Hayfield Daylily Garden- Oshawa Valley Botanical Garden-OVBG

The presenters today represent a public interest in horticulture

The Oshawa Garden Club-Barb North Brooklin Horticulture Society Canadian Daylily Association-Faye Collins and William Slute former Manager of Parks and currently President of WLSGreenspace Solutions Bill has volunteered his time to coordinate this project

Our goal is to bring this one of a kind collection of locally hybridized daylilies to the OVBG The breeder and grower of this unique collection is Henry Lorrain Faye Collins past president of the Canadian Daylily Society will provide an overview of Hayfield Daylilies and their contributions to the horticultural landscape Faye also represents the Brooklin Hort Society as a past president and brings their support to this project Barb who many of you know represents and brings support from the Oshawa Garden Club As you know the Garden Club has been a long time supporter of OVBG and contributed financially to the Peony Garden gazebo

It is fitting to present this proposed daylily garden project to you today following on the footsteps of another successful Peony Festival

Q Will the daylily collection create the opportunity for a Daylily Festival

A It certainly will and the basis for that festival has been in place for many years as Hayfield held their annual Daylily Festival at their home farm in Orono for many years This festival would occur in late July and not unlike the Peony Festival will attract several 1000 residents and visitors to OVBG to view the spectacular flower show

Hayfield created a very successful business selling the daylilies they breed The current collection being donated to OVBG has a retail value of $8000 - $10000

The Daylily Garden is proposed to be installed on the east side of the Oshawa Creek directly across from the Peony Garden and in the location of the current raised wood planters and wood pergola These structures were built in the early 1980s as part of the first phase of the Kinsmen Valleyview Gardens The wood structures have deteriorated and have reached the end of their lifecycle Keeping the OVBG Master Plan in perspective the proposed daylily garden fits the intended design concept The daylily garden will join the Peony Garden the Rockery Waterfall and the Memory Garden as a significant garden feature and continue to build on the success of OVBG

Q Will the proposed daylily garden increase the maintenance requirements for OVBG

A The proposed garden when design and built to industry standards will be less annual maintenance than the annual flower beds currently located in this area Perennials such as daylilies do not require the growing planting and regular maintenance and watering that annual flowers do

Notwithstanding that benefit City Council must consider in future budgets a commitment to increase the maintenance resources to OVBG The current staff is doing a stellar job but are stretched with time and abilities to maintain OVBG to the standard this garden requires and will continue to require as it matures

Q Is there an opportunity for partnerships and volunteer support in maintaining the new daylily garden

A Yes there is and that partnership has already committed to the digging and healing in of the daylily collection on June 26 and 27 It is hoped that volunteer commitment will continue with the planting of the daylilies in the garden upon its construction

This volunteer commitment represents an additional contribution of time materials and equipment with a value of $5000 +

Q Is there a design for the proposed garden

A The team has a conceptvision for the garden The garden concept not unlike the Peony Garden will feature a unique metal art shadeseating structure built by James Pronk The garden would be designed to allow for cost effective maintenance accessibility and seasonal character and colour A team of volunteer professional will work with city staff to finalize the design

The budget for the proposed garden has not yet been finalized and will certainly require a final concept to do so The project team is anticipating a budget of $100000 to $150000 including the contributions noted to date and city staff time The design will be flexible in nature and will accommodate available funding

The City of Oshawas endorsement and financial commitment will assist the team in pursuing further partnershipssponsorships and fund raising opportunities

The project team is requesting the Community Services Committee and City Council to endorse the proposed daylily garden and Hayfield Collection for installation at OVBG in 2016 A financial commitment would be appreciated and would assist the team in pursuing additional funding however we do understand the budget process and would asked that the proposed OVBG Hayfield Daylily Garden be included in the affordable projects within the 2016 Capital Budget Any opportunity to approve funds early in the process will assist the team in meeting the projected design and budget

The daylily is a perennial plant of the genus Hemerocallls which translates to beauty for a day Each blossom has only one day in which to reach perfection However since there are many flower buds on each stem a mature daylily plant will bloom over a period of several weeks Daylilies are often referred to as the perfect perennial They are one of the most trouble-free plants for todays gardener

Membership In the ODS allows you to attend all club meetings plant sales garden tours receive a regular newsletter and to participate in an email discussion forum The club provides members with access to some of the newest daylilies introduced by major hybridlzers from across North America

Our monthly meetings are held at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington In April or early May we host the annual Can-Am Classic which is a day-long program featuring guest speakers slide presentations plant auctions and sales Our Annual General Meeting and Fall Classic is held the third Saturday in September which again features presentations by guest speakers and the opportunity to obtain plants not found anywhere else There is also an end of peak bloom picnic usually the second Saturday in August with a member plant swap great food and camaraderie

Our meetings keep us abreast of the latest and greatest In daylily hybridizing and collecting It is also an opportunity to meet other gardeners from your region who also share a passion for daylilies Come and join usll
