Where has the time gone? da:ns festival turns 10 this year and it seems like only yesterday when we presented our first edition.

At da:ns festival, our sense of time shifts. As we watch bodies move on stage, or as we ourselves dance, time as we know it, is suspended, and we become attuned to time driven by the body and its unique rhythms in movement. Over the years, we hope the festival has given you several experiences and memories that have expanded your sense of movement, and opened you up to different expressions of dance.

The festival team has had the pleasure of creating this dedicated event, growing a myriad of platforms in our festival that support the development of dance. To encourage more people of all ages to try dancing, we have worked with Singapore dance studios to provide fun and easy dance lessons that everyone can enjoy both inside our rehearsal studio, outdoors along our waterfront and around Singapore. Last year, we welcomed over 28,000 participants to these sessions and the overall da:ns festival has doubled in audience size since it’s first year.

To support the creation of new dance works, da:ns festival commissions, co-produces and provides residencies for artists. This has led to long-lasting relationships with artists we deeply admire for their dedication and creativity, and enabled 23 new dance creations, the majority from Asian dance-makers. So this year, for our special 10th anniversary, we have invited several of these artists to celebrate this special occasion with us, some of whom are marking significant milestones in their own personal careers. We host the legendary Sylvie Guillem, who returns to da:ns festival with her final world tour before retiring from 35 years of dancing, while Singapore choreographer Kuik Swee Boon creates a work that brings together leading dance-makers in their 40s back to the stage. The festival would have not been possible without our supportive audience of dance lovers, the dance-makers who continually inspire us, our festival sponsors and partners who have shared our belief in the significance of dance in our lives, and our group of dedicated festival volunteers—the da:ns Kaki Ambassadors.

With deep gratitude to everyone—thank you for being part of 10 years of da:ns festival together.

Hello dear Friends and tangueros in singapore!

Tango legends is very happy to come to your country on the 10th anniversary of this exciting da:ns festival. We are thrilled that we will perform at one of the most beautiful and prestigious venues in the world, Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay.

We want to show you the love, passion and dedication we put in our work every day to present the best of the “Tango Argentino” in all its expressions. From the stage we want to communicate and share our dream, show you the real Tango.

We carry Tango in our skins, Tango is our identity as Argentinians, as “Porteños” (residents of Buenos Aires), but faithful to the origin of our city belonging to whoever comes for it; free and universal.

The thoroughness of the costumes and scenes unfolding create insurmountable frame to transport us back in the time and enjoy an unforgettable experience to re-live that time where all Buenos Aires was Tango…

We propose a journey through those glorious years in Buenos Aires when Tango was enjoyed and breathed in every corner of the city.

The sensuality present in each choreography is a living tribute to the Tango. The elegance and splendour are alive at every step of this dazzling show.

We invite you to find the true sound and feel of Buenos Aires with us.

Tango legends is a deep Tango trip, the opportunity to relax in the cadences and breathe with the Bandoneon, moan with the Violin, a unique dance beat, or simply the pleasure of understanding that Tango continues to be an instrument of perfect beauty, allowing us to create magic with music, voice and dance.

We hope that you will enjoy, like we do, this performance by the soul on the stage!

about tHe prograMMe

Feel all oF tango...

Our tango is proud and fatal, as long as the most audacious orchestra in this era plays strong notes, our tango will consist of several dance and music of love and passion. We bring tango from Argentina to caress your ears like a fond memory with melancholic chords.

The stage is the means by which we communicate with the audience. It implies an exchange full of meanings with the audience. “Dancing tango is to feel one is flying”. Tango legends is to enter an inner world where you can feel how the vivid sense of freedom and creativity becomes art.

The company dances, performs, listens, contemplates, inflames and takes tango out of the memories and brings it back onto the stage to show that legends are more alive than ever.

Most legendary orchestras such as D’Arienzo’s, Pugliese’s, Troilo’s, Piazzolla’s... will be present in their most famous pieces such as la Cumparsita, Gallo Ciego, Quejas de Bandoneón, libertango, not to mention the best voice of all times, the most powerful tango legend, our popular idol Carlos Gardel in pieces such as Por una Cabeza, mi Buenos aires Querido and the emblematic el día Que me quieras.

06

Every performed tango will reveal an agreement between the parties who speak the same language, know the same code, occupy a common space, with secrets that build a shared intimacy. Two bodies entangled in a connecting and fusing embrace. Knowing that dance, music and singing are considered modes of creative arts, we are mainly artists full of passion, love and absolute dedication to tango.

The beauty of tango is the secret of its intense seduction… if it is a good tango. “As for the dance, it is in the embrace where the mystery lies. That possibility of intimate communion that the embrace offers, is the secret of Tango.”

We are writing our own tango legends in the Tango Show now...

part i

CORAZONDE OROCOMPOSER: FRANCISCO CANARO

OPENING OF THE SHOWWHOLE COMPANY

It is the Company’s introduction. As the artists move, we see their different characters as they arrive at the Tango party along with musicians who playfully perform a beautiful waltz and thus the introduction takes place.

Here we bring you short solo performances. Dancers get to know one another and this gives rise to the group dance and the unmistakable voices of the singers whose presence and charm will seduce the audience with the outstanding instrumental performance by musicians who masterfully accompany the “Legends of Tango”.

DE PURO GUAPOCOMPOSER: PEDRO LAuRENzDANCERS: MARIELA & PABLO, SABRINA & JOSE, MANuELA & JuAN, MARIA SOL & LuCAS, VICTORIA & AGuSTIN, CINTIA & MARIANO

It recreates a fun party in which “Guapo” dancers and young women meet to bring happiness to their lives to the two-four time (Tango). Regardless of age or social status, they just want to dance and have a nice time.

They display picaresque (roguish) group sequences danced by lifelong friends that start several stories related with feelings.

MILONGUEANDOEN EL 40COMPOSER: ARMANDO PONTIERDANCERS: ROCIO & JuAN PABLO

FUERONTRES AÑOSCOMPOSER: JuAN PABLO MARINLYRICS: JuAN PABLO MARINSINGER: CRISTIAN CHINELLATO

It is simultaneously a sweet and sad song. It refers to a man’s grief because a woman left him. He thought he had a complete life until she decided not to come back.

INSPIRACIÓNCOMPOSER: PEREGRINO PAuLOSDANCERS: SABRINA & JOSE

Another excellent tango by Juan D’Arienzo. The man will ask the young woman to dance. They will show they love dancing. This couple will exhibit unique “cortes” and “quebradas” belonging to their own dance style. They carry in their veins Juan D’Arienzo’s unequalled rhythm. He dances for her. His dancing playfully seduces her.

LOCACOMPOSER: MANuEL JOVESDANCERS: VICTORIA & AGuSTIN

This performance is made by the true boyfriend and girlfriend of the group. The man, who considers himself the most elegant, will dance with a solid, straight and rather arrogant style. He and his charming woman will try and become the best dancers at the party.

POR UN CABEZACOMPOSER: CARLOS GARDELLYRICS: ALFREDO LE PERASINGER: CRISTIAN CHINELLATO

This tango is a world-renowned piece which has been performed in many Hollywood films such as Scent of a woman starring Al Pacino. Its lyrics tell the story of a typical Buenos Aires man who is a horse racing fan. Though he promises to give up gambling, his addiction proves stronger than his will.

POTPOURRIOF MILONGAS: MILONGA SENTIMENTAL COMPOSER: SEBASTIAN PIANALYRICS: HOMERO MANzISINGER: YAMILA FIGuERAS

This group dance is characterised by the counterpoint of couples. They will gaily show their agility in several dancing styles such as the reverse embrace and hip cadences which are typical features of the milonga rhythm. The men will make short sequences together and the ladies will be surprised by the skill and technique which will make them feel proud of their partners.

EL TORITO/ARRABALERACOMPOSER: ANGEL VILLOLDO / SEBASTIAN PIANADANCERS: MARIELA & PABLO, ROCIO & JuAN PABLO, JOSE & SABRINA, MANuELA & JuAN

EL LLORÓNCOMPOSER: JuAN MAGLIODANCERS: CINTIA & MARIANO

A nice and lively piece filled with freshness performed by the teenage couple whose skill, charm and rhythm will be witnessed by thegroup who will also let them know they arenot naïve any more.

QUEJAS DE BANDONEONCOMPOSER: JuAN DE DIOS FILIBERTODANCERS: MARIA SOL & LuCAS

The man will display his dancing elegance and leadership, and the beautiful woman will understand and follow all the sequences. In order to lead her to the very last second of the piece,he will take a breath for the sake of dancing tothis great tango with her.

MALENA FEMALE SINGER

COMPOSER: LuCIO DEMARELYRICS: HOMERO MANzISINGER: YAMILA FIGuERAS

Famous tango song written by Homero Manzi in 1941 which appealingly comes to show how sensitive and passionate the singing of our citizen music in a woman’s skin is. This is one of the most sung songs in the history of Tango and one of the tangos that gave rise to the legendary “forties”. It cannot be excluded from the legends of tango.

MALA JUNTACOMPOSER: JuLIO DE CARO / PEDRO LAuRENzDANCERS: MANuELA & JuAN

In this piece the couple performs a dance connected from the embrace to the versatility in all movements. It is characterized by the pure tango embrace and by the tight couple embrace.

Bearing in mind the essential tango, “cortes” and “quebradas”, and, above all, exhibiting a unique dance in which the man leads and the woman follows, in this case, she will do so in a subtle, delicate way so that each danced sequence becomes harmonized.

DERECHO VIEJOCOMPOSER: EDuARDO AROLASDANCERS: MARIELA & PABLO

The time has come for the childhood friends to dance. Since they are partners in dance as well as in life, they cling to their passion for dancing. They will offer energy and attitude throughout so fast and precise a dance. This is what we truly call “Tango”.

MI BUENOS AIRES QUERIDOMALE SINGER/HOMAGE TO CARLOS GARDEL

COMPOSER: CARLOS GARDELLYRICS: ALFREDO LE PERASINGER: CRISTIAN CHINELLATO (imPerSonaTion of CarloS Gardel)

In this piece the singer expresses his feelings for his home town. He is far away from it and therefore misses it so much. It is one of the most famous pieces of tango the great Carlos Gardel has ever sung.

CANAROEN PARISCOMPOSER: LuCIO DEMARELYRICS: HOMERO MANzI

It is the last dance of the “first act”, in which all the couples will display their dancing skills. This popular tango will allow the young couples and the young talented musicians to shine onstage.

The history of tango will have many stories to be told in the evening atthe party.

08

part ii

LA CUMPARSITACOMPOSER: GERARDO MATOS RODRIGuEzDANCERS: GROuP DANCE - FINAL / WHOLE COMPANY

This opens the second act of the show. under the most legendary tango’s chords, “La Cumparsita”, the Company will rock the audience. Since it is the most famous tango piece ever, it cannot go unnoticed in the show. Being aware of the fact that the audience has been waiting for this tangoall night long, the company will perform with the elegance and talent all members are endowed with.

LA MARIPOSACOMPOSER: PEDRO MAFFIAINSTRuMENTAL

It is a turning point in the development of tango creation.

It is widely considered as one of the best tangos ever, not only because of its aesthetic appeal but because it opened new composition perspectives.

The best-known performance is master Osvaldo Pugliese’s. He is one of the greatest artists tango has given us. “La Mariposa” is the instrumental tango with the greatest stylistic and renewing significance that has ever been composed.

In Tango legends, it appears to provide the second act of the show with a harmonious nuance. This tango must always be part of the musicians’ repertoire. Although the orchestra has made its own arrangement for Tango legends, the musicians have preserved its essence.

PASIONAL MALE SINGER

COMPOSER: JORGE CALDARALYRICS: MARIO SOTTOSINGER: CRISTIAN CHINELLATO

This tango tells about the madness of love. It explains in many different ways all the feelings related to love—passion, fancy, fear… Its lyrics make up one of the most famous pieces chosen to be sung by show singers.

PA Q TE OIGAN BANDONEONCOMPOSER: ERNESTO ROSSIDANCERS: SABRINA & JOSE

Dancers will show that in tango dance everything is linked—eyes, arms, hands, every body movement to the rhythm of tango, the viewpoint and feeling of what they are living, that is, a three-minute romance between two people.

ARRABALEROCOMPOSER: OSVALDO FRESEDODANCERS: VICTORIA & AGuSTIN

This is a fresh version by these dancers who draw with their legs this fun and playful tango... The couple will have the possibility of fascinating the audience with their stage handling. As soon as the first chord is heard, they will start floating on stage.

YO SOY MARIAFEMALE SINGER

COMPOSER: ASTOR PIAzzOLLALYRICS: HORACIO FERRERSINGER: YAMILA FIGuERAS

This is one of the earliest and most important pieces Piazzolla and Ferrer have written together.

The opera “María de Buenos Aires” has been incorporated to the world since 1968. It is now the most sung tango and it is widely performed abroad. Many international critics regard it as “the best work of Latin origin”.

Tango legends highlights the female figure with great symbolism, whose spirit gives birth to the female personality in tango. This piece reflects dozens of myths around tango, Buenos Aires and some surrealist characters.

PATA ANCHA Piece that they became theWorld Tango Champions with

COMPOSER: MARIO DEMARCODANCERS: MANuELA & JuAN

The dancers carry sad, joyful, sensual, euphoric rhythms to their body and their feet. They express the feelings that embellish the dance, adding to the mysticism of the embrace.

ZUM COMPOSER: ASTOR PIAzzOLLADANCERS: MARIA SOL & LuCAS

A passionate performance of this piece which was born in 1965.

A free interpretation and a free performance of Tango Dance Show. The couple, bearer of a quick dancing style, will show a new aspect by taking advantage of the sharp, rapid musical touch of the orchestra, with their own unique sequences of legs and bodies.

Melancholy, seduction and passion come onto the stage. These excellent dancers will make a magical evening out of each chord they accompany. Embraced with tango, they will employ all the choreographic elements characterizing modern tango in order to generate a revolutionary sensual dance—a unique dance that is always tango.

EL DIA QUE ME QUIERAS COMPOSER: CARLOS GARDELLYRICS: ALFREDO LE PERASINGER: YAMILA FIGuERAS, CRISTIAN CHINELLATO

It is a famous song created by Carlos Gardel’s music and Alfredo Le Pera’s lyrics in New York. It was part of the film with the same name “El Día Que Me Quieras/el día que me amas”.

During the performance the singers generate and share an atmosphere of love and tenderness. They play with the words and their magnificent voices to catch the audience.

INVIERNO PORTEÑO COMPOSER: ASTOR PIAzzOLLAINSTRuMENTAL

In this work Piazzolla’s tango attempts to convey the Buenos Aires citizen’s heartbeat. There emerges the bohemian part of the city, the new tango. The musicians make a free interpretation and a free performance. They play and reach a strong sound power and a unique style which grant them aesthetical identity and style recognition.

GALLO CIEGO COMPOSER: AGuSTIN BARDIDANCERS: ROCIO & JuAN PABLO

The time has come for us to see the most passionate stages of the Argentine Tango. The dancers will take the audience on a tour of love, passion and seduction. From the beginning, with their slow movements, they will show feelings which tango engenders when the dancers are so close to each other, two bodies and two hearts beating strongly together. We shall find that the woman’s extreme sensuality successfully takes effect since the man will surrender at the young sensual woman’s feet.

LIBERTANGOCOMPOSER: ASTOR PIAzzOLLADANCERS: MARIELA & PABLO

It is the last couple solo dance... From the beginning to the end of the choreography, these dancers will take your breath away...

This is the most modern dance. The passion and seduction of tango are not lost here because it is in their loose movements where it will be clearly appreciated that these dancers carry the tango in their soul and in their blood...It is possible to enjoy in the young man’s hands the speed and skill with which he takes and holds her partner in the air. Thus, with amazing lifts and jumps, they will surprise the audience.

The woman, who is sensual and attractive, will go on seducing till the end. Furthermore, her connection will rely on the man’s lead and the music. This couple will hold the audience spellbound with jumps and tricks. The audience will enter the abyss of excitement and passion for two-four time of tango.

ADIOS NONINOCOMPOSER: ASTOR PIAzzOLLAINSTRuMENTAL

adiós nonino is a musical piece of tango by the Argentine musician and composer Astor Piazzolla. It is widely considered to be his most significant and emblematic work. It is said that Astor composed this famous tango one night while he was suffering from depression due to his father’s sudden death. “Nonino” was Astor’s father’s nickname.

Piazzolla would say: “This is my number one tango, the best I’ve ever composed. I’ve tried many times to surpass it, but I’ve failed.” That is the main reason why it is referred to as the summit of his musical creativity. The most striking thing about the history surrounding the creation of such a masterpiece is that it took the master only forty five minutes to express his feelings on this unforgettable music.

In Tango legends, “Adios Nonino”, closes the instrumental part of the orchestra. The musicians’ arrangement and unique live performance will excite and move the audience.

TANGUANGOCOMPOSER: ASTOR PIAzzOLLADANCERS: WHOLE COMPANY

It is a pure masterpiece by master Piazzolla. He used to say the following about this creation, “My tango does belong to this day. Tango is sad, it is dramatic, but it is not pessimistic. Lyrics in the past were pessimistic, totally absurd….” that is what he answered when asked about this work at an interview in 1989.

In Tango legends, it is a danced piece. The whole company is on stage with their dance trying to prevail over the magical music played live. Piazzolla is our favourite composer when it comes to creating the choreographies and generating onstage atmosphere, because he allows for freedom of moves where we may fuse classical dance and contemporary dance, while we preserve, in turn, tango as a whole, unique, personal, passionate, natural, essential partner dance which nowadays captivates the entire world.
