WARNING ON POLLUTION ISSUED BY DR LEAKEY

Mankinds past can be traced back for 20 million years but his future may not extend beyond the next 30 to 40 years according to Louis s B Leakey

The world-famous anthropologist told a campus audience last week that his fossil disshycoveries in Africa establish the existence of man as early as 26 million years ago but that Adams Ancestors lived side-by-side with the ancestors of the gorilla as far back as 20 million years ago

Dr Leakey told the audience of nearly 5000 that science must dig deeper to find a common ancestor for man and other primates And he urged a change of direction if man is to survive in the future

His lecture as part of the Cal Poly College Convocation Series was illustrated with slides of his lifelong studies of fossil evidence of man and his primate cousins

Dr Leakey cited pollution as the major threat to mans future evolution We must not adapt to pollution but fight pollution before it kills us he declared

Today I believe that man is the most endangered species in the whole world endangered by his pollution endangered by his lack of forethought endangered by his misuse of his resources endangered by overpopulation and above all by allowing the invention of such things as germ warfare and hydrogen and atom bombs Its got to be stopped

When the audience applauded this declaration Dr Leakey said You wont stop it by ap plauding me You must build public opinion

He asked his audience to promise faithfully to work to influence others to influence world governments to apply resources to solving mankinds problems of poverty overshypopulation disease and use of resources

The capacity crowd in the Mens Gymnasium frequently applauded Dr Leakeys pleas for humanity and gave the 69-year-old scientist a standing ovation following his lecture and a question-and-answer period
