from the Head of School

Bridging the Gap

Now in my third year as Head of George Stevens Academy, I feel once again energized as we pursue our goal of being an excellent and distinctive school, a model of what a Town Academy might be. As our mission states, we are committed to providing the best, most challenging, and useful education to all of our students, both the 269 residents from our local towns, and our 40 international and domestic boarding students.

We offer an exceptionally broad and deep curriculum, both in the traditional classroom setting and beyond. This array of courses, and enrichment opportunities such as Independent Study and Alternative Course Contracts, would not be possible if we

depended on tuition revenues alone. It is indeed only through the support of the Annual Fund and other generous gifts to the school that are we able to bridge the gap between the least we can do and the most we aspire to do for our students.

In this Annual Report, we thank the hundreds of individuals—alumni, family members, and friends—as well as many businesses and organizations, who supported GSA last year. Without your support, we could not be the school that we are. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of our students.

George Stevens Academy is an independent high school on the coast of Maine. The Academy is a caring educational community committed to meeting the needs of each local and boarding student with a challenging, comprehensive academic and experiential program that fosters the pursuit of knowledge, inspires creativity, develops self-reliance, and prepares graduates for a purposeful life in a changing world.

Graduation 2017

Currents 2017 | 4

On June 18 Head of School Tim Seeley and Board Chair Marion Morris awarded diplomas to ninety-one graduating seniors, GSA’s Class of 2017. The weather was lovely and the front lawn was packed with parents, families, and friends.

Valedictorian Morgan Dauk, daughter of Peter and Tiffany Dauk of Sedgwick, connected the basketball acronym “BEEF” to life lessons she learned while at GSA: Balance, Eyes, Elbows aligned, and Follow through. Find balance in your life, keep your eye on the goals you’ve set for yourself, position yourself to succeed, and follow through with determination.

Salutatorian Maya Pelletier, daughter of Stan and Kathy Pelletier of Ellsworth, meditated on the humbling experience of hiking Katahdin: “It doesn’t matter if you are an artist, an engineer, a fisherman, a scientist, a mechanic, a soldier, a teacher—we all have moments where we feel wonder, purpose, connection, intensity, and appreciate an exceptional moment in life for what it is.”

First Honor Essayist Yvonne Rogers, daughter of Horatio and Gaye Marie Rogers of Penobscot, went for the bottom line: “If you love something, do it. It doesn’t matter if you feel like an outcast or are afraid at first. Don’t make excuses. You belong where your passion is, so be brave and follow it.”

And finally, Second Honor Essayist Alex Taylor-Lash, son of Tom and Holly Taylor-Lash, gave a hilarious speech on the subject of being mistaken throughout high school for his twin brother, Erik: “I’ve spent the best eight years of my life here at GSA, four as Alex and four as Erik.” But amid the very funny anecdotes about mistaken identities, Alex made a serious point: how to be an individual within a group, how to find the confidence to be different, to stand out, to be “unabashedly ourselves.”

Also speaking were Head of School Tim Seeley and former GSA English teacher and co-founder of Peninsula Metamorphic Arts and Learning Amy Grant. Amy spoke about risk and the need to dare: “Sometimes it will seem as though your only option is into the abyss – but if there is something worthy on the other side – there will be a bridge – even if you have to build it yourself. Be safe, my friends. Be humble. Be gracious and kind. Best of luck.”

Tim Seeley’s remarks were a critique of greeting card wit: Too bad I can Google what you spent four years memorizing. Tim reminded graduates—and us—that good education is never a matter of simple rote memorizing. “If we have done our job well, students leave with knowledge and skills. If we have been successful, they leave as well with attitudes and habits of mind that will enable them to live good and worthy lives, successful lives, lives that can make them happy and their communities — our communities — better.”

2017 Class GiftAs its parting gift to GSA, the senior class gave a set of original murals featuring local landscape scenes. The four murals, each 4 x 8 feet, served as a backdrop at graduation and were installed along the interior wall of the cafeteria in time for the start of school this year.

Students from each senior advisory group represented their class in coordinating the vote, planning, and execution of the class gift. Under the guidance of designer Julie Jo Fehrle ’85, the student committee decided on the design and scale of the murals. Art department chair Mariel Duym led her AP Drawing class in creating the final art scenes based on the committee’s vision.

The class funded construction and materials for the gift—including a commemorative plaque—through student contributions (see p. 15) and a Project Graduation donation from Darling’s Auto.

In presenting the class gift at graduation, the committee paid homage to “the original cafeteria murals, which we remember fondly from our freshman year.” The committee expressed hope that the new murals “will inspire those we leave behind to be creative, share their talents with others, and take pride in all that is unique about our school and our place in Maine.”

Samantha Politte, Chair of the Board of Trustees

Dear GSA Community,

This past June at our annual open board meeting, the Board of Trustees said goodbye to four retiring trustees. All four of these individuals served at least nine years and contributed far beyond our monthly board meetings.

Marjorie Olivari’s invaluable perspective as a caring parent and physician was always thoughtful and insightful. Jim Henry’s can-do attitude led him to roll up his sleeves and help, whether it was taking board minutes as clerk or installing windows in the Academy Building. Melissa Mattes’s attention to detail, work on board education, and her commitment to making sure that board processes were in place will have a lasting impact on board procedure and conduct. And, of course, Marion Morris’s strong and caring leadership has been steadfast. Marion’s vision and guidance always reminded the board to think strategically and act in the best interest of GSA as well as the students whom she cares so much about. Personally, I would like to thank Marion for being a wise and patient mentor.

The board also welcomed Sally Mills, GSA class of 1985, to the Board of Trustees. (See below for a brief bio.) Sally has already proven to be a tremendous asset to the board.

This year trustees, faculty, and staff will be hard at work achieving several remaining goals articulated in our 2013 five-year Strategic Plan, including addressing lingering facilities issues and refining curricular programs to better meet every student’s needs.

It is my honor to serve as Chair of the Board. With the legacy of past trustees and the addition of new ones, the board is well positioned to carry out the school’s mission and committed to work hard in the best interest of GSA as well as the students we serve. On behalf of the board, I wish the students, faculty, and staff a successful and fulfilling school year.

Sincerely,Samantha Politte

Sally Mills attended Blue Hill Consolidated School and is a GSA alumna Class of 1985. She graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Wellesley College and received an MPhil in Russian Language and Literature from the University of London.

Sally is a partner in the law firm Hale and Hamlin—Maine’s oldest law firm—and retains her license as a

solicitor of England and Wales. She is a past chair of the Maine Justice Foundation, The Bay School, and Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, where she served as a trustee for 11 years.

Sally lives in Blue Hill with her family. She and her husband, Justin Bennett, are the parents of Chris Bennett, GSA class of 2019, and Robbie Bennett, currently in 7th grade.

Marion Dillon Morris

In September 2017 the Board of Trustees of George Stevens Academy announced a gift from Brooklin resident Dorothy (“Dottie”) B. Hayes for the purpose of establishing the Food for Thought Fund. The income from the endowed fund will be used to help pay for school lunches for students whose families need financial assistance. Additional gifts to the Food for Thought Fund may be made by others.

Dottie Hayes has a lifelong love of the Blue Hill peninsula and a strong commitment to education. Her experience in schools informed her belief that a hungry student cannot be a focused learner. In acknowledging this gift, Head of School Tim Seeley noted, “Dottie’s extraordinary generosity helps ensure that every student at GSA has access to a nourishing meal during the school day. As a school we are committed to working with the whole community to address food security issues, and we will never refuse to serve lunch to any student. Dottie’s gift makes it much easier for us to carry through on that commitment. She has our deepest gratitude for a gift that truly makes a difference in students’ lives.”

A Generous Helping of Food For Thought

It has been my great privilege to serve first as a volunteer and then as a trustee at GSA over the past 14 years. I have learned much from so many in that time – from teachers, administrators, parents, students, and fellow trustees. I continue to believe passionately in the mission of the school and in its unique identity as one of the few remaining town academies in New England. I believe strongly in regular turnover in board membership and leadership – the impossible becomes possible when viewed through fresh eyes, and ideas never before considered come to the fore.

With Samantha Politte assuming the role of Chair, Tyler Knowles as vice-chair, and Tim Seeley continuing as Head of School, GSA has strong leadership going forward.

The experience of serving as Board Chair has been incredibly expanding and humbling at the same time.  Thank you for your support and for the opportunity to serve one of the most important institutions on the Blue Hill Peninsula.

Sincerely,Marion Dillon Morris

During her ten years on the Board, Marion Morris served on numerous committees, including Education, Strategic Planning, Finance, Head Search, Campaign Steering, Committee on Trustees, and Head Advisory Committee. Marion began board leadership as Vice Chair in 2012 and she has served as Chair of the Board since 2013. Marion provided strong and caring leadership, and remained on the Board an additional year to help guide the school through our recent Head of School transition. Marion’s consistent vision to think and act strategically has led the Board to make improvements and better serve as stewards of the school.

20th Reunion - Class of 1997

Class Agent Brooke E. Lawsing Miller ’97 reported on the 20th-year reunion she organized for the Class of 1997, held July 29 at the Lookout at Flye Point in Brooklin:

“Thanks to my fellow Class Agents and friends who helped to spread the word for our 20th-year reunion celebration. Alumni traveled from near and far, including from Massachusetts, Virginia, Colorado, and Canada. The Lookout offered a wonderful lobster dinner, and members of the class reminisced about their glory days with a 1997 soundtrack in the background. The reunion included a reflection time during which participants placed roses in the ocean in honor of those in their class who have passed away.

Class members and their families enjoyed a tour of GSA the day before our reunion. Music teacher Steve Orlofsky and retired science teacher Roger Bennatti gave tours of their classrooms and discussed recent events at the school. Tour attendees noticed the gymnasium, with its recently refinished and sparkling floor, as well as other improvements to the school.”

Pictured in the reunion photo (left to right): Alissa Davies, Brooke Miller, Laura Millay, Kate Tomkins, James Hildebrand, Emily Lewandowski Hildebrand, Claire Dibble, Ben Webster, Tarsha Astbury and Seth Bassler. Pictured in the school tour photo: Roger Bennatti welcomes Kate Wootten, Brooke Miller, and family members.
