We have done so, byparticipating in 11 different committeesincluding the Accessibility for Ontarianswith Disabilities Act Committee.

Nationally, we remain strong membersin the Federation of CPA and we continueto network across the country withlike-minded people in other CPA provincialoffices. We have united with the emergingSCI Solutions Network across Canada thatreceives funding from the Rick HansonFoundation.

We also have a world-wide presence. Weare reaching out to educate and informothers about issues that people with SCIand other physical disabilities face, throughour website. We received 60,182 visitorsfrom 130 different countries/territories thispast year. To increase our ability to serveour clients the best we can over the

Internet, we have partnered with TorontoRehab and the Ontario NeurotraumaFoundation to establish an online SCIe-resource centre. This website will housemedical, research and community resourcesto provide a rich experience for site visitors.

During 2008-09, we also worked withCPA National to provide aid anddevelopment work in Guyana. Thisopportunity enabled us to share valuablebest practices and knowledge about

disability issues and specifically issues facingpeople with SCI. We also assisted inproviding basic necessities to Amerindianpeople in Guyana, such as wheelchairs andwalkers.

As John Counsell did in the beginning, this past year we have relied on ourpartners, our collaborators, and people, likeyou, who have a vested interest in SCI. Wehave come together to ensure that CPAOntario continues to provide the very bestof programmes and services to our clients inthis province.

We do, indeed, get by with a little helpfrom our friends.

Anita KaiserI was injured in a car crash in 1996. While I was recovering at Toronto RehabI connected with Canadian Paraplegic Association Ontario and their rehabconsultants who helped me get thehousing, equipment and services thatI needed to reintegrate back intothe community.

I also connected with several other peoplewith spinal cord injuries who providedme with great advice and emotionalsupport.

When CPA Ontario formallylaunched their Peer Support ProgrammeI was immediately interested inbecoming a volunteer because Iknew how much it benefited mewhen I was first injured. Now,my husband and I bothvolunteer as peer and familysupport.

And these days I have aneven greater reason to beinvolved with CPAOntario’s Peer SupportProgramme to help showpeople who have recentlybeen injured that life isn’tover. They can still have awonderful fulfilling lifethat includes going toschool or work, playingsports, getting marriedand having children.

Abridged Financial StatementsIt is my pleasure to report on CanadianParaplegic Association (CPA) Ontario’sfinancial results for the year ended March31, 2009.

FundingSignificant progress was made this yeartoward the attainment of stable, diversifiedfunding, which is one of CPA Ontario’sfour strategic priorities.

Grant funding increased by 16% to over$7.3 million, primarily due to a further $1million investment from the Ministry ofHealth and Long Term Care. This newannualized funding was used to expandservice delivery throughout Ontario, including the regions of Mississauga-Halton, Peel-Dufferin and Waterloo-Wellington.

Donations and other public supportended the year at nearly $2.3 million, down4% from prior year. Last year’s financialshad included one-time revenue from thehighly successful “Dirty Dancing”fundraising event and revenue is down, comparatively. However, all year long, efforts were focused on developing andexpanding fundraising events incommunities across Ontario andstewarding relationships with ourcommunity and corporate partners.

Financial StatusTotal revenues for the year ended March31, 2009 increased by 10% to $9.8 million, the highest revenue for CPA Ontario sinceits inception. Operating expenses, primarily due to the expansion ofprogrammes and services, increased by acorresponding amount. Fixed assetpurchases – primarily leasehold

improvements and computers – amountedto $116,008 of which $15,013 wasinternally funded.

CPA Ontario finished the year with amodest operating surplus of $1,436.

SummaryOverall, CPA Ontario had an extremelysuccessful year. Fundraising activities arediversified and support from the Ministryof Health and Long Term Care remainssecure. Now, when the world is facingsignificant economic challenges, CPAOntario is healthy and strong and willcontinue to strive for excellence in allservices and operations. I am confidentthat continued support from government, along with our community and corporatepartners, will strengthen CPA Ontario’sfiscal health and financial stability toensure further advancement of ourmission.

On behalf of the Finance Committee, Iwish to express sincere thanks to ourvolunteers, donors and dedicated staff whohelped make this another great year forCPA Ontario. Your hard work, commitment and financial contributionstruly made a difference. I hope we maycontinue to count on your support in theyears ahead.

Wayne MacDonaldI began my new normal on Feb 8th, 1999. I was working on a roof and I fell14 feet to the asphalt pavement below. I sustained some pretty severe headinjuries and a burst T-12 vertebrae.

As I began to accept the new normal that was now my life, I did what I always did. I took theword “NO” as an unacceptable answer to obstacles I wanted to conquer. And I began to discovernew and wonderful experiences in my life. Canadian ParaplegicAssociation Ontario became an important vehiclefor me to get my message out to those who arenewly injured and veterans alike. I began to penarticles for the Outspoken magazine. Imentored many people through the years onliving life with a spinal cord injury. And I’vewritten songs about my experiences and thosearound me. I do appreciate the fact that CPAOntario has given me theopportunity to comeand send mymessage out tothose who arewilling tolisten.

“CPA Ontario has been one of the most importantorganizations for me. CPA Ontario definitely improves the

quality of life of the people I have treated for SCI. CPAOntario has enhanced my research productivity by providing

funds to the CPA SCI Laboratory at the Toronto WesternHospital where we are trying to find treatments for paralysis.

CPA Ontario is important for enhancing knowledgetranslation in the SCI field so that my patients are keptinformed of the latest developments with objective and

responsible reports. CPA Ontario is important to me becauseit partners with other organizations such as ThinkFirst toenhance programmes to prevent SCI. Thank you to CPA

Tracy AnthonyWhen a patient (and family) hear for the first time they have a spinal cordinjury there is generally shock and disbelief. They really can’t believe that thishas happened to them and it takes a while for this news to settle in.

There is usually so much going on in the first few daysand weeks post injury, they have surgeries to getthrough, potential complications like pneumonia, alot of people end up on a ventilator or with a trachin the beginning so communication becomesanother challenge. There is a lot of time to thinkabout what has happened to them and what isgoing to happen to them and when they’re readyI start to introduce the idea of Peer Support.

I’ve worked with the Peer SupportProgramme through Canadian ParaplegicAssociation Ontario for quite a few years nowand find their input into the recoveryprocess indispensable. I find thatsociety generally doesn’t have areal picture of what it’s like tolive with a SCI. Many have noidea that they can actuallybe independent with aSCI and to have theopportunity to speakwith, and becomeconnected with, anindividual who hassurvived and flourished istruly a gift.

The individuals at CPAOntario who I have had thepleasure of working with havealways been professional, knowledgeable, open, and mostof all, kind.

Leslie LamI am a pharmacist owner of Woods Pharmacy. Having been in a wheelchairfor several decades has blessed me with lots ofwonderful experiences and friendships.

As a volunteer with Canadian ParaplegicAssociation Ontario’s Peer SupportProgramme, I appreciate what a tremendousjoy it is to share these wonderful experienceswith those who have recently been injured. We may not be able to control the outcome ofour lives but we certainly can do our part tohelp each other to overcome our challenges ina positive manner.

When we realize what can beaccomplished with what we aregiven despite what has beentaken away, lives will betransformed.

Contributing towardstransformed lives leavesan everlasting impactwhich is far better thanworking forsomethingtemporal. It is forthis reason that Iam privilegedto be a CPAOntariovolunteer.
