The world’s first non-surgical and removable hearing
solution that imperceptibly transmits sound via the teeth.
Deafness in one ear?Rejoin the conversation.
Your hearing is precious. Without it, it can be difficult to fully connect with the world around you.
If you are one of the millions of people
who are essentially deaf in one ear, a
condition sometimes called single sided
deafness, you no longer need to suffer in
silence. Maybe you thought there was not
a good treatment option for you. Or maybe
you are considering a surgical implant. If
you have grown tired of missing out on
conversations in noisy rooms, having to find
the right seat at a meeting, or being unable
to tell where a car is coming from as you
walk across a street or parking lot,
SoundBite may be ideal for you.
What is SoundBite?
The SoundBite™ Hearing System is the world’s
first removable and non-surgical hearing solution
to use the well-established principle of bone
conduction to imperceptibly transmit sound via
the teeth. It is intended to help patients who
suffer from single sided deafness rejoin the
conversation of life.
SoundBite benefits include:
• No surgery required. SoundBite is simple,
removable, and totally non-invasive.
Furthermore, you’ll need no dental work or
alterations to your teeth.
• Virtually invisible. No one will be able to tell
you are wearing it.
• Clinically proven to improve your ability to
hear and understand speech, even in noisy
environments.
• Comfortable, as each easy-to-wear SoundBite
device is custom made just for you. You
will barely know you’re wearing it. You can
continue to eat, drink, and bite down normally.
SoundBite Hearing System in Detail
Nearly invisible when worn, the SoundBite™
system consists of two components: an easy to
insert and remove ITM (in-the-mouth) hearing
device—which is custom made to fit around the
upper, left or right, back teeth—and a small
behind-the-ear (BTE) microphone unit worn on
the impaired ear. No dental work or modifica-
tions to the teeth are required. This system
currently is cleared by the FDA to treat single
sided deafness with intended future indications
including the treatment of conductive and mixed
hearing loss.
Your own outer ear has natural acoustic benefits
as it effectively collects and channels sound
from the environment into the ear canal. To take
advantage of this, a tiny microphone is placed
within the canal of the impaired ear and is
connected by a nearly invisible tube to the BTE.
The BTE uses a digital signal processor to process
the sound and a wireless chip to transmit the
sound signals to the ITM. Once the ITM picks
up the signals, it in turn converts them into
imperceptible sound vibrations that travel via
the teeth, through bone, and to your cochlea.
In this way, sound is rerouted from your impaired
ear directly to your good cochlea—bypassing
the middle and outer ear entirely—to effectively
restore the perception of hearing from your
impaired ear. Both components have recharge-
able batteries and a charger is also provided.

How does SoundBite work?
Sound vibrations, like waves that ripple across
water’s surface, travel through a medium. We hear
the world around us when sound waves travel
through the medium of either air, or our bones,
to arrive at our inner ears. SoundBite Hearing
System works by making innovative use of this
well-established, natural principle that hearing
professionals call bone conduction—the transmis-
sion of imperceptible sound vibrations through
your bones to your inner ears—to deliver clear,
natural, high quality sound. You hear many sounds
through bone conduction already, for example
when you chatter your teeth, crunch on potato
chips, or scratch your scalp.
What are its advantages?
Bone conduction has been used for many years,
in thousands of patients, often through surgically
implanted bone anchored hearing devices, to treat
patients with single sided deafness. However,
the SoundBite system is different from invasive
permanent implants in important ways.
Patients are choosing SoundBite because:
• SoundBite requires no invasive surgery, drilling
into the skull, or the risk of potential surgical
complications.
• Treatment with SoundBite is simple and easy.
There is no downtime and waiting to heal
before your device can be worn.
• It is completely removable. And there is no
permanent post implanted in your head.
• It is aesthetically discreet and easy to wear for
active lifestyles. There is no visible box worn
on the outside of your head.
These are important advantages that SoundBite
patients have enjoyed. In fact, in a clinical trial,
95% of SoundBite patients would recommend it to a friend who also had single sided deafness.
Will it work for me?
If you are unable to hear in one ear, then you may
be a candidate for SoundBite treatment. Talk to
your audiologist or physician, typically an ENT or
Otologist, to learn whether SoundBite treatment
could be right for you.
How do I get SoundBite?
Once prescribed by your treating physician,
typically an ENT or Otologist, a simple partial
impression of your teeth will be taken. From this
impression, a custom-made SoundBite system will
be made just for you. You snap it on, it is pro-
grammed by your audiologist, and then you are
on your way to a new world of sound.
What does it cost?
If your insurance plan has a prosthetic benefit,
SoundBite may be covered. Talk to your doctor to
find out more.
