MADISON, S.D. (April 16, 2019)—The Dakota State University Trojan baseball team (3-27 overall record) looks

to halt their losing streak as they prepare for a mid-week non-conference doubleheader. The Trojans visit Morn-

ingside (Iowa) (20-13 overall record) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference. The non-conference doubleheader

was originally scheduled for 2:30 p.m., but has changed their starting time for the first game to 4 p.m. The games

will be held at Lewis and Clark Stadium—the home of Sioux City Explorers Baseball Club LLC (3400 Line Drive)

in Sioux City, Iowa.

Dakota State was unable to come up with a victory in the North Star Athletic Association conference action last

week. The Trojans dropped a pair of games at Bellevue (Neb.) on April 9, followed by a four-game series sweep

by Presentation (S.D.) on April 14-15 in Ralston, Neb.

Morningside went 1-3 record in the last four games in the Great Plains Athletic Conference play. The Mustangs

split a pair of games with Doane (Neb.) on April 14, falling short in eight innings 4-3 before bouncing back in the

second game for a 12-1 victory. MC was swept by GPAC’s conference leader Concordia (Neb.) by the scores of

9-5 and 8-4 on April 15.

Next Up: Dakota State is scheduled to play its final road non-conference game at NCAA Division I North Dakota

State on Tuesday, April 23 before returning home at Flynn Field for the final six games of North Star conference

play. The Trojans host No. 25-ranked Bellevue (Neb.) on April 24 and concludes the regular-season with a four-

game series versus Viterbo (Wis.) on April 27-28.

▪ Dakota State (S.D.) is seeking to halt their 15-game losing streak, with the last win coming on March 25 with a 4-3 victory over Valley City State (N.D.). ▪ The last time Dakota State and Morningside (Iowa) met in a non-conference meeting was on April 8, 2013 at Flynn Field. The Mustangs won by the score of 9-2 in DSU’s lone home game of the 2013 season. ▪ MC won the last three meetings with DSU, including a doubleheader sweep on March 4, 2008. The last time the Trojans defeated the Mustangs was on Feb. 11, 2007 with 3-1 and 6-3 victories at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. ▪ The Trojans are seeking for their first road win of the season, with the last road victory at Dickinson State (N.D.) on April 22, 2018. ▪ Dakota State will be taking a break from the North Star Athletic Association conference play this week. The Trojans won’t re turn to league play until April 24 versus No. 25-ranked Bellevue (Neb.). ▪ Top six teams in the North Star Athletic Association conference will advance to the postseason conference tournament in Valley City, N.D. on May 3-6. ▪ Marcos Alvarez produced three consecutive multi-hit games for the Trojans, extending his hitting streak to four games.

REMAINING NORTH STAR GAMES: Dakota State (S.D.) have six games remaining on their North Star Athletic

Association conference schedule. The Trojans are off from league play this week and will return back to confer-

MULTI-HIT GAMES: Marcos Alvarez had produced two hits in the last three games for Dakota State. He had a

total of seven multi-hit games this season. Samuel Drummond and Jerrett Plunkett each lead the Trojans with

nine multi-hits games. Jalen Boyd tallied a total of 20 multi-hit games during his four-year career at DSU.

NSAA BASEBALL POSTSEASON: The North Star Athletic Association baseball postseason tournament gets

underway on May 3 and runs through May 6. Valley City State (N.D.) will be the host of this year’s conference

tournament at Charlie Brown Stadium in Valley City, N.D.

2018 DSU TROJAN BASEBALL IN REVIEW BRUINS SWEEP TROJANS IN NSAA DOUBLEHEADER

Bellevue, Neb. (April 9, 2019)—The North Star Athletic

Association conference’s leader Bellevue (Neb.)—

receving votes in the NAIA Baseball coaches’ Top 25

national poll—outscored Dakota State (S.D.) 30-4,

cruising to a 13-3 and 17-1 doubleheader sweep at

Roddy Field.

Samuel Drummond hit a solo home run in the first game

of the doubleheader. Jerrett Plunkett went 2-of-3 at the

plate and scored a run. Adrian Butrimas hit a double,

single and drove in a run. Tanner Landman had a

double and an RBI.

Ryan Peterson took the loss on the pitching mound for

in the first game. Steven Suarez also worked in relief.

Marcos Alvarez had a single and an RBI for the Trojans in the second game of the doubleheader. Chris Burke,

Jalen Boyd and Plunkett each added a single.

Trey Randel recorded the setback after tossing two innings for Dakota State. Micah DeHarty, Andrew Dayton,

Max Luesebrink and Christian Sanchez also pitched in relief for the Trojans.

SAINTS TAKE FIRST TWO GAMES FROM TROJANS

Ralston, Neb. (April 14, 2019)—Presentation (S.D.)

cruised to a 19-2 victory in eight innings in the first

game of the NSAA four-game series at Orval Smith

Field. The Trojans’ late comeback fell short in the

second game by the score of 4-3.

Ryan Jackovich hit a double in the first game for DSU.

Alec Gannon, Samuel Drummond, Kyle Gosh, Marcos

Alvarez, Justin Odlum and Chris Hoeke each had a hit.

Noah Hammond had a single and an RBI. Burke

produced an RBI.

Adam Berryhill took the loss after working for 4 2/3

innings. Andrew Dayton, Logan Dexter, Matt Weichel

and Jared Urbach also pitched in relief.

The Saints took a 4-0 lead in the second game before the Trojans mounted a late comeback after scoring a run in

the last three innings. DSU was unable to convert their scoring chances in the final inning.

Alvarez was 2-of-3 at the plate with two singles for Dakota State. Boyd added a single and drove in a run Hoeke

added a double, single and scored two runs. He swiped one base. Burke, Drummond and Christian Sanchez

each hit a single.

Ryan Peterson recorded the defeat after working for 4 2/3 innings. Micah DeHarty tossed 2 1/3 scoreless in-

nings, yielding the Saints to one hit.

TROJANS FALL SHORT TO SAINTS

Ralston, Neb. (April 15, 2019)—Presentation

(S.D.) earned another twin-bill North Star sweep

over Dakota State (S.D.), holding on to 11-7 and 6

-1 victories at Orval Smith Field.

The Saints raced to a 10-1 lead before the Tro-

jans outscored PC 6-1 in the final three innings,

thanks to a five-run seventh inning explosion.

Keaton Hoeke finished the game by going 2-of-5

at the plate with a home run, single and an RBI.

Marcos Alvarez also went 2-for-5 with a double,

single and collected two RBIs Alex Gannon had

two singles. Chris Burke had a single and walked

twice. Samuel Drummond reached on base by a

walk two times. Kyle Gosh had a hit and an RBI.

Burke recorded the pitching defeat for DSU. Brett Sanchez and Max Luesebring also pitched in relief.

The Trojans took the first lead of the game in the final game of the four-game series, but could not overcome

Saints’ fourth and fifth innings to earn the victory.

Alvarez collected two hits and an RBI in the game for DSU. Burke, Jalen Boyd, Jerrett Plunkett and Drummond

each had a hit. Trey Randel recorded the loss, while Boyd tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings for the Trojans.

Geoff Schaff begins his third season as Dakota State

University Baseball Head Coach.

Prior arriving to Dakota State, Schaab served as the Head Coach, Associate Head Coach and Director of Baseball Operations with the Northern Virginia (NoVA) Fellowship of Christian Athletes travel (16-18 years old) baseball team, where his team rose from finishing 25th out of 26 teams in 2014 (2-17 overall record), to No. 8 the following season (19-14 overall record) and No. 2 in 2016 (19-8 overall record).

He was also a regular instructor at local and regional baseball camps to include NoVA FCA Baseball Academy and at Messiah College as a hitting coach and infield instructor.

Schaab played collegiate baseball at Edinboro University (Pa.) – formerly NCAA Division II – in what it recognized as one of the premier NCAA Division II conferences – the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. He was named a ‘Newcomer to Watch’ as an incoming freshman by Collegiate Base-ball Magazine in 2000 and started at second base and left field, finishing with a career .315 batting average. He only struck out 26 times in 409 career plate appearances.

Upon graduation at Edinboro in 2003, Schaab moved to Northern Virginia in 2004 and worked for four years as an Intelligence Analyst with the Defense Intelligence Agency. He then served as a Senior Sanctions Investigator with the U.S. Department of the Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control for seven years.

“I’ve had very good mentors and friends in the collegiate game to include NCAA Division I Head Coach Bruce Peddie (University of Kansas)" said Schaab. "I am very Passionate about wanting to coach these young men and further exicted about changing the direction and path of DSU Base-ball."

Geoff has an older brother Robert Todd Schaab, who played at NCAA Division I Youngstown State (Ohio) from 1998-99 and then at NCAA Division II Indiana University (Pa.) from 2000-02 (where they played against one another a total of eight times).

In his second season at DSU, the Trojans upset the #1 seed Mayville State Comets (RV) in the first round of the North Star Athletic Association baseball playoffs; marking the first win in DSU history in North Star tournament play.

Geoff is a native of Tonawanda, N.Y. where he graduated from Kenmore West High School. He currently resides in Madison, S.D.

DERRION HARDIE Assistant Coach

1st Season

Derrion Hardie is entering his first season as Dakota State's head assistant baseball coach

and recruiting coordinator.

"I am excited to become a DSU Trojan," stated Hardie. "My wife and I wanted to return back to our home state of South Dakota to be closer to family and this is the right opportunity. I have learned that vision, mission, core values and continually asking why we do what we do is what drives organizational excellence. Coach Schaab has an aggressive 'brick by brick' vision for building DSU Trojans Baseball into an eventual North Star Athletic Conference contender, a vision I believe in and am grateful that he has entrusted me to assist him with."

"DSU is innovative and provides a great academic setting that rivals private schools and costs significantly less," added Har-die. "Additionally, the DSU Athletics Master Plan is impressive and will significantly change the landscape of Trojans Ath-letics. DSU, Trojans Athletics and its baseball program has a motivating future that I am thrilled to be a part of! Brick by Brick…We Are Rising…Go Trojans!"

Prior to arriving at Dakota State University, Hardie was the head baseball coach at Ecclesia College (Ark.) where he was hired to lead the development of the baseball program that began play in 2013. Hardie pioneered the Royals to six consecutive winning seasons, post-season berths and executed a five-year plan to qualify for the NCCAA World Series which occurred in 2017.

Hardie engineered 175 wins in his six seasons as the head coach at Ecclesia. During that time, he produced five players that went on to sign professional contracts, five (5) All-Americans, eighteen (18) All-Region, twenty-four (24) All-Conference, two (2) Confer-ence Player-of-the-Year and two (2) Conference Pitcher-of-the-Year selections.

As the former head baseball coach at Northwestern College (Iowa), Hardie's teams finished at the top of the Great Plains Athletic Conference in team offense and defense. His Red Raider teams were most known for their offensive production that earned them NAIA national recognition in various team statistical categories, such as his 2003 team that finished 16th in the nation in team home runs (43). He additionally coached two All-Americans while at Northwestern.

Previous to his time at Northwestern, Hardie served as an assistant baseball/catchers and hitting coach at his alma mater, the University of Sioux Falls (S.D.).

In addition to his collegiate coaching, Hardie spent ten years as a highly successful high school head baseball coach in Minnesota and South Dakota. His teams qualified for the state tournament nine of his ten years, reaching the state championship game five times, winning two state championships and receiving two state Coach-of-the-Year honors. During his high school coaching ca-reer, Hardie coached 29 All-State Players and 46 All-Region Players and had 18 players sign collegiate national letters of Intent.

"Bringing Derrion on to the staff makes us immediately stronger of baseball team by adding proven veteran coaching experience," said Schaab. "His ability to successfully recruit in areas – specifically the South and Midwest – combined with his servant leader-ship attitude and transformational coaching style make him the exact type of coach DSU Baseball needs to continue growing posi-tively. We also look forward to implementing many of his hitting principles and philosophies into our offense, which furthers the 'chaos' offense that has been work in progress to date."

Hardie will also be the DSU Trojans catchers position coach as well as the team hitting/offensive coach.

Derrion, a native of Aberdeen, S.D., has been married to his wife, Lisa, for 24 years and they have three children: Sierra, Zach and Madisyn.

JOSH OK Assistant Coach

1st Season

Alma Mater: Illinois

Josh Ok is entering his first season as an assistant baseball coach at DSU. Ok also coaches tight

ends for DSU Football.

Ok was a graduate of the University of Illinois. He worked as a football student manager during his undergraduate years. He has coached at the NAIA level for 4 years.

“Dakota State University has been a wonderful place to work at and call home the last few years in my coaching career. I look forward to working with our DSU Baseball program and building a solid foundation for future success under Coach Schaab’s vision of ‘Brick By Brick’. My experience in football translates well to the team aspect the game of baseball demands to perform at a high level

year in and year out.”

For DSU Baseball, Ok will coach the Outfielders and serve as Head Coach for the Developmental (DV) Team.

He is a native of Libertyville, Ill. and currently resides in Madison.

DR. MICHAEL ROACH Assistant Coach

2nd Season

Alma Mater: South Dakota

Dr. Michael Roach is in his second season with DSU baseball as an assistant coach.

He originally joined DSU as an Instructor of Economics teaching at University Center in Sioux Falls. He is now on campus in Madison full-time as an Assistant Professor of Management in the Univer-sity’s College of Business and Information Systems.

Dr. Roach played his college baseball as a starting pitcher at Yankton College in Yankton, S.D., where he also played amateur baseball in the summers. He was an integral part of the develop-ment of Brandon Valley baseball as a coach, a board member, and most recently as the Director of Baseball Operations. He has coached from tee ball to high school, developed and taught winter

pitching and hitting camps, and helped over a dozen players achieve their dreams of playing college baseball.

“DSU has an unlimited future right now. Great things are happening on campus, both academically and athletically. Coach Schaab has a fantastic vision and plan for the future of this program and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of it.”

Originally from Yankton, S.D., Dr. Roach and his wife Debra have two children attending the University of South Dakota.
