Did you get a new Amazon Kindle e-reader as
a gift for Christmas?
How do you start?
You need to charge the battery. Tablets often do not come fully charged. First connect the supplied cable to the Kindle tablet. Connect the other end to the charger and finally plug the charger into a wall outlet. Do these steps in that order!
While you wait for the Kindle to charge, there
are other things on your checklist.
Do you already have an Amazon or Amazon Prime account? If so, you can move on to the next step. If not, you will need to establish an account with a password. You will need a credit card. An Amazon account is free (until
you buy something). An Amazon Prime account costs around $100/yr. You will need an email address and your billing and shipping addresses. A shipping address for physical items cannot be a PO Box. Setting up your account is easiest done from your home computer. One final requirement is that you be in an wi-fi hot spot. Most home computer internet modems supplied today are wireless.
Curtis Township Library is a 24/7 wi-fi hotspot.
Once your new Kindle is fully charged, power up the tablet and, from the home screen, tap the Menu icon and then tap Settings. Tap Registration and Household. Since you already have an Amazon account, tap that selection.
Enter your account information and tap Register. Your account name will appear on the
Kindle as the registered user. You’re all set!!
This is the easiest way to set up your new Kindle e-reader. It is not the only way. You could use the Kindle tablet by itself. While the process is the same, entering a lot of text information using the hunt-and-peck system of the built-in keyboard makes for errors that can be difficult to correct later. Remember, help is always available at the library. (This set of
instructions is optimized for the Kindle Voyage (7th Gen.), Kindle Paperwhite )7th Gen.) Kindle (7th Gen.) and Kindle
Paperwhite (6th Gen.).
For other Amazon Kindles, you can find specific instructions for your particular
model of e-Reader or Fire tablet by going to Amazon Device Support, typing “Registering a new Kindle” in the search box and choosing the appropriate set of instructions for your
model.
If you buy the Kindle yourself on your own account, all of this
is done by Amazon for you.
