Welcome to 2016 and our first CY Magazine of the year. We have big plans for the coming months and are already embracing some exciting changes in our business.
We have now officially opened the doors of our new Applecross office at 907 Canning Highway. It’s an area where we have experienced huge growth and as a result, our team there was quickly outgrowing its previous home in the village. The innovative new office has a capacity for 20 sales executives plus support staff, and we’re looking to grow and continue to drive strong results for our clients in this beautiful area of Perth.
I’m also very proud to announce that Applecross principal Steve Currie has been nominated for one of real estate’s highest honours - Principal of the Year in the Australasian Real Estate Results Awards, which will be
presented in Sydney next month.
Caporn Young is also in the running for the major title of the night - Agency of the Year - as well as a sweep of individual awards. Congratulations to Stefanie Dobro, Emma Powell, Craig Gaspar, Siobhan Micale, Sheridan Currie, Lucy Gibson and Patrick Heenan on their nominations. As most West Australians enjoyed the cooling effect of the Fremantle Doctor in the lead up to Christmas, Olympic hopeful Alistair Young was making use of the windy conditions with some final training sessions in his Laser Radial.
Alistair sailed warm up regattas in Melbourne and Sydney prior to Christmas after completing his Year 12 WACE exams. An unexpected extreme weather system that hit Sydney saw Alistair display excellent seamanship by managing to sail his Laser back to shore in a ‘white out’. He then continued to jump in a spare RIB and headed back out into the tempest to rescue other sailors suffering from hypothermia and a head injury.
The Cottesloe teenager then jetted to Langkawi to represent Australia in the Youth Sailing World Championships - and he sailed to victory, securing the gold medal before the competition was over.
His experience in Perth’s blustery conditions shined through early in the regatta, when Langkawi’s winds blew unexpectedly strong.
“I went to Malaysia hoping for strong winds but expecting light winds,” Alistair said. “It was a very pleasant surprise, as these are my favourite conditions.
“It wasn’t all smooth sailing though - the breeze tempered off and forced the young sailor to utilize different strategies. His efforts paid off, and Alistair went into the fifth
and final day of racing safe in the knowledge that his 21-point score was uncatchable.
“It was nice to relax and sail around - I was so stressed in the other races!
“It was a successful championship for the Australian Sailing Youth Team, who also won the Nations Trophy after Silver medals were secured by the team’s 420 sailors Nia Jerwood and Lisa Smith (also from WA) and the NSW-based SL16 crew.
Alistair credits his coaches Arthur Brett, Belinda Stowell and Tristan Brown for giving him the tools and motivation to get to the top.
“After finishing fifth in the competition last year, I wanted to better my position. My goal was a podium finish so the win feels amazing, words can’t describe it,” he said.
“My coaches have committed a huge amount of time and effort to my sailing and I can’t thank them enough. Fremantle Sailing Club and the Western Australian Institute of Sport have also been instrumental, as have my sponsors and my Mum and Dad - who are my most avid supporters!
“The 17-year-old who next year will be studying Engineering at the University of Western Australia, will now transition into the Olympic-standard Laser, which has the same hull but a larger sail.
“The big end goal is the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan, and a gold medal.”
