The Last Dances at the Hangar Carolina Shag Club begins its ‘Goodbye’ to The Runway Café

On June 10th The Hangar at Runway Café hosted the CSC Vinyl Party for the last time. The party, with attendance made of mostly Carolina Shag Club members was held in good weather and moderate temperatures considering this time of year. Members visited before music started as shown in the upper-left photo. Dancing and more visiting is shown in the remaining two photos.

    Photos by Skip Watkins

An often modest crowd, typical of the one shown in the photo above contributed to The Hangar announcing that Carolina Shag Club dancing would end after the last dance on June 28th. Some members cited the lack of liquor drinks being unavailable and no air conditioning as factors that kept them from visiting the business more often. At the same time, neighboring club’s visitors complimented the location citing that the dance floor was of considerably better quality than the ‘sports bar’ location their club was calling home.

In spite of the outcome, numerous club members expressed their appreciation to Mike Bliss and The Runway Café for their efforts in trying to make the location suitable for CSC dancers.

    Carolina Shag Club Happenings…

The Carolina Shag Club board met on Thursday, June 22nd at the Pelham Road Library to discuss the club’s business.

Among items reviewed was the need for a new dance place to call ‘home’, next year’s annual charity fundraiser and tactics to be used in submitting a proposal for the 2019 ACSC Summer Workshop in Greenville, S.C.

After the board meeting on June 22nd, a number of board members went on to visit “Craft and

Barrel”, a gastro pub located near Wade Hampton High School. Members line danced, visited with each other, sampled the food and discussed the location. Pictured upper right is Ann Fulbright belting out a karaoke song.

Camp Courage residents received a shag lesson from Carolina Shag Club members on June 27th. Camp Courage is one of Carolina Shag Club’s two charities, the other charity being the Ellen Taylor Foundation for Junior Shaggers.

Back Row, left-right: Wayne Brockman, Nancy Brockman, Mark Gordon, John Wilson, Mary Ellen Fisher and Dan Ellington.

After having dinner with the children attending the camp, shag club members gathered to start teaching steps. Starting off with teaching a basic shag step (upper left) is CSC President, Dede Ward (distant center) along with other Carolina Shag Club members. They typically go through a basic step with a 6-count beat. Pictured upper right is Brenda Ellington leading a group of children as they practice the steps they’ve just seen.

The Hangar’s Final Night for Dancing Carolina Shag Club Will Begin Search for Another Location to Dance

The last evening of dancing at The Hangar started with friends greeting each other and enjoying dinner while watching the airplanes take off and land. During the evening the airport was also ‘buzzed’ by a military style Lakota helicopter. Photos by Skip Watkins

Later in the evening the crowd finished up with shag dancing and the occasional line dance. Billy Waldrep, a CSC regular was the DJ for the final night at The Hangar.

A little boy was in a cemetery with his mother. “Mom,” the boy asked, “Do they ever bury two people in the same grave?”

“Of course not, dear.” replied the mother, “Why would you think that?”

“The tombstone back there said, ‘Here lies a lawyer and an honest man’.”
