Geophysical surveys

• 1968: more than 1,200 kilometers of seismic profiling was carried out in the East China and Yellow Seas by the US Government with participation by CCOP geologists

One of the most significant of CCOP’s early publications

5

Regional geoscientific studies

• 1970’s: Initiative in enhancing the hydrocarbons programme by study of pre-Tertiary sediments

• 1972: “Studies of East Asian Tectonics and Resources”– Joint CCOP-IOC Working

Group– 6+4 regional transects were

proposed; the studies of 4 were compiled published

Digital Compilation of Geoscience Maps• Magnetic Anomaly Map of East Asia• Geotectonic Map of East and Southeast Asia• Geologic Map of East and Southeast Asia• Composite Map of Tertiary Sediments Offshore

Institutional Capacity Building (ICB-CCOP1)• 2005-2007• 2 cross-border case studies• 4 working meetings• 3 field Study Trips• 4 workshops• 5 IES Basin Modeling Software Licenses• 5 postgraduate grants• 4 training Courses + Expert Visits• 1 thematic Seminar• 5 dissemination seminars• Impacts:

– The information, knowledge and experiences are shared, technologies are transferred

– The new connections and effective communicating mechanisms are set up

– The cooperation in this region is promoted CASE STUDY AREA 2

Song Hong-Yinggehai Basin Case Study

• Choose regional seismic sections • Choose wells• Agreed on horizons to be mapped• Sharing data

Sharing knowledge Cooperation, Collaboration Produce joint output

Observation:• Chinese scientists

have deep knowledge about the upper section (Pliocene)

• Vietnamese scientists tend to pay more attention to the lower section (basement)

These knowledge when shared can contribute to the better understanding of the whole formation

Joint Cambodia-Vietnam-Danida-CCOPGeological Field Trip and Workshop

Inspired by the success of cross-border case studies in ICB-CCOP1, the ENRECA project, bilaterally supported

by DANIDA to Vietnam, had organized the first ever cross-border field trip 08-15 March 20078-9/3, In Vietnam

and 10-15/3 in Cambodia

Cross the border

Observation

• Geological development is borderless

• So is our geological thinking

Coordinating Committee for GeoscienceProgrammes in East and Southeast Asia (CCOP)

We found somethingcommon:limestone sandstone

We found somethingdifferent:More mudstones In Cambodia side

We may observe upper section in Vietnamand lower section of the same formation in Cambodia

To add and share knowledge and experiences will give better understanding of the whole formation

Other successful cross-border cooperation in the region

1. South East Asia Supertie (SEAS-95), ASCOPE

2. China-Philippines-Vietnam on joint survey in Spratly Islands

3. China-Vietnam joint study in Gulf of Bacbo

4. Malaysia-Thailand Joint Development in Malay basin

5. Malaysia-Vietnam Joint Development in Malay basin

6. Intra-CCOP investmentsEtc.

South East Asia Supertie (SEAS-95)

• First time major regional seismic well tie in SEA

• Co-operative project between Petrovietnam, MIGAS, Petronas and PGS Nopec

• 9,064 km of 2D seismic lines tie 94 wells in 7 important petroleum provinces of SEA, like Malay, Penuy, Sarawak, West Natuna, East Natuna, Nam Con Son and Cuu Long basins

• An interpretation report was prepared

Generalized steps in a cross-border case studies

Knowledge sharing, and experience sharing

Collaboration

Final product

Data sharing

Set common target

Coordinating Committee for GeoscienceProgrammes in East and Southeast Asia (CCOP)

What we have learned?

The biggest challenge is setting up common

target and data sharing

The target based on not only common

scientific understanding but also

common interests, common trust

Critical factors are common understanding,

mutual respect, common interest, common trusts,

We are more a family than an organization

Concluding remarks

• Spirit of CCOP is Cooperation, Collaboration and Coordination

• CCOP geologists had brought this spirit into many of their activities

• Today again this spirit to be shown in the cross-border case study of the EPPM
