  • Honoring Those Who ServedHonoring Those Who ServedHonoring Those Who ServedHonoring Those Who Served On November 11 we will be honoring veterans. We will begin by offering special intentions for them at our Friday morning mass. Later in the day we will be walking to the Veterans’ Memorial (on Water Street) for their 11am memorial service. Parents, veterans and anyone who would like to pray for those who have served our country are all welcome to join us at either or both event.

““““Flashback Friday!Flashback Friday!Flashback Friday!Flashback Friday!”””” Are you, or do you know, a Holy Cross alum who would be interested in having your/his bio featured on “Flashback Friday” on our Facebook page? Please contact Mrs. Leslie DeMeulenaere ([email protected]) for more info or to submit a bio.

Vision and Hearing ScreeningsVision and Hearing ScreeningsVision and Hearing ScreeningsVision and Hearing Screenings The St. Clair County Health Department will be here on Wednesday, Nov. 2 to perform vision and hearing screenings. Students in grades K, 2 and 4 will have their hearing screened, and those in grades 1, 3, 5 and 7 will have vision screening. If your child is in a grade that is not scheduled for screening and you would like him/her checked, contact the school office. (Likewise, if you prefer your child NOT be screened, let us know that, as well.) If your child is under care for either hearing or vision issues, please notify the school office so that we can let the technicians know. Students who wear corrective lenses (glasses or contacts) should be tested wearing those lenses. Please be advised that the audio-meter’s headphones have magnets with fairly large field gradients which may cause risk for unwanted pressure regulation changes in implanted programmable shunts. If your child has an implanted digitally programmable shunt or other medical device that contains magnets, it is imperative that technicians are made aware of that fact.

    VG’s “Direct Your Dollars”

SpartanNash stores (including VG’s here in Marine City) have begun a new fundraising incentive for schools called “Direct Your Dollars.” All you have to do is save your original store receipts and get them to the school office! You can also turn them in at church, in the box in the vestibule. (Please be advised that the ENTIRE receipt needs to be turned in!) Thank you!

AuctiAuctiAuctiAuction Donation Yet?on Donation Yet?on Donation Yet?on Donation Yet? As you recall from your registration contract, each K-8 Holy Cross family is required to contribute an item to our auction by the end of November. With end-of-summer sales wrapping up and holiday sales on the horizon, it’s a great time to find a cool item at a good price. The committee is hoping families will put together “camp”-themed baskets—and there is an incentive to find something really appealing: the family basket that gets the most “votes” at the auction will earn its donor a $100 Meijer gift card. This year’s Auction will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2017 right here in our Activity Center. The night will include a traveling dinner provided by local restaurants, an open bar, lots of raffles (including the famous and popular Dessert Raffle) and great items to bid on in both silent and live auctions. The Auction committee is hard at work finding great items! Among the treasures we already have are an original oil painting from a West Coast artist, a dorm refrigerator, a patio set, numerous kitchen appliances, an iPad2Air and an autographed Dylan Larkin jersey! Did you know…last year’s Auction not only provided all of our 2

    th

graders with those cool new Chrome-books but also saved each of our families approximately $400 in tuition? The Auction is a TON of fun and benefits a great cause: our kids. For more info, contact Auction Chair-person Pam Dezsi at [email protected] or the school office.

  • Student Highlights Every month the teachers will introduce you to some of their students. The first students “highlighted” this year include: Preschooler Ethan Barks, who is a new student this year. He is in our 3- and 4-year-old class. Ethan loves trains. His favorite it Thomas! Ethan enjoys playing trains and playdough with his friends. He also enjoys snack time and picking out of the “Treasure Box.” Charlotte Arpan is a returning 4-year-old. Charlotte enjoys doing puzzles, drawing/coloring, looking/listening to books, and doing projects with “Miss Anna.” Charlotte’s friends enjoy her companionship and big smile. Kindergartner Paige Arlow’s favorite food is macaroni and cheese. Her favorite color is pink. She enjoys watching TV. Something special about Paige is that she helps her mom. Paige is a hard working, responsible student and she’s made a lot of new friends this year! Daniel Pelz’s favorite food is pizza. His favorite color is blue. He loves to go deer hunting. When Daniel grows up, he wants to be a paleontologist. Daniel always tries his best. He has a big heart, and he would do anything to make his friends feel better. Evan Jacobs is a wonderful friend to everyone in his fourth grade class. Evan is a very smart boy who loves to help others. In class he is eager to volunteer for classroom jobs, to read, and to help out in any way he can. Evan has a great sense of humor, too! He is always playful and fun. Outside of school, Evan plays baseball. He enjoys playing on a Little League team and getting to the batting cages in his free time. Not only does he love Little League, but he enjoys MLB as well! Fifth grader Allison Kuzera is a confident, intelligent young lady who has the ability to digest the situation and seek all possible solutions. She is helpful to others and eager to participate in class discussions. I can see Allison achieving any goal she sets her mind on!

Rebecca Goulette is a wonderful young lady with a great sense of humor and a ready smile. Her intelligence and determination help her to focus on the task at hand. Rebecca strives to overcome any challenges that get in her way. Seventh grader Grace Govier-LaParl likes to be called “Gracie” and is very energetic. She enjoys participating in dance and running track. Gracie also has lots of pets—a cat, several dogs, a horse, and a pet guinea pig. She is a great baker and is even thinking of being a professional baker some day. With all this going on, Gracie brings a lot of excitement to the seventh grade. Jack Maben is an eighth grade student who has attended Holy Cross since preschool. Jack would like to be a car salesman when he gets older. Jack loves spending time outdoors. He wants people to remember him for his sense of humor and his random acts of kindness. Jack loves Holy Cross because of his friends, teachers, class sizes and individualized learning. Jack’s favorite subjects are history and science. I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching Jack, and he has put a smile on my face throughout these last few years.
