HOLY REDEEMER PARISH ELLWOOD CITY, PENNSYLVANIA

Support all Catholic Education: “Great Beginnings last a lifetime.”

Thus says the LORD: “Just as from the heavens the rain and snow come down and do not return there till they have watered the earth, making it fertile and fruitful, giving seed to the one who sows and bread to the one who eats, so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; my word shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it.” Our First Reading today from Isaiah is a beautiful lesson of the providence and love of God. His Words are like hydration that comes to us in many different ways. Some we like and some are a little less likeable. But God uses all of those ways to bless our lives. Those words help us to understand the Gospel Lesson which is about planting and harvesting. While hydration and nutrition are necessary to all of us, the Word of God is equally important to our living. In Jesus’ day, people used a different method to plant crops. First, they scattered the seeds everywhere. Then, they turned the soil over covering the seeds. This is why Jesus says, some seeds fall on pavement, rocky ground, thistles and fertile soil. The seeds are given to every location, but not every location has the capacity to receive them. The Word of God is the seed that Jesus is sprinkling on every heart across the globe. The Word, like the rain and snow, is life-giving. But some hearts are closed to the Word. Some hearts are too cluttered making it impossible for the Word to take root. Some hearts are ready and willing to receive the Word, and it grows and bears fruit into eternal life. Lord, as I read Your word, please help me to know, love, and understand You

better. Help me to recognize how You want me to

apply Your Word to my life. Holy Spirit, may You enlighten my mind and enkindle in my heart a greater love for You and for others in my family and

in the world, as I read Your Word.

Amen.
