Malaysia’s Universal Service Provision (USP)Malaysia’s Universal Service Provision (USP)Malaysia’s Universal Service Provision (USP)Malaysia’s Universal Service Provision (USP)
The Universal Service Provision (USP) initiatives are an ongoing
effort of the Government of Malaysia through the Malaysian
Communications and Multimedia Commission to promote
widespread availability and usage of communication and
multimedia services to underserved groups such as the disabled,
women under rehabilitation, low cost residential areas and
children under protection in underserved areas.
The basic tenets of the USP initiatives is to bridge the digital
divide and provide access to communication services. The Pusat
Internet 1Malaysia or 1Malaysia Internet Centre (PI1M) is one of
the early projects under the USP initiative. The first PI1M was
built in 2007 with it’s primary objective to bridge the digital
divide by providing collective and individual access to
communication in underserved areas, as well as encouraging the
use of ICT towards building a knowledge society. As of July
2016, there are 709 numbers of PI1M in operation nationwide.
Each PI1M is equipped with desktop computers and peripherals
along with broadband internet access with a minimum speed up
to 4 mbps and is available for the use of the public at a minimal
fee. Wifi access is available for free for all visitors. Students, the
elderly and persons with disability are given free internet access
using the desktop computers at PI1M. Besides internet services,
these centres takes an active role in conducting training
programmes and ICT-related events to promote interest in ICT.
Entrepreneurship and ICT-related training are being conducted
for free by full-time supervisors in these centres.

The Carey IslandThe Carey IslandThe Carey IslandThe Carey Island
The Carey Island (Malay: Pulau Carey) is an island located south
of Port Klang in Selangor. It is a huge island separated from the
Selangor coast by the Langat River. It is an initial settlement
area of the Mah-Meri, one of the aborigine tribes of Malaysia.
They have assimilated into modern life, with jobs in the nearby
plantations and farms, but they retain their unique culture and
way of life. Apart from exhibitions of their traditional dances and
music, the Mah Meri are particularly known for their unique
sculptures, fashioned from a hardwood known as “Nyireh Batu”.
