The April meeting was such fun and it seemed

everyone enjoyed learning new tricks and techniques.

The April business meeting was productive as we

were able to update three policies and procedures to

reflect our current practices with workshops and

membership.

The Make-and-Take sessions continue to be

productive and fun.

I have been busy gathering my UFO’s and precutting

for the retreat in May. Margaret Wolfe puts in a lot of

time and work ensuring our retreats are a success!

Thank you, Margaret, for doing this for our Guild.

See you all at the next program meeting and happy

quilting!

Penni Barger, President

From our Vice President

I hope everyone had fun and learned

something new at Quilt College during

our April program meeting.

For our May program meeting, we

have our own Janice Skiles speaking

on “My Journey Through Quilting.”

Thank you Janice!

In June we’re looking forward to

having Sandra Mollon come! Sandra

does art, traditional, appliqué,

landscape, and thread-painted quilts.

She also dyes fabric which she uses in

her quilts. To learn more about

Sandra, go to

www.sandramollonquilts.com to see

what all she has done! Sandra will give

a lecture called “Adapting an Image for

an Art Quilt” and then give a workshop

the next day at McHenry Bowl called

“Dogwood Blossoms,” which is a

turned edge appliqué class. The

appliqué can be finished by hand or

machine. Sandra will also be teaching

beading and inking for this class. Be

sure to sign up for her class at the next

meeting!

Also in June, we have added a free-to-

members Saturday class at McHenry

Bowl. This will be Linda Cover’s “Care

of Your Featherweight” class on June

23 from 9 am-3:30 pm. You can sign

up for this class at a meeting with your

$40, which you will get back when you

attend the class.

In July we have Joy-Lily coming! She

will be lecturing on “101 Quilts Later.”

The following day she will be doing a

class on “Felted Vessels.” You can

read more about her at www.joy-

lily.com. I’ll have sign-ups for her class

at the next meeting!

Education Thank you, Tricia, for showing us how value can play

dynamically with blocks as you change the values in

the same block. The results were so different!

Upcoming Short Subjects:

May - Shelley Dameron will show us how "angle play"

affects the blocks she makes.

June - Louise Nelson will follow up on her scholarship

class.

July- -Paddy Shopher will give us all the dos and

don'ts to putting binding on a quilt!

We also had the drawing for the new sets of $75

scholarships and the following members won:

Anita Hay, Don Johnson, Judy Pallotta and Teresa

Seifert. Congratulations to all. Here is what you need

to do:

Select a class you are interested in taking. This may

be at a quilt shop, at quilt shows, Guild workshops or

online. After a reasonable time please, check with me

and book a time you would like to present a short

subject and share what you have learned. At that time

you will receive your scholarship money. And so, we

keep learning and learning from each other.

Hot August Nights Challenge

It’s time to get ready for our Hot August Nights

Challenge! This year we’re going to challenge

everyone to make a block for Blocks on the Move and

donate it at Hot August Nights. Sometimes Blocks on

the Move are displayed in a place a second time so

the project could use some new blocks to display.

Specifications for the blocks: Blocks should be 16 to

16 1/2 inches squared, layered, quilted and bound. It

must have a two-inch sleeve on the back. A label on

the back should include the name of the quilter or

maker and quilter, their city, state, and date. There

will be prizes based on following the directions and on

the votes from the attendees.

So, let’s all have fun, get creative and in the process

make more mini-quilts for Blocks on the Move!

Member Projects Challenge 2018—“Our Roots”

Whether we are from the central valley of California

or from another continent, we all have a unique

setting, era, and family that impacted us in our

formative years. Within CCQ are many members who

were not born near here. We all have stories to tell

and interesting backgrounds!

This challenge will give you the satisfaction of

depicting your ‘roots' in a wall quilt. Consider your

upbringing and the childhood influences that are a

part of your life today. Think about what influenced

your early years, such as the economics of the day,

privilege (or lack thereof), cultural heritage, food and

customs, and how and where your parents worked in

order to provide for you. Maybe you can look through

old photos to get ideas or research the town you lived

in to get a fresh view of the local history. Try

reminiscing with a sibling for inspiration.

Please don’t discount this opportunity because you’re

a traditional quilter, as there are many quilt blocks

and motifs that represent a geographical region or

cultural group. Start Googling and think outside the

box. Every member who accepts this challenge will

provide a short written explanation or interpretation of

the quilt, so we all can better understand and

appreciate your piece.

Specifications:

• Due Date: October 9, 2018

• Quilt Construction Technique: your choice

• Size Restrictions: between 500 and 1,000 square

inches (height x width)

• Orientation: your choice

• Edge: your choice - binding or faced

First Exhibit Venue: January 19-20, 2019—CCQ Quilt

Our last Make-and-Take was so much fun:

• Linda Patterson taught us to put in a zipper by

making a bag- so many really cute bags were

made. Can’t wait to see some of them turned in

for the Boutique.

• Teri Harman brought her Cricut machine. We cut

out so many tumblers to make into table runners.

She also handed out a lot of pre-cut kits. These

will be a big hit at our show.

• Cindy Thompson turned it up with her dress form

pin cushions. Boy, was she prepared with all the

extras she brought to make them. I’m sure they

will sell out.

Upcoming Make-and-Takes:

• May 15 at the McHenry Bowl from 9:00 until 3:00

we will be making quilt-as-you-go placemats and

table runners along with baby bibs. Those of us

who are going to the Healdsburg Retreat will also

be having a Make-and-Take; we will be making

aprons. Margaret Wolfe will be including our

supply list in your letters.

• June 16 at McHenry Bowl from 9:00 to 3:00. We

will be making chicken pin cushions, luggage tags

and designer towels.

• July 21 at McHenry Bowl from 9:00 to 3:00

I still need ideas and volunteers to teach a Make-and-

Take. Please let me know if you can help out. Items

made will be sold at our show, and we want and we

all want to make this a success.

Thanks

Quilt Show Boutique—Make-and-Take Sessions 2 and 3

On Mother's Day, May 13, 2018, the Carnegie Arts

Center of Turlock will host a tea party, arts and crafts

sale and special quilt program in conjunction with its

current exhibit, “Art Quilts: Work by Members of

Studio Art Quilts Associates.” The gallery opens at

noon at 250 N. Broadway in Turlock. From 2:00 –

4:00 pm, four of the featured artists will present a

gallery talk about their work as quilt artists.

Among the quilters whose work is displayed are

pieces by CCQ President Penny Barger, and Guild

members Teresa Seifert, Cathie Hoover and Cindy

Thompson. Sixty-six quilts are hung on the walls and

18 three-dimensional fiber works are mounted on

pedestals. Admission to the exhibit is $5.00, free on

the first Friday of the month and free to Carnegie

members. The exhibit closes May 27, 2018.

Carnegie Show—SAQA

Once again, CCQ will present “A Celebration of Fiber

Arts” at the Mistlin Gallery in downtown Modesto.

Everyone in CCQ is welcome to enter her or his

original quilts or other well-done textile creations. Our

exhibit will be displayed for four weeks from July 10

through August 3. There is a fee of $10 on each

entered item (or three for $25), and the gallery

receives a percentage of anything sold. Entry forms

will be available at every CCQ meeting through

June 12, and will be on the Mistlin Show page of our

website. The forms are due by Friday, June 15.

Also, mark your calendars on July 19 when the Third

Thursday Art Walkers will be strolling into our exhibit.
