Welcome Everyone No matter what your past or present status is in the Catholic Church, your current family or marital status, your past or current religious affiliation, your personal history, age, background or ethnicity, you are invited, accepted and most welcome at St. Ferdinand Parish. We hope Christ will bring fullness into your life, and that we provide you with information and spiritual support. Strength Against Temptation The first Sunday of the season of Lent always includes a Gospel account of the temptation of the Lord Jesus in the desert by the devil. This year, the story is set against the backdrop of the first reading from Genesis, which recounts the very first temptation by the devil. That story is set in a garden of delight. The Gospel story is set in the desert. As believers, we know that temptation comes our way in our own gardens of delight as well as the deserts of our lives. As Lent begins, our attention is drawn to that temptation within each of us to become like God—we want control, power, and answers to all of life’s difficult questions. As communities of faith, we are given this season of repentance so that we can join our hearts with others on the difficult journey of conversion. We look to God and to one another for strength against temptation. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Parish Mission Saint Ferdinand Catholic Church is a large, vibrant parish that has a tradition of serving God’s people with the warmth of a small parish. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, we prayerfully seek to serve God by the way we worship, celebrate the sacraments, witness the Gospel, and serve one another. We are committed to live our Christian life as a community of hospitality, spiritual enrichment, and service through works of compassion, mercy, and evangelization. We are called to proclaim, teach and model the good news of Jesus Christ. We pledge our time, talent, and treasures for the fulfillment of our parish mission.

And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Please pray for the souls and family of Gene Manuel, father of Terry Manuel, and Henry Leczkowski, husband of Bernadine Leczkowski.

May their souls and the souls of all the faithfully departed, through the mercy of God, continue their journey to eternal life in the heavenly kingdom. Amen.

Almsgiving, Prayer, Fasting, and Temptation As we begin our season of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, the reading from Deuteronomy reminds us of our duty of almsgiving, that we “set [our offerings] before the Lord, [our] God, [and] shall bow down in [God’s] presence” (Deuteronomy 26:10). The reading from Romans refers us to our prayer, reminding us that “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart . . . For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:8, 13). These are comforting words, and encourage us to ask God for what we need and to aid us in our prayer. Finally, the Gospel of Luke shows us a fasting Jesus, who was tempted as we are, and who knows what it means to be human. Someone once said that temptation arises when you’re tired and weary, and the devil comes along and makes a perfectly reasonable suggestion. Jesus shows us that, with his help, we too can overcome our temptations, reasonable as they may sound. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

St. Ferdinand Parish Renewal A Journey from Darkness to Light

Please join us for our first night of Parish Renewal on Monday, March 2, at 7:00 pm in the church. Sister Marie Fidelis, from The Ark and the Dove, is our speaker. She will share her personal story of faith as we journey from the Darkness of Creation to the Light of the Resurrection. We look forward to welcoming Sister Marie Fidelis to our wonderful parish.

Our Parish Renewal will continue on March 9 as we welcome a parishioner from Holy Redeemer, St. Gregory, and St. Ferdinand to share their faith stories. On March 16 we will enjoy a beautiful evening of praise and worship with St. Ferdinand’s Praise Band and Deacon Don Pepe. Please join us! We look forward to sharing this special time with you.

Find Your Greatness

Don’t miss out on getting your tickets to the Allen Hunt Find Your Greatness event! The event is on Saturday, March 21, from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. Tickets are $25 each. We will have our final ticket sale weekend on March 7 and 8 after all Masses. You can also buy your tickets at the parish office.

Why We Hang Blankets in Lent It has been a tradition at St. Ferdinand Church to hang our beautiful Comfort Blankets during Lent. People may wonder why? The blankets portray, in physical form, the three great themes of the Lenten Season; prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. First and foremost, the blankets are lovingly made with prayer. The women who cut, decorate, and sew the blankets always remember the people who will receive the blanket and pray for them. Secondly, the women give of their time and fast from

another activity in order to make the blankets. Fasting is more than giving up food or something material, it is a giving up of our desires and putting others’ needs first. Third, almsgiving is a sharing of our resources of time, talent, and treasure. It can be a monetary donation to our favorite charity or our parish. But, the word “almsgiving” is rich in its essence and for some, giving their time or talent is giving alms. Alms are given through kind words and compassion. So, the Comfort Blankets hanging in our church are visible symbols of Lent and they remind us of the promise and hope of the Resurrection through their beauty and words. Living Stations

St. Ferdinand’s CROSSWALK Youth Ministry invites you to its Living Stations Prayer Service Sunday, March 1, at 7:00 pm in the church. Crew and readers are to report at 3:00 pm and cast at 5:00 pm.

Our youth will bring this inspirational prayer service to different churches throughout Lent. March 8, they will be at Holy Apostles, Baldwin; March 15 at Christ the King, Leechburg; March 22 at Mary, Mother of God, Freeport; March 29 at St. James, Sewickley; April 5 at St. Bede, Point Breeze; and April 10 (Good Friday) they return to St. Ferdinand.

Panorama of the Old Testament

The Tuesday evening Bible Study group will begin a four part series, Panorama of the Old Testament, on Tuesday, March 10, at 7:00 pm in the Upper Room. This study surveys the variety of books found in the Old Testament, uncovers interwoven themes, the background of familiar characters, and God's overall plan of salvation. The program is from Little Rock Scripture Studies.

The DVD presentations are by Stephen J. Binz, a biblical scholar, award-winning author, and popular speaker. He studied Scripture at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and Jerusalem, and has developed dozens of books and programs in biblical theology and spirituality.

If you have questions you may contact Kathy Bachik at 724.776.1357 or [email protected]. New members are always welcome. Please consider joining.
