CITY SERVE PRAYER BOOK 1

Our mission is to glorify God and advance His Kingdom by engaging the members and other resources of Second Presbyterian Church, directly and through partnerships with others, in effective and sustainable ministries that proclaim the Gospel, extend mercy, and promote justice in our city.

As a church, we have the great privilege of partnering with and supporting ministries deeply engaged in the work God is doing in our city. These partnerships include support for:

• Para-church ministries, most of which are focused on the needs of children and families in under-resourced neighborhoods

• Church planting initiatives in under-resourced neighborhoods• Special projects

2 CITY SERVE PRAYER BOOK

PRAYER IS URGENT. Paul’s New Testament letters to churches have been described as “modern day missionary support letters.” In them, Paul shared with his supporters his personal needs and petitioned and expressed thanks for financial support. But beyond that, he pled for believers’ prayers with a deep sense of urgency: For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia . . . . He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and He will deliver us. . . . you also must help us by prayer. (2 Corinthians 1: 8-10.)

PRAYER IS CENTRAL IN GOD’S MISSION. Its significance is no doubt deeply undervalued and underestimated by most of us. Sandy Willson has said that nothing in the Christian mission is more important than prayer: “Just as our sovereign God chooses to use our personal efforts to accomplish His purposes, in ways difficult to comprehend, He also chooses to use the prayers of His people to accomplish His purposes.”

PRAYER IS COMMANDED. We are taught how to pray and we are assisted in our prayers.

Luke 18:1 And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart.

Matthew 6:9-13 Jesus teaches how we are to pray.

The Holy Spirit continually intercedes before the Father on our behalf.

Romans 8:26 For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

So God commands prayer, teaches prayer, empowers prayer – but beyond that, He inexplicably uses prayer.

Immediately following are some general suggestions about praying for our city, followed by some instructions about how to use this book. Finally, there are specific requests of our ministry partners.

GENERAL PRAYER SUGGESTIONS

Praying for our City

Praise God and give thanks to Him for the ways He has blessed us as a city.

Psalm 118:1 Oh give thanks to the Lord for He is good.

• Give thanks for the blessing of a long history of many Bible believing churches and gifted pastors and church leaders who have contributed to the well being of our city.

• Give thanks for the current vast array of evangelical ministry efforts responding to needs in our city and engaged in advancing God’s Kingdom.

Pray for a spiritual revival in our city that will cause it to prosper and flourish.

Jeremiah 29: 7-8 Seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.

4 CITY SERVE PRAYER BOOK

Pray for the materially poor and under-resourced in our city.

Psalm 103:6: The Lord works righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed.

Proverbs 14:31 He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for his Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.

Pray for persisting challenges confronting our city: for improvement in educational opportunities; for an end to violence and crime in our city; for quality healthcare for all of our neighbors; for restoration of distressed neighborhoods; and for needs of refugees and immigrants adjusting to life in our city.

Praying for 2PC Ministry Partners

We encourage you to pursue opportunities to learn about ministry partners and our city in order to pray knowledgeably and specifically for them.

Pray that doors will be opened to the proclamation of the Gospel.

Colossians 4:1-2 …pray for us that God may open to us a door for the word to declare the mystery of Christ

Pray that the Holy Spirit will empower and equip ministry leaders for the roles to which they have been called.

Hebrew 13:20-21 Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep… equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever.

Pray for encouragement for our ministry leaders.

1 Corinthians 15: 58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

CITY SERVE PRAYER BOOK 5

Pray for our personal engagement with needs in our city.

Pray that each of us, in view of our own life experiences and giftedness, as well as our present commitments and life circumstances, will consider how we can be involved and supportive of the work God is doing in our city.

Isaiah 58: 6-7 Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice … to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter… when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood.

Pray that all of us will have hearts that care deeply for the poor and marginalized in our city.

We cannot muster up the willpower to obey (at least for very long), nor can we command our hearts to feel affection for the unlovely or to want to sacrifice our money, time, convenience, or emotional energy on behalf of struggling people. We must look outside ourselves, to God. It is only God’s supernatural work in our hearts that makes it possible for us to do what He requires of us… Plead with Him to put into your heart true charity and compassion.

HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

Read about one ministry partner each day for 60 days. We encourage you to think creatively as to how to use the book – perhaps in your individual time of devotion or in a time of praying together as a family.

Send an encouraging email or note, make a phone call, or otherwise connect with a ministry leader as you sense God’s direction. The information needed to communicate with each partner is provided for you in this booklet.

Our Challenge:

We challenge you in your time of daily prayer to walk through the neighborhoods in our city in your mind. Remember those in need you have known, seen, or have yet to meet. Pray that God will work supernaturally in your heart to give you the compassion He has for those in need. Memphis is a city ripe for transformation. We have a history that provides a great opportunity for the display of God’s glory. So let’s first go to our knees in humility and expectation, plead for God to bring healing and prosperity to our city, and be open to how He may lead us to be supportive of and involved in the work He is doing in our city. Let’s join together and experience the transformative power of prayer on behalf of Memphis.

Church Plants & Church Partners

Second Presbyterian Church has been in Memphis for 171 years, with a long history of evangelism through the planting of new churches throughout our city. It is, perhaps, our single most significant contribution to the life of our city.

The church lies at the very center of the eternal purposes of God. It is not a divine afterthought. It is not an accident of history. On the contrary, the church is God’s new community. For his purpose, conceived in a past eternity, being worked out in history, and to be perfected in a future eternity . . . is not just to save isolated individuals and so perpetuate our loneliness, but rather to build his church, that is to call out of the world a people for his own glory.

The Living Church – Convictions of a Lifelong Pastor – John Stott

DAY 1 All Saints Presbyterian Church

All Saints began as a plant of Second Presbyterian Church in 2001. The vision of the church, which has been pastored by Rev. Waring Porter since 2005, is to be a loving community where Jesus Christ is lifted up, where deep relationships are established within the wide ethnic and socio-economic diversity of Midtown Memphis, and where individuals are equipped to respond to needs in that neighborhood.

Pray • For the continued development of our Food Ministry as the main focus of our Mercy Ministry.

• For opportunities to share the Gospel in word and deed so that we may be the arms and feet of Christ to our neighborhood.

Pastor Manuel Glory began serving as the pastor in January 2015. The vision for the church is to develop a model of effectively serving Hispanic families in our city through a neighborhood church and related outreach ministries through loving and serving people and faithfully proclaiming the Gospel.

those who attend church.

DAY 3 Downtown Church

Rev. Richard Rieves began efforts to plant a Downtown church in the spring of 2008, with the first public worship service occurring in 2010. Downtown became a “particularized” church in November of 2013 with the installation of its own elders and the acceptance of the first group of members of the church. Its mission is to glorify God by creating a radical new community that molds loving disciples of Jesus through the power of the Gospel. The church reflects the economic, social, racial, and cultural diversity of Downtown Memphis.

Community Health

Memphis remains one of the poorest metro cities in the nation. Because access to quality medical services is inadequately distributed, many of our neighbors are in need of affordable healthcare.

Matthew 9: 35-36 And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the Gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

DAY 7 Bethany Christian Services

Bethany seeks to promote healthy families through providing adoption services (both domestic and international) and counseling services. A special program, the Safe Families initiative, provides temporary care for children of families experiencing a crisis, thereby preventing the children from being taken into the state’s custody.

Contact Director: Teri Seaton • Phone: (901) 312-5988 Address: 1255 Lynnfield, Suite 236, Memphis, TN 38119 Email: [email protected] Website: www.bethany.org/memphis

Pray • That God will continue to touch the hearts of expectant mothers to choose life instead of abortion, and to choose the path of adoption if they are unable to meet their child’s needs.

• That the staff can continue to provide quality services to our families and minister to our expectant mothers and fathers.

• That those who want to financially support us will continue to give and encourage others to give as well so that we can meet the needs of our clients.

• That God will send more families to Bethany with a heart for adoption, either domestic or international, so that every child can have a loving family and home.

Neighborhood Restoration

Decent, stable housing provides more than just a roof over our head. It contributes to a sense of personal dignity and pride; safer neighborhoods; increased economic development within neighborhoods; stability for families and children; improved educational performance; and healthier environments.

Isaiah 58:6-7 Is not this the fast that I choose . . . Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?

DAY 14 Service Over Self

Service over Self is a neighborhood restoration ministry that equips and disciples high school and college students. SOS campers rehabilitate homes and minister to families in the Orange Mound, Binghampton, and The Heights neighborhoods. Since 1998, SOS has repaired more than 900 homes in the inner-city of Memphis with more than 24,000 volunteers.

Cotact Director: Philip Walkley • Phone: (901) 681-9044 Address: 2505 Poplar Ave., Memphis 38112 Email: [email protected] • Website: www.sosmemphis.org

• That the neighborhoods of Orange Mound, Binghampton, and The Heights will be transformed through our home repair program.

• That God will work through us to do truly empowering work in the communities we serve so that leaders are developed and strengthened.

• That God will continue to provide faithful participants in all our programs, including homeowners, campers, summer staffers, interns, and full time staff.

Employment Related Ministries

Nothing attacks our dignity like not having a job. The suffering and consequences of unemployment and underemployment are pervasive and heart-wrenching. Joblessness contributes to poverty, crime, homelessness, domestic violence, substance abuse, unwanted pregnancies, depression, divorce, and suicide – it is self-perpetuating and tears at the fabric of society.

Psalm 90:17 Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!

DAY 15 Advance Memphis

The mission of Advance Memphis is to serve adults in the former Cleaborn and current Foote community of Memphis by empowering residents to acquire knowledge, resources, and skills to be economically self-sufficient through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Advance Memphis offers classes like Jobs for Life, computer literacy, financial literacy, and job training.

Education Related Ministries

Biblical justice and Kingdom values demand that all of our children—regardless of race, class, religion or where they live in our city —have fair and equal access to quality educational opportunities, which is a basic civil right in the United States. Today, educational injustice exists along economic and racial lines. This problem has reached epidemic proportions, with far too many children condemned to substandard educational opportunities based solely on their zip code. Justice mandates that all of our children have a free, high-quality public education.

Biblical justice demands that Christians pursue restoration and renewal — including, with special significance for our city, the education of our children. Christ demonstrated and proclaimed a Gospel that impacted the world holistically by “proclaim[ing] liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor” (Luke 4:18–19). Family and Children

Within 2PC, one of our highest priorities has been the nurturing and development of children and teenagers. As we seek to minister, serve, and direct resources beyond the walls of our church, a major focus has been on serving children and their families in under-served neighborhoods in our city. Of our 50 ministry partners in the city, more than half are principally youth focused ministries. In the city of Memphis, approximately 42,000 school age children (K-12th grade) live in poverty. Nearly half of these children are younger than 5 years old and at a stage of development that makes them most susceptible to the ravages of not having enough food, safe housing, positive learning experiences, and access to quality childcare.

Luke 18:16 Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them.

“Mercy ministry is working to alleviate the burdens of another person, it is meeting their real or perceived needs through Gospel driven deeds. Mercy Ministry is kingdom ministry. It incorporates all of the effects of the coming of the kingdom of God and thus is a visual, viable representation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”

Adapted from Tim Keller’s Ministries of Mercy

Luke 10: 33-35 But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, “Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.”
